The Mayan Goddess Itzpapalotl was known as the butterfly goddess. She was known for her destructive as well as restorative powers. She chose to save only one creature ,the butterfly, when she plucked it from the fiery debris of her own destruction, wishing to preserve its beauty as it turned to stone.

I am reminded of my mother who loved butterflies and bright colors.

Though I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in private practice by occupation, I have discovered a wonderful way to express myself creatively through the medium of watercolor.Just as Life presents opportunities for growth, so does each painting, with its little surprises and challenges, all of which end up teaching me more about life. The most important lesson my paintings have taught me is to PERSEVERE. Just when I think the watercolor, having a life of its own, is not cooperating with my intentions, I am learning to 'keep-on-keeping-on' and to be open to new possibilities, which are often better than I ever could have anticipated. I am extremely fortunate to continue to learn new skills under the gifted teaching of Lorraine Danzo, a local watercolor artist and instructor.

I started the painting on Cinco de Mayo, and the fluttering colors of the Mexican dancer' skirts inspired me! It warmed my heart and brought a smile to my face.

This piece is truly inspired by my love of Colorado and the mountains. When I first moved out west from Michigan over 30 years ago, I was immediately enamored by the mountains. I recall my father telling a friend that I took one look at those mountains, fell in love and was never coming back. Seems he was right. This year, I named the piece, "Simply Colorado" as I wanted to do a simpler design than I have in the past. I am pleased with the end result highlighting the Colorado flag spread across the wings, the mountain scape under a sunset on the underwings and the state flower, a columbine, on the base. Colorado has a unique beauty which I hope I have captured, at least a little bit.

Denise is a hobby artist. She works with glass mosaics, generally for her own enjoyment and amusement, but also giving finished products away as gifts to friends and family. She has been privileged to be selected to create butterflies multiple years and is so pleased to again have the opportunity to contribute to the arts programs in schools through the Rotary Club Flight Project.

Inspiration for Monarch Fusion comes from two distant regions and cultures, Asia and Latin America. The bold orange and blue colors in Monarch Fusion are from Latin American arts culture. The design motifs are based on traditional Japanese designs.

Jeanie has taken art classes at Pikes Peak Community College. She has exhibited in several shows at the Downtown Studio and Cacao Chemistry. Jeanie has worked in public and school health as a registered nurse. Travel and community volunteer work are two of Jeanie's passions. My name is Georgia. I am a self taught mixed media artist. I started doing art as a young girl to cope with the strife of having a heart disease which limited what I could do physically. This petite butterfly represents a celebration,
with fireworks, pinwheels and confetti. It is a
whimsical piece that might remind you of the
circus, the fair or the carnival at the boardwalk.
The finished piece reminds me of a fireworks
show.

This piece is painted with acrylic paints,
including metallic and glitter paints. I was very
happy to have the dome-shaped base which
lends itself to painting mandalas. It is painted
intuitively and the finished piece is always a
surprise. I never use grids, lines or patterns.

I hope that it delights the eye, lifts the spirit and reminds us that we might want to celebrate this life while we are still here.

"I am a 26 year resident of Colorado and I have been married to my Husband, Brian, for 24 years. We raised our two amazing children in the 'burbs of Broomfield. It was only after moving to our retirement home in Canon City that I discovered I had an inner artist.
I am a Mandala Artist. I paint with acrylic paints, including metallic, pearl and glitter paints. I usually paint on canvas and wooden boards but I also paint on stone, wood, ceramics, fabrics and more!
I love the idea of Wabi-Sabi, of finding beauty in imperfection, of revering authenticity above all. I paint entirely free-hand with no forethought of pattern or design. My paintings tend to be surprising even as I paint them. I like to think of them as a download of sacred geometry from the universe!
My paintings are created with a clear intention to delight the eye and lift the spirit, they represent my devotion to God and to humanity.

In general, I am in constant awe of the universe and its many celestial bodies. But more specifically I love the images that NASA has captured, and thought the image of the protostar L1527 would work great for this project. So I wanted to push myself to create something a bit out of my comfort zone, but also relevant to the type of work and research that is happening in the Springs from different space entities.

I'm 9 years old and I'm a Champion wrestler, I got 1st place at the Butthead Wrestling Tournament in Oregon last year - truth- google it! I'm addicted to my iPad and Roblox but I will turn them off long enough to paint a butterfly for the Rotary like I did last year.

Emerick Wissbaum is 9 years old and lives in Bend, Oregon. He is a wrestler and plays soccer and pickle ball. He has painted two butterflies for the Rotary Auction previously, this is his third. His favorite color is pink; the pink body of his butterfly is his favorite part. Painting with his sister Finley, and both grandmothers this year was boring but he wants to do it again next year

I was born, raised and am still living in Portland, Oregon, "City of Roses". In my working years I was employed as a dental hygienist as well as a music ensemble director at Holy Cross Church. My husband and I have the honor of sharing three amazing grandchildren with Laurel Bahe and Charlie Montoya. It was because of this that I was introduced to this event a few years ago while visiting Laurel with our grands - they were all painting butterflies for the fundraiser.

