Save the Date for the 5th Annual Houston Reads Day: February 28, 2025
Houston, we just don't have a problem. We have a crisis - a literacy crisis.
The Need:
- 73% of 3rd graders in the Houston area do not read at grade level.
- 41% of young children in the Houston area are not ready for kindergarten.
- Students NOT reading on grade level by the 3rd grade are 4 times more likely not to graduate high school.
The Solution:
- Since 2006, Literacy Now's programs have made a significant impact on the community, impacting the lives of more than 26,000 children and parents.
- Literacy Now provides reading intervention, reading readiness, and trained volunteer mentors to students along with interactive parent engagement programming that is instrumental to children's long-term success.
- These programs empower students to read on grade level.
The Opportunity:
- Right now, we are ONLY serving 23% of the children who desperately need our Reading Intervention program.
- Houston Reads Day is the catalyst to sustain and grow our Reading Intervention program.
Impact - Over the past four years, Houston Reads Day has:
- Raised $2.9M to sustain and grow our Reading Intervention program.
- More than 1,700 volunteers read to more than 35,000 Pre-K-3rd grade students.
