Notes from the winemaker:

I'm really excited about this version of Broken Stones. It seems fairly typical. It is Syrah dominated, and was mainly raised in small 225L barriques, about 75% of which were new. However, this is the first year our new Syrah planting up in the Santa Lucia Mountains made its way into the blend. (What we are now calling Old Creek Vineyard, formerly referred to as Cayucos Ridge.). The new Syrah only makes up around 11%, but it definitely brings a bit of black pepper spice to the game. The rest is the usual sources, with James Berry Vineyard making up
the bulk, a sprinkling of G2, Heart Stone, and a splash of Dusi.

It's a show stopper. Rich in texture, aromas of black fruits and spices, and our characteristic brightness that is always there thanks to our limestone soils. Oh yeah, and the finish goes on and on and on and on……. This wine is a pleaser.

Notes from the winemaker:

When we tasted the wines side by side to write these notes (I know, hard life!), Heather and I were struck by how elevated this wine was. Yes, it's the only Grenache led wine in this Syrah dominated release, but it was just singing! These '21s have really snuck up on me. I have to admit that early in their

Attractively aromatic and complex with ripe black and red cherry, black currant, new book leather, cedar, tobacco, vanilla bean, licorice, and oak.

Palate
Full-bodied on the palate with ripe complex cherry, cassis, and a subtle red berry fruit on entry, with vanilla and licorice baking spice leading into the midpalate, which shows complex savory notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, and leather. The very long, complex, and continually changing finish is a progression of sustained ripe cherry fruit accented by baking spice and oak notes, with smooth chewy tannins and balanced acidity, adding depth and freshness.

The 1946 Don PX Convento Seleccion produced with Pedro Ximenez grapes dehydrated under the sun at the time of the Second World War, was only bottled in September 2011.

Incredibly complex and rich, sweet, balanced and smooth in the palate, it is both very sweet and somehow salty, and with time it develops a black olive note.

Bottle 2020 Delmas Walla Walla Valley Syrah

Picked before the smoke in 2020, the wine is a blend of Syrah and Viognier (8.2%) that was stored in 50% new French oak before bottling in February 2022. The nose is hedonistic and highly complex with hoisin sauce, blackberry pie, smoked brisket, green olive tapenade, Nori and suggestions of white pepper dusted bacon. The heady aromas bring you back to the glass for more enjoyment.

Bottle 2020 Stony Hill Chardonnay

A stunning vintage with fruit sourced exclusively from our 1988 plantings of Wente Chardonnay on a treelined bench just above the Residence. The 2020 hints green and golden apple notes, which are accented by lemon zest, pine tips, and pomelo pith with a touch of Medjool dates. Fresh and understated, this is a classic Stony Hill Chardonnay-crystalline, balanced, both generous and incisive with a hint of salinity.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon has heady aromatics that affirm this is a serious wine for serious wine lovers. This wine displays black cherry, Zante currant, plum and blackberry up front, complemented by dark chocolate, tobacco leaf and cool menthol. Rounding out the nose are aromas of black olives, briarwood, fig, and dried thyme. Bold and assertive on the palate with flavors initially dominated by dark fruits, Bing cherries, black raspberry, plum, and pomegranate, accompanied by high note accents of cranberries and rhubarb. Midpalate delivers espresso and dried herbs with hints of fennel and cigar box all seamlessly integrated together on a structure of very fine grain, plush and ripe tannins. Bottle 2019 Domaine Saint Préfet Chateauneuf Du Pape

Melted licorice, plum sauce, cherry purée and black tea notes all meld into a silky, suave and seamlessly-textured wine that leaves a subtle echo of lavender at the very end. Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Mourvèdre from Rhone, France.

Bottle 2020 Domaine Rollin Pere et Fils Pernand-Vergelesses

This wine, coming from the ideally positioned Les Cloux lieu- dit, possesses a lower-pitched, deeper nose than the basic Per- nand-Vergelesses above, but with an equivalent limestone in- tensity more solid in its character than powdered. The palate is richer and thicker as well, but suffused with the alert acidity typical of the Rollin style.

Poppies in the Meadow

Each child contributed to creating this beautiful art piece. Poppies were created using balloons that had marbles twisted into them to bring about the radial lines in the flower petals. Students dipped the twisted ends in their chosen colors. The young artists applied vertical strokes with differently sized paintbrushes and foam brushes to create the sky and the meadow.

