DonateMaintaining a safe space for local high schoolers
Students in our communities experience numerous behavioral health struggles-such as bullying, relationship issues with parents/friends, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, peer pressure and social media pressures-and long wait times for traditional outpatient counseling services, combined with transportation difficulties, often prevent youth from receiving the mental health care that they need.
Corewell Health school telemedicine clinics are positioned inside local high schools to give students an opportunity to be seen privately by a licensed master social worker (LMSW) via videoconference for therapy and counseling services without leaving the school.
By continuing to support these services within the school setting, this program addresses gaps in youth-specific behavioral health supports and the associated negative impacts on student academic performance.
The impact
Throughout 2023, over 1,000 students have taken advantage of these services at Big Rapids High School, Reed City High School and Evart High School. The top 5 diagnoses students are being treated for include:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Suicidal ideation
- Adjustment disorders
- General trauma
This model of psychotherapy has proven to help students with improved attendance, decreased isolation and proven prevention of suicide.
