The SFSYO's success is rooted in its innovative, tuition-free training program which taps members of the San Francisco Symphony to coach Youth Orchestra members in individual instrument sectionals every Saturday. Nowhere else do young musicians receive this kind of regular, direct access to guidance from some of the finest orchestral musicians in the world.

The SFSYO's programming is on par with that of a professional orchestra. Its three subscription programs each season include repertoire that ranges from Mozart's Jupiter Symphony to Strauss's Suite from Der Rosenkavalier to Mahler's Symphony No. 1.

Le Jazz Hot

Le Jazz Hot (the Quartet/Trio of the Hot Club of San Francisco) is an ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli's pioneering Hot Club de France. The ensemble borrows the all-string instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club, but breathes new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group's superb lead guitarist Paul Mehling. Hearing the ensemble live, or on any of their eleven albums, carries the listener back to the 1930's and to the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris or the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of Le Jazz Hot has entranced audiences around the globe for over 30 years. Critics have hailed the group's playing as "intricate, scorching and often brilliant…" Acoustic Guitar. From festivals in Mexico and France to concert halls across North America, Le Jazz Hot keeps this historic music fresh and alive. www.LeJazzHot.biz

Angel Rosales, student testimonial

Angel Rosales has been a student at Community Music Center since the summer of 2020, part of a "class" of students nominated and admitted to CMC's Young Musicians Program during the pandemic, who began their classes online. He persevered through a full year of online lessons and classes before meeting his teachers and fellow students in person. Angel has studied under the direction of Charlie Gurke and Miguel Govea. His talent has been recognized by his teachers, who have invited him to play as a guest artist in some of their professional ensembles, and he has acted as a musical support to Mariachi CMC. He is currently a senior at Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School and plans to attend a four-year university to pursue business, and later attend law school.
