Carol Bouyoucos
(b. 1959, Cleveland, Ohio. Lives and works in Mt. Kisco, NY)

Carol Bouyoucos' surrealistic compositions are inspired by botanical imagery and early American and European landscape painting, filtered through the lens of modern technology. The artist shoots her compositions with an iPhone and manipulates the images with various in-phone apps and photoshop. Strange Marsh, 2023, is a hauntingly elegant example of the artist's innovative photocollage technique.

Bouyoucos' practice has always been informed by technology. The artist embraces the aesthetic tension that digital mediums impose on photographic images as a tool to enhance and, conversely, as a catalyst to raise questions around perceptions of reality and preconceived notions about the photographic medium. The artist weaves historical allusions into her visual narratives to evoke feelings of nostalgia for a deeper societal connection with nature, whereas her implementation of digital platforms suggest shifting realities around our relationship to the environment in the 21st century.

Cai Guo-Qiang

Cai Guo-Qiang's renowned practice spans diverse mediums including drawing, painting, installation, video, and performance art. He first began experimenting with his signature gunpowder paintings in Quanzhou, China, and continued evolving his practice to include his now iconic outdoor explosion events during the artist's time in Japan from 1986 to 1995, before moving to New York. Drawing upon Eastern philosophy and contemporary social issues as a conceptual basis, Cai's often site-specific artworks respond to the local culture and history and establish a dialogue between viewers and the larger universe around them. Energy Study, 2022, is a dynamic example of Cai's ability to masterfully harness the potentially destructive power of gunpowder to create beauty out of chaos.

Cai has been the subject of numerous international solo exhibitions and career retrospectives at venues including: National Art Center, Tokyo (2023); Palace Museum, Beijing (2020); Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow (2017); Los Angeles County Museum of Art (2012); Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2008); and Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (2006), among many others. He is included in numerous international museum collections such as the Fondation Cartier, Paris; Metropolitan Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and Tate, London, to name a few. Cai was the recipient of a Golden Lion at the 48th Venice Biennale and served as Director of Visual and Special Effects for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2015, the artist's explosion event Sky Ladder became the centerpiece of an eponymous Netflix documentary, directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald.

Wu Jian'an

Wu Jian'an uses paper to create ambitious and complex collage-based works that often take the form of large installations. The range of references in his compositions embrace a global lexicon of mythological, art historical, and contemporary references that span from ancient Chinese paper techniques, to abstract expressionism, to Matisse's late cut-out collages. Untitled, 2008 is from the artist's Xingtian series, inspired by the eponymous Chinese hero from antiquity. This warrior, depicted in various stances of might in this collection of intricate paper cutouts, was fierce, passionate, and brave-never losing his sense of purpose. Wu equates this mythic figure to the courageousness hidden in us all which rises to the fore amidst the cacophony and complexities of contemporary life.

Wu has been the subject of numerous international solo and group exhibitions at institutions including: Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, Kalamazoo (2023); State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (2021); MoCA , Shanghai (2020); China Pavilion, 57th Venice Biennale, Venice (2017); and Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (2015), among others. His work has been collected by public institutions including: Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, Berkeley; Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art at Cornell University, Ithica; Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Fine Art, Boston; Oscar Niemeyer Museum, Brazil; Fukuoka Asian Art Museum, Japan; Beijing Minsheng Art Museum, Beijing; CAFA Art Museum, Beijing, and others. Wu currently serves as Associate Professor of the School of Experimental Art, Central Academy of Fine Art, in Beijing, China.

Wu Chi-Tsung

Wu Chi-Tsung's practice spans a variety of mediums including photography, installation, video, and mixed media. He is best known for his experimental and interdisciplinary explorations of spatiality and time, and innovative approach to reconsidering traditional Chinese art practices. This experimental spirit, coupled with Wu's seamless mastery of both Eastern and Western art techniques, led to the creation of his most recent Cyano-Collage series beginning in 2016. The Cyano-Collages are fabricated through a very physically demanding and time-consuming process using cyanotypes-a type of photographic technique invented in the mid-19th century that involves exposing photosensitive paper to sunlight-that the artist painstakingly collages to create sublime abstractions, beautifully exemplified by Cyano-Collage 179, 2023. The Cyano-Collages equally conjure vast seascapes and mountain vistas evocative of traditional Chinese Shan Shui (mountain-water) landscape painting.

Wu's first solo museum exhibition, Wu Chi-Tsung: Synchronicity, was organized by the Katonah Museum of Art in 2023. The artist has been the subject of numerous international group exhibitions at venues including: UBS Art Gallery, New York (2022); Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara (2021); St. George's Hall, Liverpool, UK (2018); Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art, Hiroshima (2016); and Asian Art Biennial, Taipei (2013). Wu's work is in public collections including M+, Hong Kong; Santa Barbara Museum of Art; and Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; among many others.

Ali Banisadr

Ali Banisadr's work demonstrates a careful balancing act between chaos and order, and abstract and figurative painting and drawing. His complex, expansive paintings are rich with figurative allusions rooted in autobiographical narratives, sonic recollection, invented stories, world history, collective memory, and mythology. The artist creates complex, turbulent worlds whose syncopated rhythms corral a multitude of references from art history as well as allusions to our own tempestuous times. The Rising Sun, 2022, is a masterful etching that captures the dynamic, painterly quality characteristic of Banisadr's paintings.
