JOE ADDISON (1986) is an Omaha based visual artist who specializes in historic and experimental photographic processes. When not working in his Benson studio, Joe co-curates Petshop Gallery, and is a darkroom technician and teaching artist at the Union for Contemporary Art. Addison's education includes an AAS from Metropolitan Community College, Omaha, in 2010 and a BFA from the University of Colorado Denver in 2014. EKTA AGGARWAL is a multidisciplinary artist based in Delhi and Los Angeles. Shortly after earning her MFA degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, ANGE ALTENHOFEN was diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition that could eventually lead to permanent blindness. This diagnosis forced her to rethink her creative practice, and she began to create work that relied on physical interaction and the sense of touch to communicate meaning. This resulted in the Braille Series, an ongoing body of sculptural work that incorporates braille text, represented by beads and gemstones, onto various materials and forms, and she continues to explore tactility and interaction in her work. After recently relocating to Iowa, Altenhofen was selected as an Iowa Artist Fellow in 2019 by the Iowa Arts Council and the NEA, and received a New York Foundation for the Arts Grant and a Rauschenberg Foundation Grant in 2021. Her interactive sculptures were featured in a solo performative exhibition at the Des Moines Art Center in 2022.

"My current project focuses on one figure painted in varying hues of pink, caught in a reflective memory of different eras of their life. The image is the idealized version of what that moment of time represents to them. I am playing around with setting and time to indicate seasons and to thread in themes of growth and reflection, while at the same time I am keeping color pallets and repeated symbols consistent throughout the body of work to stabilize the viewer and the subject in her universe. Themes of western and hispanic culture like cowboy hats and cowboy boots are prevalent in my current work; they stem from my characters 'The Bikini Cowboys' and 'Sunburn Babes' that appear in my paintings and film work. Being born in New Mexico and having a really interesting relationship with my hispanic heritage is an underlying element that I subtly poke at. The figures in my work are thrusted into their ideal environments, but don't always know if they are content or even safe. I play with this idea to capture the playful and joyful scenes, but they are filled with, and overshadow, the deeper conversations that are happening beneath the surface within all of us. How can one make the best out of their situation while at the same time using the act of joy as resistance? The use of material is experimental and pushes boundaries with three dimensional surfaces and bright fluorescent colors that sit next to each other to create energy and tension. I use traditional painting methods, but I also pipe on thick acrylic paint using a frosting piping tool to create thick textured lines of paint on the canvas. Film and printmaking are also heavily used in my practice. Copper etchings, relief, and silkscreen prints are methods I use to create preciousness around humor and nuance."

SHAWN TESEO BALLARIN is an artist living in Lincoln, Nebraska. He received his BFA from the University of Nebraska and attended graduate school at Illinois State University. CASEY BECK is currently a third year MFA candidate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln where he is studying ceramics. His current research focuses on the process of soda firing, which utilizes soda ash, and its volatilization inside the nearly 2300°F gas-fired kiln to glaze his wares. The wares he makes are utilitarian and encourage a dialogue between user, process, material, and self. After completion of his BFA in ceramics at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls in 2019, Beck spent two years living and working in Saint Paul, Minnesota. During this time, he continued to make pottery and research soda firing, work in the Sales Gallery at Northern Clay Center in Minneapolis, MN, and taught classes. Beck is a 2023 Ceramics Monthly Emerging Artist and will be a resident artist at the Faenza Art Ceramics Center in Faenza, Italy in Summer of 2023.

