Celebrity Guest Sean Casey
Prior to his major league career, Casey was a standout player for the University of Richmond, where he was picked as an All-American and helped lead the Spiders to their first-ever win in an NCAA Tournament game in 1995. That year, he also won the NCAA Division I batting title with a .461 average. He was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the second round of the 1995 MLB Draft. Casey was inducted to the Richmond Athletics Hall of Fame in 2003 and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
In January of 2022, Flying Squirrels Charities rebranded in order to focus on the current needs of the community and surrounding areas. Now, our mission is to impact RVA by enhancing educational opportunities, providing athletic programming and bringing the FUNN into all we do! Flying Squirrels Charities strives to strike out the social determinants that negatively influence our community while also fostering a place for inclusion.
Four Pillars of Focus
Ways We've Helped the Community in the Past
All-Star Legacy Fund: Every year since 2019, Flying Squirrels Charities has partnered with Genworth to give away a 1-3 scholarships a year to students in the Richmond Public Schools system to help continue their education through a 4-year college of their choice.
Richmond 34 Scholarship: Since 2022, Flying Squirrels Charities has awarded a one-time $5,000 scholarship to a student in the Greater Richmond Region attending either Virginia Union University or Virginia State University.
Renovating Richmond's Recreation: Flying Squirrels Charities was created in 2014 to improve 16 youth baseball fields in the surrounding areas with the help of the Richmond City Parks and Recreation Department. Some of those field projects include Bellemeade Field, Blackwell Field, Fairfield Field, Henderson Complex, Hotchkiss Field, Martin Luther King Jr. Fields, Powhatan Community Center, Summer Hill Playground and Westover Community Center.
Donations: Flying Squirrels Charities has raised money for other non-profit partners, including The Holli Fund, Community Foundation, The Robins Foundation in collaboration with RVA Strong, Richmond Education Foundation, Nourish Henrico, Chesterfield Food Bank, VCU Health Rainbow Fund and various Little League Associations around the metro Richmond area.
