Our forty-year legacy of recognizing the far-reaching consequences of how we farm, craft the wine, and blend, along with the ethos to agonize over every fundamental detail, is what sets Chateau Montelena apart.

Vintage Weather: Budbreak did not arrive abnormally early despite the relatively warm winter and widespread concern over low rainfall. Mild weather, coupled with plenty of cool nights, extended the growing season. In general, harvest was steady with no major rain events. Conditions were ideal.

St. Francis Zinfandel, Montecillo Vineyard, 2019 - $40 Located in the Mayacamas Mountain range, the Montecillo Vineyard sits high on the western slope of the mountains overlooking Sonoma Valley. At 1400 feet elevation, the western exposure provides the heat and sunlight to ripen the Zinfandel vines and the well-drained soil contributes to smaller crops with highly concentrated, full-flavored fruit. The resulting wine is rich and lush. The "cinnamon dust" soil of this established Sonoma Valley vineyard delivers an elaborate bouquet of savory spices. Licorice and tamarind entwine with rich bittersweet chocolate and citrus zest, leading to a bright berry-like accent in the middle palate. A dry acidity combines with textural tannins to create a long velvety finish.

Turley Zinfandel, Buck Cobb Vineyard, 2021 - $38 Rated 94 points by Wine Advocate, "the 2021 Zinfandel Buck Cobb Vineyard is expressive and easy to drink this vintage. It has a medium ruby color and a delicate, perfumed style, with aromas of Morello cherry, apricot and mint and floral tones on the palate. Light-bodied, supple and juicy, this pretty Zinfandel will shine over the next 5-8 years." From Vinous: "The 2021 Zinfandel Buck Cobb Vineyard is a wonderfully complex, nuanced wine. Expressive floral and savory notes run through a core of red/purplish fruit. Turley Zinfandel, Steacy Ranch, 2021 - $34 Turley reports that the vines were planted in 1907 in the sandy loam soils on the east side of Lodi, interspersed with Grenache, Carignane, and Mission. Savory and earthy on the nose, with elements of dark fruits, sandalwood, red apple skin, and braised rhubarb, with smooth, super fine-grained tannins and a long, blue-fruited finish. Wine Spectrum says this wine was rated 92 points; "from vines planted in 1907, the medium ruby colored 2021 Zinfandel Steacy Ranch opens with some rubbery tones that give way to crunchy red fruit, mushroom, mint and earth aromas. The medium-bodied palate is soft and delicately styled with perfumed fruit, and it has a long finish with earthy accents."

The Warfield

If you believe that historic buildings have soul, then you have been surrounded by it at The Warfield theatre in San Francisco. This grand dame of a theatre opened May 13, 1922. It was built by showman and theatre chain owner Marcus Loew, who named the showplace after his old friend David Warfield, a native San Franciscan who began as an usher and grew to be one of the greatest silent film actors of his time. The Warfield was built as a vaudeville and movie palace. Originally called Loew's Warfield, it became the 300th theater in mogul Marcus Loew's growing theater chain. All of the big names in entertainment played on The Warfield's stage, including Al Jolson, Louis Armstrong, and Charlie Chaplin. Even then there were some "dog" shows with the likes of Rin Tin Tin. New Life came to the Warfield in 1979 when Bob Dylan played a two-week run of shows. The venerable hall has been rocking ever since. In keeping with its illustrious past, "everyone" has played The Warfield. The entertainment in the 1980s ranged from bands such as The Clash, Grateful Dead, and U2 to theatrical productions such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the Cantonese Opera from China. The Warfield, and all of its varied public events has been a beloved San Francisco institution for more than 80 years. The soul of the building ripens with each passing year.