MARGARET BERRY is a mixed media artist in Lincoln, NE. SARAH J BIRD is an Artist and Recreation Therapist residing in Omaha, NE. As a recreation therapist, Sarah encouraged residents in skilled nursing communities to find purpose through art, music, and leisure pursuits. Sarah's drive to create was rekindled shortly before the pandemic when she was introduced to the beauty of gold, silver and colored leaf from Pat McDermott, a resident where she worked. Throughout the pandemic, Pat mentored, guided, and solidified Sarah's lifelong dream to pursue art. Pat passed away in October of 2021 and a collaborative gallery exhibition, with Steve Joy (Pat's Mentor), was held in his honor in June of 2022. RUSSELL BRAUSCH is an artist living in Bozeman, Montana. Brausch utilizes Sho-sugi ban method of burning wood to black in combination with stencil and traditional oil painting processes to create scenes inspired from wildland firefighting. Through his research and investigation of forest conservation methods, tracing back from the birth of the forest service to today, he challenges the failure that is fire suppression. COREY BROMAN was born in Lincoln, NE in 1979. He started working with glass shortly after high school in 1998. After initially working with Ed Fennel and several of his students at Crystal Forge in Omaha, NE, Corey joined the studio glass program at Hastings College to further his glassmaking education. There he became an apprentice and assistant to the professor of glass, Tom Kreager. Corey became involved in intensive Venetian-style glass making techniques, while collaborating with other glass artists at the college. In addition to Corey's time at Hastings, he has taken several workshops at the Corning Museum of Glass and other colleges and universities with glass programs. Each workshop focused on different techniques and skills that apply to glassblowing, glass sculpting, glass casting, and kiln forming. In 2003, Corey built his own glass studio in Omaha. He has shown his work privately and in gallery and museum exhibits primarily in the Midwest and on the west coast.

JAMIE BURMEISTER is an artist and musician based in Omaha, Nebraska. Jamie received an M.F.A. in Sculpture from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 2005. His 20 year art career has found him working with many diverse approaches to art making. He experiments with sculpture, painting, drawing, video, sound, installation and interactivity to create artwork in response to his personal experience of the world. KEITH D BUSWELL graduated with a BFA in art University of Nebraska--Lincoln. CAITLIN CASS is a cartoonist and installation artist based in Omaha, NE. Her comics, prints and drawings explore failing systems and irrational hope. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Washington Post and The Nib. She was a 2018 NYFA Fellow in fiction and a 2020 recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Artworks grant for her installation at the Burchfield Penney Art Center. She is currently working on a graphic novel about radical imagination and U.S. suffrage history, due out with Fantagraphics Books in spring 2024. Caitlin is Assistant Professor of Studio Art, Illustration and Time-Based Media at the University of Nebraska Omaha.

Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1977, and raised in the California Bay Area, RICHARD CHUNG earned his B.A. degree from the University of California, Berkeley, under the guidance of ceramic artist Richard Shaw. Seeking further artistic growth, Chung relocated to Omaha, Nebraska, where he worked as a studio assistant for the esteemed artist Jun Kaneko. This invaluable experience allowed him to fully immerse himself in the daily life of an artist, providing unique insights into both the creative process and the business aspects of art. JOHN COHORST is a Midwest-based artist, creating both functional and sculptural art objects. He holds a BFA and MA with a concentration in functional ceramics from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas. DEREK COURTNEY is a mixed media artist living in Omaha Nebraska. He was born and spent his first 18 years in Putnam County, West Virginia. He attended the University of Nebraska Omaha. SHANE DARWENT is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice mines the commercial vernacular that lines American roadways to inform experimental photographic works, large-scale sculpture, and site-responsive installations. JENNIFER LING DATCHUK is an artist born in Warren, Ohio and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Her work is an exploration of her layered identity - as a woman, a Chinese woman, as an "American," as a third culture kid. Trained in ceramics, Datchuk works with porcelain and other materials often associated with traditional women's work, such as textiles and hair, to discuss fragility, beauty, femininity, intersectionality, identity, and personal history. Her practice evolved from sculpture to mixed media as she began to focus on domestic objects and the feminine sphere. Handwork and hair both became totems of the small rituals that fix, smooth over, and ground women's lives. Through these materials, she explores how Western beauty standards influenced the East, how the non-white body is commodified and sold, and how women's - globally, girls' - work is still a major economic driver whose workers still struggle for equality.
Datchuk holds an MFA in Artisanry from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a BFA in Crafts from Kent State University. She has received grants from the Artist Foundation of San Antonio, travel grant from Artpace, and the Linda Lighton International Artist Exchange Program to research the global migrations of porcelain and blue and white pattern decoration. She was awarded a residency through the Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum to conduct her studio practice at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Germany and has participated in residencies at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China, Vermont Studio Center, European Ceramic Work Center in the Netherlands, Artpace in San Antonio, Texas and the John Michael Kohler Arts/Industry Residency in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.
In 2017, she received the Emerging Voices award from the American Craft Council and in 2020 was named a United States Artist Fellow in Craft. Her work has been featured in a solo publication "Jennifer Ling Datchuk: Half" through French and Michigan in San Antonio, TX, and included in "Artpace at 25", "Black Cube: A Nomadic Museum", the Guardian, Vogue, and American Craft Magazine. Her work is in the collection at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, San Antonio Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. She is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Arizona State University and lives and maintains a studio practice in Phoenix, Arizona.

