Lauren Greenfield: "Models Backstage at Prada's Spring Show," Milan, 2009

A portrait from the book, "Generation Wealth," in which Greenfield examines the influence of affluence over the last 25 years, illustrating the globalization of materialism, celebrity culture and social status. Her thought-provoking collection explores how "keeping up with the Joneses" became "Keeping Up With the Kardashians," magnifying the aspirational gap between what we want and what we can afford. The exhibit is not about the rich, but the pervasive desire for more.

Lauren Greenfield (American, b. 1966)

Lauren Greenfield is a filmmaker and photojournalist, best known for her color photographs that portray the lifestyles of affluent teens and preteens. Her work reveals the surprising and often disturbing face of contemporary American youth. Greenfield's photographs have been featured in publications including National Geographic, Time Magazine, and Vanity Fair. Her work includes the films/photo-reportages: "THIN," "kids + money," "Generation Wealth," and "Fast Forward: Growing Up in the Shadows of Hollywood." Greenfield has received the International Center of Photography's Young Photographer Infinity Award, the National Geographic Society Documentary Grant, and an award from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts. Her photographs have been collected by prominent institutions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Getty Museum, the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, and the French Ministry of Culture. Greenfield was born in Boston, grew up in Los Angeles, and graduated from Harvard University.

Title: "Young Girl"

The young girl came into Reed's view while he was researching a documentary film on sustainable logging. For Reed, the image evokes memories of the housing project where he grew up in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. "There was no anger in the memory, just a recognition of the difficulties that so many humans face," he says. The photograph, along with eight others by Reed, recently ended up being viewed by Pope Francis.

Eli Reed (American, b. 1946)
Eli Reed's coverage of the Lebanon war (1983-87), the 1986 Haiti coup and the 1989 U.S. intervention in Panama caught the attention of Magnum Photos where he became the first Black member of the agency. Reed has received the World Press Award, the Overseas Press Club Award, the Lucie Foundation Award, and was a runner-up for the Pulitzer Prize in 1982. In 2015, Reed photographed the effects of poverty on American children for the documentary "Poorest in the Land of Plenty." He has worked on several major motion pictures, and his documentary "Getting Out" was shown at the New York Film Festival and honored by the 1996 Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame. His photography has also been featured at the prestigious Visa Pour l'Image Festival du Photoreportage in France. Reed was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University and a professor of photojournalism at The University of Texas at Austin.

Title: "Rita"

Donna Ferrato: "Rita," Philadelphia, 1985

Rita, a survivor of domestic violence, was beaten by her husband in the presence of her sons. The portrait of Rita, with two black eyes, ran on the front page of The Philadelphia Inquirer in 1985. Nine years later, she agreed to have her portrait on the cover of Time magazine, becoming the first battered woman on the cover of a national publication. She eventually pressed charges against her husband and divorced him. Donna Ferrato, who captured the image, says, "Rita is unbeatable."

Donna Ferrato (American, b. 1949)

Donna Ferrato is known for her fearless and powerful documentation of domestic violence. In 1982, the Japanese version of Playboy asked her to photograph couples who epitomized America's culture of conspicuous consumption. After she saw one wealthy husband brutally beat his wife, Ferrato embarked on a decades-long mission of documenting the abuse endured by women. She visited women's shelters, emergency rooms and prisons, and accompanied police on numerous domestic violence calls. Her photographs were published in Life, The New York Times Magazine, Time, and The Los Angeles Times, among others. Ferrato's honors include the W. Eugene Smith Grant, a Kodak Crystal Eagle Award, and the Lucie Foundation photobook award for her latest book, "Holy." Her first book, "Living With the Enemy," sparked a nationwide discussion on domestic violence and women's rights. She founded the Domestic Abuse Awareness Project, a non-profit that produces exhibitions about domestic violence and supports women's shelters.

Young pandas relax in the grass at Dujiangyan Panda Base in Sichuan, China. There are currently fewer than 2,000 giant pandas in the wild. Their breeding secrets have long resisted the efforts of zoos, and the mountainous bamboo forests they call home have been decimated by development and agriculture. Over 30 years, researchers from the China Conservation & Research Center have been working on breeding and releasing pandas, augmenting existing populations and protecting their habitat. And they're finally having success. They are taking captive-born pandas and releasing them back into the wild.

Ami Vitale (American, b. 1971)

Ami Vitale is a National Geographic photographer, writer, speaker, and documentary filmmaker. She has traveled to more than 100 countries, lived in mud huts and war zones, contracted malaria, and donned a panda suit to get closer to her subjects. Her award-winning work illuminates the unsung heroes working to protect wildlife. Vitale has been named one of the most influential conservation photographers of her generation. InStyle magazine named her one of 50 "Badass Women" alongside Jane Goodall, Christiane Amanpour and Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She has received several prestigious awards, including six World Press Photo awards, the Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding Journalism, and the International Photographer of the Year award. Her bestselling book, "Panda Love," depicts the secret lives of pandas. Vitale is the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Vital Impacts, which empowers youth to become climate activists. She lectures for the National Geographic LIVE series and is featured on the 2023 "National Geographic Explorer" television series.
