Distinguished Citizen of the Year
Chancellor Kent Syverud
12th Chancellor and President of Syracuse University
Kent Syverud is the 12th Chancellor and President of Syracuse University. During his eleven years as Chancellor, he has stewarded the University during a period of transformational change and growth with record applications and enrollment. Under Chancellor Syverud's leadership, Syracuse University has become one of the best private universities for veterans, tripling enrollment of veterans and military-connected families. Embracing innovation, Chancellor Syverud oversaw Syracuse's launch of one of the first online J.D. degree programs in the nation. A noted legal scholar who served as Law Dean at both Vanderbilt University and Washington University, Chancellor Syverud continues to teach at Syracuse University's College of Law and Whitman School of Management. Chancellor Syverud led the restructuring of governance of the Atlantic Coast Conference, serving as Chair of the Board of Directors (2019-2021). He serves on the Boards of Crouse Health System, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Le Moyne College, and the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. He previously served as Commissioner for the Middle States Commission on Higher Education and co-Chair of the Regional Economic Development Council for Central New York. In 2016, he completed six years as the Independent Trustee of the $20 billion Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Trust.
A native of Irondequoit, New York, he was an Eagle Scout and served on the board of the Longhouse Council. He and his wife, Dr. Ruth Chen, an environmental toxicologist and professor, are the parents of three grown sons, Steven, Brian, and David, all involved in scouting; and they have five grandchildren.

President Joanie Mahoney
President of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF)
Joanie Mahoney is the President of SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry (ESF), a position she has held since November 2020, becoming the first woman to lead the institution. Prior to her role at ESF, Joanie served as Onondaga County Executive for 11 years, where she earned national recognition for her environmentally conscious leadership and management of a government serving 460,000 residents.
She also has a background in law, having worked in private practice with Harris Beach law firm and as a criminal prosecutor in the Onondaga County District Attorney's Office.
Joanie currently chairs the New York State Thruway Authority and has been widely recognized for her commitment to public service and environmental stewardship. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University's School of Management and a Juris Doctor from Syracuse University's College of Law
In 2023, Joanie was nominated as the Distinguished Citizen of the Year by the Longhouse Council, Boy Scouts of America, and was recognized at the 55th Annual ScoutPower event.
Joanie currently resides in Dewitt, NY, with her husband, Marc Overdyk, and she has four adult sons.