HANNAH DEMMA is an avid outdoorswoman, outdoor educator, and lifelong Nebraskan. SABINA EASTMAN is an artist living in London pursuing a masters degree in Curating Contemporary Art. FALLEN FRUIT is an art collective that uses found objects, ephemeral materials, and public spaces. The collaborative art projects began in Los Angeles in 2004 by making maps of "public fruit"- fruit trees that grow on or over public property. Fallen Fruit uses cartography and geography as an indexical tool to create serialized and site-specific works of art that often embrace public participation. The work of Fallen Fruit includes photographic portraits, experimental documentary videos, public art installations, and exhibition projects. Using fruit as a method of interrogating the familiar, Fallen Fruit investigates urban space, ideas of neighborhood, and new forms of citizenship. From protests to proposals for new urban green space, Fallen Fruit's work aims to reconfigure the relationship of sharing and explore understandings of public and private. Recent exhibition projects include commissioned works by LACMA, Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art, Athens Biennale, Prospect 3+, Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, Portland Art Museum, Wexner Center for the Arts, among others. Fallen Fruit was originally conceived by David Burns, Matias Viegener, and Austin Young. Since 2013, Burns and Young have continued the collaborative work.

Austin Young is an artist based in Los Angeles who works primarily in photography and video. His art collective, TRANIMAL Workshop has shown at Machine Project, The Hammer, and BAM. He has worked with performance artists such as Diamanda Galas, Margaret Cho, Skinny Puppy, Holy Body Tattoo and The Velvet Hammer Burlesque creating their recent images. MARCUS FISCHER is a first-generation American sound and visual artist who creates, collects, and transforms audio into immersive, layered soundscapes that accompany performances/installations. Her photographs and artist books have been exhibited nationally and internationally and collected by two dozen museums and libraries worldwide. In 2017, University of New Mexico Press published her monograph, Terraria Gigantica: The World under Glass that included photographs made in her artist residency at Biosphere 2. Her second trade book, Field Guide to a Hybrid Landscape, published in 2023 by University of Nebraska Press, deconstructs what was once the world's largest hand-planted forest. It is the most complete visual examination of the Nebraska National Forest at Halsey before over half the living trees burned in 2022 and 2023 wildfires.

RAMON M GUZMAN is a local Nebraska-based artist, art is his passion and he has been creating for over 15 years. Guzman has an Associate's degree in fine arts from Metro Community College, which gave him the foundation to keep honing his craft. Guzman works in a variety of different mediums; however, his favorite mediums are wood and spray paint. Guzman is inspired by his own imagination, as well as what he encounters in life. LAURA HALLEN is a multimedia artist, a Master Gardener, herbalist, and Certified Aromatherapist. The ways in which she identifies herself as an artist and botanist are manifested in her work. She mimics intricate patterns of plants by abstracting them through a variety of media, including painting, mixed media, and installation. Hallen's art is an ongoing investigation of growing and interacting with plants, understanding their usefulness in our daily lives, and works based on her fascination with the botanical world. PHIL HAWKINS is a LA based multidisciplinary contemporary artist focusing on installation and sculpture. SHAUN ILAHI's work explores a colorful commentary of perspectives, across mediums and styles, on the universal spirit of humanity. SALVADOR JIMENEZ-FLORES is an interdisciplinary artist born and raised in Jalisco, Mexico. He explores the politics of identity and the state of double consciousness. Jimenez-Flores addresses issues of colonization, migration, "the other," and futurism by producing a mixture of socially conscious installation, public, and studio-based art. His work spans from community-based work, drawing, ceramics, prints, and mixed media sculpture.
Jimenez-Flores is a member of The Color Network, an organization that promotes the advancement of people of color in the ceramic arts and assists artists develop, network, and create dialogue while maintaining a place for a database, resources, and mentorship. He served as Artist-In-Residence for the city of Boston, Harvard Ceramics Program, Office of the Arts at Harvard University, and Kohler Arts Industry. Jiménez-Flores is a recipient of Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors Grants and The New England Foundation for the Arts, Threewalls' RaD Lab+Outside the Walls Fellowship Grant, and he is a 2021 United States Artist Fellow. He is an Assistant Professor in ceramics at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

