About the artest,

I was born in Transylvania, Romania during the Communist era, a world with Kafkaesque undertones that led the individual on a covert quest for expression, in terms that would not be questioned yet the message was still intact. Music, art, understanding human condition and the universe we live in were part of my entire life passions. Providing psychiatric care to patients diagnosed with a serious mental illness was a true inspiration and a master teacher. I never thought of myself as being a painter, however, the pandemic forced me to find an outlet to maintain balance. I welcome challenges and I bought art supplies, canvases, and there I was, staring at a blank canvas not knowing what to do or where to start. I've learned that letting go controlling what goes on the canvas and letting the canvas direct the painting and my artwork, ultimately not dictating one what to see but rather, allow the audience the freedom to see what resonates with them. The result is a seismograph of emotions and movements that occur at the time of the birth of the painting. I am in awe with abstract expressionists artists that were able to convey a message through nontraditional ways. That movement resonates with me because they valued expression versus perfection, vitality over finish, fluctuation over repose, the unknown over the known, the veiled over the clear, the individual over society and the inner versus the outer like William Seitz, mentions. Art is defined as: the expression of human creativity in physical form. However, I believe that art goes beyond the physical barriers, it touches the soul. As a self-taught artist, I am interested more in the creative process rather than the result. When I am in front of the canvas, I don't go with a plan, I allow it to happen naturally, being in the moment, where time stops, and I am one with the canvas and the paints. From that standpoint, it might be suggestive that I am an adept of accidental painting however, if I am to place myself into a category, I would say that I am an action painter. What is most important for me is letting go of all standards that confine the soul and allow it to be raw, vulnerable, imperfect. With every painting, I discover a part of myself which I would like to share with the audience. It is quite evident that I am a huge fan of Jackson Pollock and what fascinates me about his art is that every time I look at one of his paintings, I find something new. With every painting, I am sharing a piece of my life, emotions, movement, passion at that time and my goal is to never stifle the individuality of the audience in defining my painting and controlling the response. By allowing the flow of feelings, movement, and openness of my mind, delivering ideas without the worry of scrutiny, my hope is that the audience will find a piece in every painting that elicits an emotional state, a spontaneous, individualized response that is liberating and unique. If my art resonates with one person, that's all that matters.

My name is Leslie and I am originally from Minnesota. I lived in Canada with my dad as a young person before landing in Arizona.

My whole life has been hard. I started working at the age of 13 alongside my dad.

I have been married and divorced and had two children. I lost my son to fentanyl. My mental health suffered greatly from these life events.

Recently, I moved out of a foster home and now live with my daughter and her fiancé. I hated going home after Program before moving in with my daughter.

Then I found Copa Health and the West Village Day Program. I have made real connections. I used to isolate myself. With the art program, I have found a way to express myself. I have more confidence and self-esteem.

"I love art more than eating."

With the Work Program, I have been able to improve my financial means and gain new skills.

Without Copa Health, I don't know what I would do.

I am 40 years old, born in Denver Colorado. I love glitter, jewelry, and perfumes.

I began attending Freestone in January 2016. When I am at Freestone, daily, I present a video of how to bake and cook different meals. I love to play different types of cards and enjoy collecting them.

Before coming to the Village Day program, I was constantly in and out of the hospital and treatment centers. That time of my life was a very dark period and I was without hope.

Copa Health and the East Village was my first experience with a day program. Now I have friends and a purpose in my life. My mood has improved. It is like night and day, the change this program has made. People from my past would not recognize me today.

Art has brought so much more to my life. I never knew I could be an artist until I started painting with Starr in her art class with the Village Day Program. Now my walls are covered with my paintings. I get so many compliments. My self-esteem has increased. I feel proud of my creations.

Because of Copa Health, I look forward to waking up in the morning. I know I am going to have something positive and meaningful to do when I get to the program.

Before coming to Copa Health, I was home doing nothing all the time. Now, I have art class and groups that teach me new things. I get to socialize with everyone.

I love the lunches at Program. I love my job where I get to help at the front desk. I feel proud of myself.

I like how the staff start groups with stretches and gets everyone to participate.

There was a time when I was depressed and I knew I had to come to groups. The West Village is my safe zone.
