THE US DOLLAR REIMAGINED
Live ItemThe US Dollar Reimagined as a Blue and White Dragon
Born in 1987 in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, and now living in Beijing, Su Yu has spent his life as a professional painter training under masters of the art, culminating in his unique mixture of collage and scenic mastery. While engrossed in his studies of the old masters, his specific way of portraying the group scene and still life has led to this distinctly gritty yet sometimes playful approach to the characters in his paintings with aspects of modern life and a caricature/portraiture mixture leading to his wide catalog of work.
"I paint currency and the relationship between currency and famous paintings, regardless of what the actual connection between money and artworks is. I want to commemorate the existence of paper money through artwork. It is well known that some great art cannot be separated from the pursuit of human civilization, spiritual realm, religion, culture, philosophy, rich emotions, all of which are indispensable, and currency is a symbol of human civilization. So many of the works I paint are about the relationship between the currency and artworks.
'The US Dollar Reimagined as a Blue and White Dragon' combines the most traditional artistic symbols of China with the symbols of the U.S. dollar. We know how important the dollar is globally. It carries the global economic context, like the dragon's veins. It also constitutes an important cultural symbol in modern human history. I also want to express through this way that everything in the world seems to have a price, just like the blue and white dragon. Our education, culture, and health all have price tags attached. Such prices have long exceeded their utility value. We cannot return to the most primitive relationship between humans and objects. Two butterflies set off the noble blue and white porcelain, making the blue and white no longer glamorously cold and lonely!"