ALEX JOCHIM is an Omaha, NE based photographer and community organizer. He typically shoots 35mm film with a Canon AE-1, but often utilizes alternative film types, cameras, or techniques. STEVE JOY is a mixed media artist living in Omaha, NE who works primarily with oil paint, Japanese ink gold foil, silver foil, and shellac on paper and fiberglass. JUN KANEKO was born in Japan in 1942, came to the United States in 1963 to study at Chouinard Institute of Art in Los Angeles, and became part of the Contemporary Ceramics movement in America in the late 60s and early 70s. The following decade, Kaneko taught at some of the nation's leading art schools including Scripps College, Rhode Island School of Design, and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Based in Omaha since 1986, Kaneko has worked at several experimental studios around the world. Over the course of his career he has partnered with industrial facilities to realize large-scale, handbuilt sculptures. Kaneko is increasingly drawn to installations that promote civic interaction. He has completed over fifty public art commissions, including the most recent, Glass Tower, in downtown Lincoln, NE. MACKAYLA KELSEY is an artist, teacher, and researcher of emerging media arts currently pursuing a PhD in Educational Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, where I work closely with the Johnny Carson Center for Emerging Media Arts and Lincoln Public Schools' Bay High Focus Program. As a teacher, I teach between creative coding, exploring the possibilities of computer code as an artistic medium, and embodied arts, engaging in somatic and kinesthetic practices for expression. CASSIA KITE is an interdisciplinary artist who created Soundstitching, a multimedia project that transforms color from a hand-stitched image into a musical composition that can be interpreted by a musician and/or performance artist. Kite has collaboratively produced large-scale work for chamber ensemble and dancers using color-coded graphic scores derived from her hand-stitched tapestries. Kite's work was premiered at the KANEKO in Omaha, Nebraska in July of 2017. She has been featured as an experimental composer and visual artist in music festivals, museums and universities. Kite has been awarded artist in residence at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts, The Hambidge Creative Residency Program and is the recipient of the Paul J. Smith Excellence in Fibers Award from the Fiber Art Network, the Dixon Ticonderoga Award of Excellence, the Sarasota Art Educators Association Award and the Ringling College of Art and Design Award in 2022.

LAINE KNOWLES is a second generation immigrant who lives and works in Omaha, Nebraska. She has been making art for as long as she can remember. Starting out as an oil painter, she switched her focus when she discovered printmaking in college, because she cannot resist complication. She specializes in photolithography and relief printing. Laine's work externalizes her complex internal world to aid her understanding of herself. As a self-taught artist RENEE LEDESMA draws inspiration from her love of folk art and all things handmade, as well as her Mexican heritage. She works in clay and hand-coil builds all of her creations. Renee has been part of the Omaha Arts community for more than 20 years. Ledesma shows at many local art galleries as well as takes part in numerous group exhibitions, art auctions and public art projects. TODD MCCOLLISTER has two art careers: Sculptor and Furniture Maker. The sculptures are wood and mixed media (including wire, string, and found objects), and the furniture pieces are almost entirely wood. He earned a BFA in Sculpture and Photography in 1996 from Texas Christian University and an MFA in Sculpture in 2000 from Stony Brook University. He then moved to New York City, first pursuing Sculpture and shifting to Furniture in 2006. In 2014 McCollister brought what he learned back to his hometown of Omaha, NE, and founded Long Grain Furniture. He is an active member of the Omaha art community and believes in supporting his fellow artists as a path to everyone's success. SOPHIE NEWELL is a mixed media artist from Manchester, England. Through her collages she aims to elevate the mundane and revive items that have been forgotten, discarded or abandoned. Newell earned her BFA from Edinburgh College of Art, Scotland, in 2009. KYLE NOBLES was born in the Twin Cities in Minnesota. He received his BA in Art History and Studio Arts (emphasis in printmaking) from Hamline University in 2015, and his MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2018. He has shown his prints and drawings across the U.S. and internationally. Nobles was the recipient of the Hixson-Lied Fellowship and the Edgren Fellowship, and held residencies at the Penland School of Craft, the Kimmel-Harding-Nelson Center, Nebraska Innovation Studios, and the Morgan Conservatory. Nobles' work is engaged with the human experience, and the ways that identity and our sense of self shift over time. He has a background in many of the arts in addition to the visual, particularly in theatre and dance. This commitment to artistic expression of all kinds has influenced him in innumerable ways and continues to provide inspiration and enrichment in his life and work.

