Barbara Tyroler Photo Print
$430Enjoy this Unframed Photography Print Titled "The Williams Sisters, 36" from Local Photographer Barbara Tyroler's Greenbelt Pool Series Workshops 2004-2007!
This item is available for pickup at the gala on March 16th, at The ArtsCenter after March 18th, or it may be shipped to any US destination at an added cost to be determined.
Print size: 24"x35.5"
About the Print
"The Willims Sisters, 36 is an early water portrait created during my tenure on the University of Maryland art faculty. Together with my students, we observed the colorful water reflections as two young sisters were diving in and out of the pool at the Greenbelt Aquatics Center. This piece is created on an Iris Printer at Old Town Editions in Alexandria, Virginia, a professional digital print lab specializing in fine art reproductions. With a commitment to producing richly vibrant tonality with accurate color rendition, Old Town was the first in the DC metro area to provide top-quality archival performance, particularly difficult to achieve through traditional inkjet technology at the time.
While documenting children, elderly, and families in the water, I have served on the faculties of UNC, Duke, and the University of Maryland, where I use the backdrop of the swimming pool as an opportunity to express light, design, and pattern through observation of water and reflection. As an artist, I use water as a metaphor to describe issues pertaining to control and release, healing and harm, beauty, and fear. As a community worker, teacher, and colleague, I see water, and the swimming pool specifically, as the perfect teaching arena combining interactive and practical skills when people of all ages and development stages are learning to swim or enjoying the therapeutic healing aspects water has to offer."
About the Artist
Barbara Tyroler, M Ed, MFA is a professional photographer, artist, college-level educator, and community worker, specializing in creative portrait consignments, one-on-one photo tutorials, and small group workshops for the "deep-thinking" photographer. Founder of the ArtsCenter's original Photo Co-op in the 1980's, Barbara coordinated the Art School's first photo program, a series of darkroom classes and public exhibitions in the early days of Carr Mill Mall under Jacques Menache.

About the Mari Technique
Information is passed down to us genetically from the countless generations who came before us. For thousands of years, humans have made other than conscious connections to symbols and colors. Today we know that, just like the memories of our grandmothers, this knowledge of symbols and color is part of what we know. We know it on an unconscious level but do not know it consciously. MARI is accurate because this unconscious knowing informs our intuitive choices of symbol and color. MARI is a whole-brain instrument that includes both conscious and unconscious elements of our whole psyche.
The person taking the MARI assessment selects symbol and color pairs which are laid out on the Great Round, a series of twelve developmental stages. These stages are arranged in the exact same way humans process the environment. On a neurological level we conceive of forward motion through time in the same way that the sun traverses the sky. The developmental stages of the MARI, similarly, are arranged in the same way. The MARI, like our brains, is linked to the environment and cued to the natural cycles.
The MARI is so much more than a paper and pencil test that is typically machine scored. It is so much more than sitting and talking with a counselor, who has little to go on other than what you tell him or her.
Most importantly, the developmental stages of the MARI are all informed by a central stage that is rooted in meaning and purpose. The central stage represents wholeness. It is this positive, transpersonal perspective that anchors the whole MARI process in meaning. Wholeness is inherent in MARI and informs every aspect of a MARI session.
MARI is based on a multi-leveled perspective that includes right- brain and left- brain aspects and conscious and other-than conscious elements. It is the only instrument that includes all four functions of consciousness - thinking, feeling, sensing and intuiting. An assessment is only as good as what it is designed to measure. MARI is accurate because it is so comprehensive and it is positive because it is based in Transpersonal psychology. MARI also has the ability to be used as a therapeutic tool.

Jean Sylvestre Steel Wall Art
$105Enjoy this metal sculpture by Haitian artist Jean Sylvestre!
Measures approximately 19.25"x34.5" at its largest points.
This unique piece was hand constructed from a recycled steel oil drum.
This item is available for pickup at the gala on March 16th, or at The ArtsCenter after March 18th.
About the Process
"All the metal is sourced from 55-gallon steel oil drums, a readily available byproduct of shipping from the harbor in Port-au-Prince. Each drum is first burned to remove all paint and residue, then cut vertically down both sides and flattened into panels. Since the artists try to waste as little metal as possible, contemporary metal works tend to have standardized dimensions based on the size of these panels. The artist then uses various tools, including hammers and chisels, to cut away negative space until they have the basic design they want. Detail is added by hammering tiny indentations into the back of the metal to create raised patterns on the front." (Source: Haitihub)