This year she invited me to paint a butterfly, as I would be visiting Colorado Springs in July. I was apprehensive, not being an artist, but I am honored to be able to participate by painting my first Flight butterfly for this worthy cause.

I'm 12 years old and I like to paint. I live in Bend, OR and come to Colorado Springs to visit my Grandmother in the summertime. I love horses and dogs. I ski and play soccer and put up with my two brothers the best that I can.

Finley Wissbaum is 12 years old and lives in Bend, Oregon. She loves to draw and play soccer. This is the third butterfly she has painted for the Rotary Auction. Her summer visit to her grandmother's house in Colorado Springs has coincided with the butterfly painting timeframe, so she paints a butterfly during her visit. This year her 'other' grandmother came to visit Colorado Springs too so she go to paint with both her grandmothers. Finley's favorite color is blue and she painted several iterations of the blue side of her butterfly before calling it done.

Reveille grew up in Pueblo, Colorado and painted with old enamels and created with the wood leftover from her father's building projects. She was intrigued by the flamboyant colors in bugs and flowers, and the running together of the paints. She ruined many uncleaned brushes with enamel paint. Reveille graduated from South High School in Pueblo, CO. in 1960 and attended two years at Pueblo Jr. College. She has taken many workshops and classes around the world and her paintings hang in England, Scotland, Japan and around the US. Reveille is currently teaching out of her house/studio. She is past President of Pike's Peak Watercolor Society and also Arati Gallery where she was a member for 15 years in in Old Colorado City.

I've loved drawing and painting sea creatures recently and have gotten pretty good at it. I wanted to take they and combine it with the traditional monarch butterfly pattern to make it a unique piece.

I am 17 and currently a junior at Palmer High School where I am taking on the IB program. I have loved creating art for as long as I can recall. Not only do I do art but I also love to write stories and read books. Fantasy is one of my favorite genres and inspires a lot of what I do in my daily life. I am in a rigorous art class at Palmer so I know what hard work is like. I have also worked on a few murals in my past and taken on many art projects.

This butterfly is inspired by the Hamadryas amphinome butterfly, commonly known as the "Red Cracker" because of the red-orange outer wings and the crackling sound the male butterflies make as they take to flight. Most commonly found in Mexico and Central America, this butterfly with a pattern of bright blue spots on the inside wings can also occasionally be found in south Texas.

"Sally Ann Wilson is an artist working mostly in watercolor and oils. She has been juried into and won awards in multiple local, regional, and national shows. Sally Ann recently retired from her Associate Professorship position in the music department at Pikes Peak State College where she also taught Art Appreciation and was the Fine Arts Coordinator.
A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York City where she studied art history with faculty from Columbia University, Sally Ann has performed and toured nationally and internationally with various orchestras and chamber ensembles. She studied painting locally with Tom Owen, Taffy Mullikan, and Laura Ben-Amots. She has also attended numerous painting workshops with world-renown artists such as John Salminen and John Seerey-Lester.
Sally Ann draws inspiration from the mountains west of Colorado Springs where she lives with her musician husband, Clark Wilson."

I was inspired by the Mourning Cloak butterfly from Colorado. Mourning Cloaks have vibrant yellows and deep purples inside their wings, and the outside resembles bark.

Born in Arizona, raised in Colorado, with Alabama roots, Jessica Jones uses a pop art style to capture emotions while using traditional techniques. After a thirteen year bartending career she has hung her apron and put her family, along with her lifelong passion of creating art, first. Jessica is an outsider artist and although she has not undergone traditional art school she has still found opportunities to nurture a creative career path in our community. Muolirals in downtown businesses, volunteering for the American Heart Association and teaching embroidery classes are only a small portion of Jessica's artistic career.

Spring is HUGE for me. I lost my mom in 2021, and her birthday was on March 4th. So I wanted to create a colorful bouquet for her to see from Heaven. Corny but from the heart. She is smiling.

I am a Colorado native and the daughter of a nationally known artist, the late John Scott of Kittredge , Colorado. As a single parent, I raised my "now grown" children with the help of my mother, who is now in need of care from me. I have two grandchildren, a canine child and three feline daughters. Creating gives me the therapy needed to relieve the occasional tension that life can bring.

My inspiration is the bold prints, bright colors and geometric designs from the art of the 1970's. It was a decade of great change in the art world, characterized by pop art, op art and psychedelia.

Expression through various forms of art is my passion. I have produced bronzes, stone carvings, wood carvings and wood masks, decorative gourds, paintings and glass-on-glass mosaics. My goal is to create a sense of happiness and joy to the observer, to allow them to pause and realize there is infinite possibility within each of us. My hometown is Colorado Springs although I now live in Canon City, CO. I enjoy playing the piano, listening to music, being outdoors, and spending time with my family.