Day Dreams and Night Wishes

Each child envisioned a list of five personal dreams and wishes, accompanied by selecting a glow-in-the-dark paint color they felt resonated with each aspiration. Vocalizing their dreams aloud, the children took turns splattering paint across the canvas using broad brushes, culminating in a captivating and collaborative Abstract Expressionist creation. Illuminated by its glow-in-the-dark feature, the artwork symbolizes the manifestation of dreams during the night, while the changing colors mirror the nature of each child's wishes.

Infinity Nets K24

Inspired by Yayoi Kusama's Infinity nets paintings. We divided the canvas in 24 squares and each artist worked in their personal one (signed at the back). The kids painted with brush and their choice of colors for the background. After that they stamped with the bottom of a nerf gun's bullet the circles, using just one color to unify the whole canvas, as a whole class working together with different personalities. They created a colorful version and have lots of fun during the process.

Crescent Dreams

The 24 young artists in Mrs. Lange's Kindergarten class have come together to create a work of art representing the phases of the moon. Each child has crafted their own moon using droppers of India ink and silver paint on watercolor paper. Just as the moon transitions through its phases, the children are constantly changing and growing, much like the waxing and waning of the lunar cycle. Each drop of ink and shimmering detail symbolizes a moment in time, a snapshot of their journey through childhood. The moons glow with an ethereal beauty, symbolizing the illumination and wonder these children bring to our world.

Color Harmony

The students of Mrs. Reynolds' class took the simple idea of a Venn diagram which highlights similarities and differences and applied it to color theory. Each student chose up to 5 colors out of a color palette of ten colors to create unique circles with color blending and texture using a brayer to roll out and mix paint. They rolled out acrylic onto mixed media paper and then selected which parts of the canvas they wanted for circular cut outs which were mounted on canvas with a color pallete striped in the background. To show even more texture, the piece was finished with mod podge to give it a matte look and an organic, textured feel.

A wooden framed, custom-painted stool. Fueled by action and emotion, this multi-functional piece is inspired by Jackson Pollock's gestural paintings. The chair is durable and lightweight and an ideal way to add a splash of color to any room. The piece has been sealed and is appropriate for both indoor and outdoor use. Discrete artists' signatures beneath the seat add a touch of authenticity.

HEARTmosa Republic

This endearing, stylized art piece is inspired by the California Republic state flag with a whimsical twist. The top and middle area is white with a wide red strip along the bottom. In place of the iconic star and grizzly bear, is a red heart in the upper left corner and a dolphin in the center holding a yellow surfboard above ripples of water. The dolphin represents the HVS mascot and the yellow surfboard celebrates the beach community.

Using the"Tache technique" which means to leave a mark in French, the teacher and students embellished the art piece with one white and one red fingerprint each. The white paint symbolizes innocence, and the red paint symbolizes love. The art is complete with all the individual signatures along the perimeter.

When Art Meets Fruit

Painted with love by Ms. Jones' 2nd grade class, this acacia wood planter box houses a delicious Chilean guava evergreen shrub and is perfect for any outdoor plant collection. The Chilean Guava is an absolutely delicious fruit that smells and tastes like cotton candy. It has a creamy, pear-like texture with a flavor that's easy to love. Some think it tastes like strawberries or vanilla cream, while others describe it as passion fruit or guava. Planter box has drainage hole at the bottom to allow excess water to easily escape.

Hermosa Surf Shack Library

This library box created by Mrs. Trevino's second-grade class for the Hearts of Hermosa auction is a charming and inviting structure designed to foster a love of reading in their community. Crafted with care and creativity, the box features colorful surfboards decorated by the students themselves, inspired by artists such as Vexx and Gawx from the students Doodle Magic Young At Art lesson showcasing their artistic talents. Its sturdy construction ensures durability, able to withstand the elements while serving its purpose year-round. Inside, the iconic Hermosa Beach emblem shines bright with the help of solar lights strung inside to give passerby's the opportunity to select their book of choice day or night. The "Hermosa Surf Shack Library" plaque is proudly on display inviting passersby to take a book or contribute to the collection, fostering a sense of community and the joy of sharing stories.

Ms Patel's Paintbrush

Each student in Ms. Patel's class is unique and she finds ways of teaching to each student in their own language so they understand. The students used paintbrushes and metallic paint to blend various colors onto watercolor paper creating flowers and bubbles in their own special blend of colors. This became the hill the bird stands on and other background on the canvas. Painted in metallic acrylic paints, the bird represents each student while each different color, flower, bubble and dot on the canvas represents all the subjects, learning and experiences that wash over them each day at school. Ms. Patel mixes different "paints" and "shapes" together to find the right combination of colorful ways to reach and educate each student. And for that…we are grateful for Ms. Patel and her paintbrush.

