Nancy Clark's artworks are inspired by the determination and adaptation skills of her grandmother Josie Wright and father Russel Tharp. In traditional Blackfeet society, women were respected as spiritual leaders and had agency over their education and community roles. Women owned and managed homes, processed buffalo hides and meat, and more. In her art, Clark adapts the visual heritage of her family - a dress that Josie wore, her father's cradleboard that Josie built, animal skulls that provide protection - into iconic graphic elements that honor the self-determination and resilience of her grandmother, father and other American Indians.

Nancy Clark combines natural forms and patterns in detailed line work with bold colors. In her Climate Change Series, circles of decorated moccasins dance to the heartbeat of the earth and animals gather to protect the environment. Stars reflect the infinite starlight within and around us, and the interconnection of all things.

Clark has exhibited at the McColl Center for Visual Arts in Charlotte, SC, the State Capitol Museum in Olympia, the Northwest Arts and Crafts Center at Seattle Center, and the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle. Her large archival print Respect hangs at the Seattle University School of Law. Alongside her art career, Clark taught art and language arts in elementary and secondary schools. Daybreak Star Sacred Circle Gallery was proud to host a solo exhibition of Nancy Clark in Spring 2023.

Although Makah cultural practices vary from family to family, dance and song have always been an important way for native peoples to communicate, tell stories and pass down cultural information to the next generation. This was the way most of our ancestors received the stories of their elders before written language.

Like many indigenous cultures, the arts play an important role in daily life. Today many Makah make a living as artists. Carvers sell masks to galleries, shops and individual collectors throughout the world. Many northwest coastal carvings have a distinct style found nowhere else. They depict animals which were, and still are important to Makah culture. Whales, salmon, halibut, ravens, eagles and wolves are among the most commonly used images in these designs. Many Makah are skilled woodworkers and can make nearly anything they need from the trees, which grow in the surrounding forest.

West Coast Kwa'kwa'ka'wakw MFA artist Rande Cook explores and combines traditional and contemporary styles, and in doing so creates his own unique approach to Indigenous contemporary art. Incorporating science, culture, and his genuine passion for the well-being of old-growth and Mother Earth, Cook examines the current world we live in while preserving ancestral stories through new mediums and materials.

While growing up, Cook and his grandfather observed and discussed the traditional art forms of their Kwa'kwa'ka'wakw heritage. More specifically drawn to the ceremonial masks and the art of the potlatch. Cook holds chieftainships from his maternal side and his paternal side. From his father's side he is from the Gigalgam (The First Ones). Making the Thunderbird (Kwanusila) the crest of the 'Namgis (Nimpkish) tribe. From his mother's side, he is from the Seagull (Hamatam) of the Ma'amtagila (Matilpi Village) tribe.

Rande Cook continues to strive for diversity and originality, and his imaginative pieces push the envelope of contemporary and traditional Northwest Coast art already being pursued by museums and art collectors from around the globe. Cook has accumulated a unique combination of 25 years of heritage, knowledge and experience. Making the gentle rebel continually pushing boundaries to create beautiful and provocative works challenging audiences to reconsider the role of traditional techniques for contemporary artmaking. He continues to hold his chieftainship and has hosted potlatch ceremonies for his family, celebrating culture and carrying on strong teachings while dedicating time in preserving his cultural roots.