The symbolism of Dragonflies in multiple cultures (change, transformation, adaptability, self- realization). Which is also the affect zentangles have had for me in life. Zentangles are a way I meditate while creating art.

My name is Georgia. I am a self taught mixed media artist. I started doing art as a young girl to cope with the strife of having a heart disease which limited what I could do physically. Over the years, art has been a therapeutic outlet for trauma and health issues in my life. I do custom work, such as portraits, when I am not creating for professional settings. Shapes from nature and colors of butterflies inspired this design. I wanted to capture classic design motifs for a butterfly that represented flight from a variety of viewpoints.

Jeanie has taken art classes at Pikes Peak Community College. She has exhibited in several shows at the Downtown Studio and Cacao Chemistry. Jeanie has worked in public and school health as a registered nurse. Travel and community volunteer work are two of Jeanie's passions. Volunteer service trips have provided opportunities to study flora and fauna in their natural environments. Organic forms from nature and science inspire her work.

Dragonflies visit a wide variety of different flowers and are excellent pollinators because they can carry a large amount of pollen from one flower to the next. It seemed appropriate to paint this dragonfly with a variety of different flowers in full bloom.

"Sally Ann Wilson is an artist working mostly in watercolor and oils. She has been juried into and won awards in multiple local, regional, and national shows. Sally Ann recently retired from her Associate Professorship position in the music department at Pikes Peak State College where she also taught Art Appreciation and was the Fine Arts Coordinator.
A graduate of the Juilliard School in New York City where she studied art history with faculty from Columbia University, Sally Ann has performed and toured nationally and internationally with various orchestras and chamber ensembles. She studied painting locally with Tom Owen, Taffy Mullikan, and Laura Ben-Amots. She has also attended numerous painting workshops with world-renown artists such as John Salminen and John Seerey-Lester.
Sally Ann draws inspiration from the mountains west of Colorado Springs where she lives with her musician husband, Clark Wilson."

My inspiration is color and light. I felt like the world is in a gray shadow. I wanted this to burst out of that shell and include different hues from different angles and a bit of sparkle in our lives.

I am a Colorado native and the daughter of a nationally known artist, the late John Scott of Kittredge , Colorado. As a single parent, I raised my "now grown" children with the help of my mother, who is now in need of care from me. I have two grandchildren, a canine child and three feline daughters. Creating gives me the therapy needed to relieve the occasional tension that life can bring.

This butterfly was inspired by the opulence of art nouveau jewelry pieces. That era was all about organic lines and stylized nature. I feel like that lends itself to the butterfly template. I used exciting materials to really bring that to life and give it an aged patina, such as the use of 24 karat gold leafing and foils under the paint to really make it sparkle and shine. At the same time I wanted to create a piece that was easy to live with and that would complement its environment whether displayed indoors or outside. The use of emerald green, gold and iridescent teals are soothing and beautiful.

Laissez le Bon Temps Rouler

The phrase means "let the good times roll" and
has often been associated with the Mardi Gras
celebrations in New Orleans. While I have
never had the luck to be able to attend myself,
what I have seen in movies and on TV tells me
that this is one of the world's biggest parties! A
party and a reminder that you only live once.
My butterfly represents a flight of joyous
celebration.

It is painted with acrylic paints, mostly metallic
and iridescent paints. The entire piece is also
painted with an iridescent finish that gives it lots
of sparkle and shine, especially when the sun
shines on it. The colors are primarily Mardi Gras
colors, gold, green and purple, and I added
some fuchsia and glitter just for fun. I paint
entirely freehand and intuitively, no lines, grids
or patterns. My intention when I paint is to
delight your eyes and I think this one does a
good job.

It has been a long time of very little to celebrate
so my wish is that we all find some "good times"

to enjoy very soon. We deserve it!

As the Colorado Mountain Winter gives way to Spring, new life emerges, ready to thrive during the hot and joyous months of Summer. I'm inspired by the abstract expression of flowers and plants that breathe life into the CS Flight butterfly community. Rather than using traditional wing patterns, I design a less representational image as I like push the envelope.

As a former Art Teacher and current AVID tutor at Campus Middle School in Centennial, I am drawn to causes that support children. AVID helps the least served students complete a college preparatory path; often they will be the first in their families to go to college. CS Flight is a superb way to combine my art and support of students!

I love fishing. I grew up swimming with fish in lakes, catching them, and sometimes even cooking them. There is nothing better then a day of fishing.in fact, I have taken student fishing for the day to educate them about nature.

My name is Michele Arthur and I have been an educator for the past 29 years in Colorado Springs. I love teaching my students new and different ways to explore art through a variety of materials. I am also a practicing artist specializing in hand painted ornaments, tie dyes, ceramics and leather jewelry. When I am not working on my art or teaching, I love to garden.