Twenty-Four Into One

Mr Sanchez's third grade class demonstrated that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts when they created a seascape from 24 lines of blue. In creating their collaborative painting, each student learned how to mix oil paints to achieve a specific color which they then painted onto an equal-sized area of the canvas.

Origam-HB is a nod to Hermosa Beach's beloved history, love of the sea, and outdoors. Students painted using acrylic paint to capture the natural golden and aqua colors of the sand and sea, then they folded and twisted origami paper to capture this final abstract image. Beginning with a traditional origami boat, then transforming it into a windmill that's reminiscent of Hermosa Beach's historical landmark, Vetter Windmill, Ms. Aranda's 4th grade class created an abstract landscape perfect for hanging on any wall.

Golden State

The children in Ms. Cederquist's poured their hearts in to this massive banner of our beautiful Golden State. As they have been learning about California all year, the class was well prepared to know what important landmarks, cities, and state symbols we should include on the banner. The children showed incredible artistic prowess, painting the symbols and typography, making decisions about colors and design along the way. To complete the painting and add extra interest to their massive work of art, each child was able to practice their sewing techniques as they outlined the state and various symbols with delicate stitches of embroidery thread.

The children's initials are all embroidered on the side... with Ms. C to always remember the special year they shared.

The students of Ms. Sugden's 4th grade class draw inspiration from the art of Anthony Padnos, a junior at Mira Costa High School. Anthony was the mastermind behind an earlier Young at Art lesson, and the youngest to ever present a project to YAA. His 'Doodle Magic' was a project that our 4th grade class immediately connected with and not long after, Ms. Sugden made the connection that Anthony, was a 4th grade student of hers!

This class really thrives creatively when given the freedom to imagine. And this style of art, doodle magic, welcomes that.

Created by 29 of Ms. Sugdens 2024 class while inspired by 1 of her 2016 students, this considerable piece is sure to bring conversation and curiosity to any playroom or re-purposed space.

The kids of Mrs Smith's class were given the task of a making a clear, lucite longboard skateboard come to life! With acrylic pens they doodled their ideas all over to make this a super cool, colorful new ride for the wall! (2) acrylic hooks are included to hang this awesome piece of art in your home!

Dreamweavers

The students of Mrs. Hoagland's 5th grade class created abstract color and texture on canvas strips. Each student created both a warm color strip and a cool color strip to symbolize contrast. Each unique strip illustrates the beautiful diversity within the class, but woven together in harmony to highlight the collective strength that students harness by building a community in the classroom. Just like anything woven which gains strength through the weaving process, this piece is symbolic of the strength of these 5th graders who work together to be better and stronger in school and in the community. The unwoven ends demonstrate their future as unwritten, full of possibilities and dreams.

Sea Garden

Mrs. Hruskas class created this 3D abstract piece on canvas with acrylic paint, recycled egg cartons, and gold leaf. Each student cut and designed their own flowers to add to their sea garden representing Spring at the beach.

Hermosa Breeze

This gorgeous, versatile table was inspired by a Japanese jewelry company called The Nozomi Project where women took dishes and other objects broken in earthquakes and created pieces of jewelry. Taking tiles donated from Hermosa Beach residents, the students created an abstract wave, sun, purple sunset sky and the HB to show their love for all things Hermosa to create a one-of-a-kind indoor/outdoor end table. If, like the students of Mrs. Spann's class, you want to REALLY live the Hermosa beach life, you need only to place this table near an open window or on a patio, rest your glass of rose, and let that beautiful beach breeze remind you what the HB life is all about!

Students from Mrs. Vizzi's 5th grade class created a 3D mask with strips of coiled paper. Each quilled coiled piece uses anywhere from one to 16 strips of paper to create the differences in size.

The individual doodles are happy, sunny, and bright on their own, but when combined, they become radiant, compelling, and tell an entire story of a vibrant community that loves its kids. Photographer Bo Bridges' "Hearts of Hermosa" isn't just a photo; it's a celebration of connection, an homage to Hermosa, and showcases the unity and youthfulness of the local 7th grade class. This image captivates viewers, inviting them to be a part of something much larger than themselves-a community that beats as one. Set against the local backdrop of Hermosa Beach Pier, these students joined together to create an inspiring formation-a heart symbolizing love, togetherness, and shared memories.

This 36 x 36 acrylic painted canvas was inspired by the art of docent Armelle Ngo and she guided students through the use of using tape to make art inspired by the South Bay. Students mixed custom colors to reflect the colors they see down at Hermosa Beach every day. The gold finish is to highlight the golden hour, which is the memorable time as the sun is setting for families to be down at the beach, watching the sailboats.