CHAD MICHAEL OLSEN is an artist of abstract atmospheres that explore textures and color palettes as a way to communicate emotions. When painting, he often finds himself working to capture the atmospheres of nature and the emotions from being in these places. For him, being in nature is a solitary experience-one he can only truly share with others through his paintings. His professional art career began in Nebraska in 2010 after studying painting at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln under Aaron Holz and Keith Jacobshagen, followed by several years of living and working in New York City. While there, he sought solace in the natural world, psychologically returning to the Nebraska grasslands as a form of meditation and as a prevalent theme in his work. In 2017, he returned to Nebraska where he currently resides and maintains a studio in Kearney.

LEE EMMA RUNNING is an artist based in Omaha Nebraska who creates sweeping public installations on glass, as well as arresting objects using cast iron, enamel, glass, bone, and handmade paper. For the last 15 years, she has been using this work to engage audiences in conversations about the impact of human-built systems on the natural world.
She was a 2023 Foundry Resident in the Arts/Industry program at Kohler and a 2022/23 Artist in Residence with Opera Omaha. A permanent installation of her work will be built into Roskens Hall at the University of Nebraska Omaha in 2024. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Des Moines Art Center, National Taiwan University of the Arts, Form and Concept Gallery in Santa Fe, and PACE Gallery in Council Bluffs. She has been awarded residencies at Ucross, Jentel, Santa Fe Art Institute, and Pine Meadow Ranch Center for Arts and Agriculture.
Running is the recipient of a 2023 Populus fund grant from the Union for Contemporary Art in Omaha and was a 2017 Iowa Arts Council Fellow. Her work is represented by Olsen Larson Galleries.
These plates are cast directly from fabric and hand-carved wax. The enameled surface has been sanded back to the botanical reliefs and leafed with a thin layer of copper. These objects allude to scientific sample plates holding images of wild roses and deadly nightshade from the Nebraska State Herbarium.
Lee works with cast iron because of the connections of an element found in the body, industry, and land. Her work has historically combined unlikely metaphorical materials: Bone and gold, handmade paper and animal fur, bone and glass.
The materials of iron and powdered glass join each other seamlessly through heat. The enamel protects the iron, which is otherwise vulnerable to rust and decay. A fragile glass shell protecting a heavy, strong metal reminds us how different materials are fragile alone, but combine into strong structures. Much of the natural world follows a similar structural model of protection.

EMMA MCKAY RYAN grew up on a farm outside of Minden, NE. In May of 2022, she graduated from Doane University in Crete, NE earning a BA in studio arts with a professional emphasis in drawing. LISSA SCOTLAND explores nature, flowers, landscapes, and the "pretty" subjects. She questions, "what makes something beautiful?" Using layers of paint, Lissa creates depth within the piece, staying curious with her colors and marks. Her use of color is often bold and surprising. Born in 1978, in Omaha, Nebraska, Lissa grew up in the Midwest. She found painting to be a therapy for the crippling anxiety that had taken over her early years. COLIN C. SMITH's paintings and sculpture expand the conventions of painting. Beginning with the joys of material, color and the graphic image, Smith's newest works are aggressive, buoyant and difficult to classify. The wall works reference minimal painting and expressionism, yet their colors and forms are fully contemporary. The floor sculptures are playful and casual, yet their offhandedness belies a rigorous process and intentional mark making. Colin is interested in making works that charge retinal and interior spaces. They move when you squint and can throw you off balance if you get too close. His abstractions have a liveliness and spirit that is rare in contemporary painting, particularly in works that contain such a restrained and focused bag of tricks. Colin received his BFA in 1988 from the University of Nebraska - Omaha (UNO) and his MFA in 1992 from Drake University. He teaches at UNO.

