Dumortierite crystals are formed most often in metamorphic rocks that are rich in aluminum and under high temperatures. The vitreous crystals' colors range from brown to blue and green, as well as more rare pink and violet. Color variations occur with the substitution of iron and other elements for the aluminum.

It's often mixed with other copper-minerals, such as Azurite, Chrysocolla, Dioptase, and Malachite. Most of the crystals on the market come from either the Sonoran desert of the American Southwest or the Kalahari desert in southern Africa. The crystal was named after Lemuel C. Shattuck, a saloon keeper, cowboy and miner in the Wild West. Shattuckite is a stone of truth and balance. It helps us to see what has gone wrong and how to bring it back into rightness.
