HudsonWay Debate Club
+ Debate Team with the Middle School Public Debate Program (MSPDP)
Coach: David Silverman (Parent, Mandarin Grades 4 & 1)
Discussing, understanding, and presenting issues from multiple perspectives is a critical skill in today's world. HudsonWay's debate team will teach these skills and encourage them to have fun while building confidence and learning to compete with their minds.
The purpose of Debate Club is to introduce to the fundamental skills of debate, including speaking, argumentation, topic research, and the rules of the MSPDP style. While we may or may not engage in tournament competition this semester (Spring 2024), the club is intended to build these skills in advance of league participation in the 2024-2025 school year.
We are starting an MSPDP Debate Team to complete in the New York Debate League; both are well-established debate organizations that include peer schools like Dalton, Fieldstone, and Speyer. Learn more here.
The club will be open to students in the fourth grade and above. While most of the participants in MSPDP will be in 6th-8th grade, younger students can begin to master the relevant skills and join in competitions if they demonstrate the ability to participate effectively. Regardless of grade or ability level, students will participate in practice debates at HWIS conducted under the rules of MSPDP.
We're excited to help HWIS students have fun finding their voice.