Born in Puerto Rico (1986) and based in Miami, MISAEL SOTO received their MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor's Degree in Art History from Florida Atlantic University. Misael was the Art in Public Life Resident with the City of Miami Beach, where they founded the Department of Reflection. Misael has exhibited at MCA Chicago, Open Engagement 2015, the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami, Material Art Fair in Mexico City, David Castillo Gallery in Miami, and Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, amongst others. BARBARA TAKENAGA is an abstract painter who makes images that are abstract and representational, microscopic and cosmic. PATTY TALBERT was born and proudly raised in North Omaha Nebraska. She earned her BFA in Fine Arts with a concentration in Studio Arts in 2001. Her work is inspired by techniques used in batiking. When the elements of batiking are translated onto wood or canvas, there is a building up of different colors patterns and textures. When sanded down the relationship between these three elements creating unique Harmony within the elements of each design. Patty chooses to celebrate her vibrant and colorful heritage with all this Glory of patterns and textures of geometric form. Her honors are among many but her most recent honor includes Most Outstanding Artist in the OEAAward 2022 as well as one of three featured artist at NFM display of a Celebration in Black Culture January 2023.

IREN TETE (she/her) is a sculptor working primarily in clay. Originally from Sofia, Bulgaria, she is currently based in San Diego, CA where she is assistant professor of ceramics at San Diego State University. She holds a BFA in kinesiology and health sciences from the College of William and Mary and an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Iren's studio practice centers ceramic materials, architecture, and language. Investigating poetic and theoretical systems of thought, seeing, and navigation, her sculptures collapse language of the industrial-infrastructural and human-organic. Iren has participated in residencies at the Hambidge Center, the Archie Bray Foundation, Zentrum fur Keramik, and will be in residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in summer of 2024. Iren's solo exhibitions include those at the Sarasota Art Center, Galleri Urbane, Parallelogram Gallery, and Gallery 371. ASHLEY VAK is an artist in Omaha, NE. She studied at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and received a BFA in Book Arts. Vak uses recycled postcards to create sculptural books. Each sculptural book is hand-cut and hand-sewn with two needles using the butterfly link stitch. When completed, the book takes on an organic shape and life of its own.

TRAVIS DON WARNER is an interdisciplinary artist. Born in Omaha NE, he currently resides in Chicago working towards his bachelors of Fine Arts at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Travis draws inspiration for his work from antiques, toys, and tools. Travis has recently been exploring themes related to the working class. Embracing both skills used by the working class and artistic expertise, Travis blurs the boundaries between a trade and art by combining techniques and materials from both fields. Although he is color blind, Travis still paints and draws but has mainly been focusing on sculpture works as well as ceramics.

DENNIS D WATTIER's goal is to create works of art that highlight his turning and carving skills in a creative manner, but also in some cases, to tell a story. He has created his own unique style and uses special techniques to create intricately designed vessels and bowls. His work has been shown locally, as well as in venues throughout the midwest. The use of different laminated hard woods in his work has been evolving to include more sculptural forms, which add a certain vitality and creative edge to the vessels. WATIE WHITE (b. 1971) is an Omaha-based painter, printmaker and public artist. BETTY WOODMAN (1930 - 2018) began her nearly seventy-year engagement with clay in the 1950s as a functional potter with the aim of creating beautiful objects to enhance everyday life. In the 1960s, the vase form became Woodman's subject, product, and muse. In deconstructing and reconstructing its form, she created an exuberant and complex body of ceramic sculpture, drawings, and prints. Their signature is her reflection of a wide range of influences and traditions and an inventive use of color. Many of these traditions Woodman experienced first-hand: she traveled extensively, finding inspiration in cultures around the world.
Woodman was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, raised in Newton, Massachusetts, and studied ceramics at The School for American Craftsmen in Alfred, New York from 1948-1950. She traveled to Italy for the first time in 1951, solo, having worked to save just enough money to buy an ocean liner ticket. Woodman found her way to Fiesole, and an unplanned apprenticeship in the studio of Giorgio Ferrero and Lionello Fallacara that altered and clarified the course of her work. She returned to Italy several times in the 1950s and 60s. She married George Woodman in 1953 and they moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1956. She returned to Florence in 1966 when she received a Fulbright-Hays Scholarship. In 1968, she and George bought a farmhouse in Antella, Italy, which profoundly affected her work and where they and their children spent significant time throughout their lives.
Woodman had her first one-person exhibition at the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska in 1970. She taught at the University of Colorado, Boulder from 1978 - 1998 and later became Professor Emeritus. When she and George bought a loft in New York City in 1980, she decided to stop making functional pottery and began showing her sculptures at contemporary galleries in New York and Los Angeles.
Betty Woodman's work is included in more than fifty public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; Musee des Arts Decoratifs Paris, France; and Museu Nacional do Azulejo, Lisbon, Portugal.
