Title: "Idomeni"

Refugees from the Idomeni camp cross a raging river that was freezing cold from melting snow. Fleeing wars in Syria and Afghanistan, repression in Iran, and poverty in South Asia, refugees camped at the border between Greece and Macedonia. When the border crossing was closed, they waited for weeks in a makeshift tent encampment in the mud, the cold, and the rain. Attempting to find another way across the border, some of them set out on foot, searching for an opening.

James Nachtwey (American, b. 1948)

James Nachtwey is the world's foremost conflict photographer. Beginning with his coverage of "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland, Nachtwey has documented armed conflict and social unrest across the globe for Time magazine. In 1994, he covered the first free elections in South Africa, where he was on the scene when security forces killed photojournalist Ken Oosterbroek and wounded Pulitzer Prize-winner Greg Marinovich. Nachtwey has suffered injuries while covering violent events around the world, including the Iraq War in 2004 and the 2014 political protests. On September 11, 2001, Nachtwey was near the World Trade Center when the attacks occurred and documented the aftermath. Nachtwey was the subject of the Christian Frei-directed film, "War Photographer," which was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary film. He has received the Overseas Press Club's Robert Capa Gold Medal five times, a World Press Photo award twice, and was one of three winners of the 2007 TED Prize.

Salgado captures the magnificence of the natural world on a voyage to Antarctica. Traveling for days to find this unique iceberg, he considers the work to be his first true photograph of the journey and describes its structure as that of a medieval castle. As with all his works, the photograph is shot with black-and-white film and resonates with Salgado's adherence to simplicity. This work is from the series "Genesis," a project sponsored by the United Nations, the United Nations Environmental Project, UNESCO, and The Guardian. "Genesis" is Salgado's eight-year mission to document environments and communities around the world in their pure state.

Sebastiao Salgado (Brazilian, b. 1944)

One of the world's most renowned photojournalists, SebastiÃo Salgado originally trained as an economist. After completing his Ph.D. in economics in 1971, he worked at the International Coffee Organization in London, where he was required to make frequent trips to Africa. His desire to document these experiences sparked his interest in photography. By 1974, he was freelancing as a photojournalist for the Sygma agency in Paris, and later joined Magnum Photos. Salgado has produced a number of extended documentary series, which have been the subject of several books. These include "Workers," a worldwide investigation of the increasing obsolescence of manual labor that won the Arles International Festival's prize for best photography book. Salgado has won numerous major awards for his work, including the Eugene Smith Award for Humanitarian Photography, two ICP Infinity Awards, and the Erna and Victor Hasselblad Award. Salgado is a knight of the French Legion of Honor and a member of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.

Portrait of Louis Armstrong contemplating his instrument backstage on his opening night performance in Las Vegas, Nevada. Armstrong, also known as "Satchmo," was among the most influential figures in American jazz. He died a year after the photograph was taken, in 1971. His career spanned five decades and several eras in jazz history.

Eddie Adams (American, 1933 - 2004)

Eddie Adams' career spanned 45 years, covering 13 wars and hundreds of high-profile celebrities. He joined the Associated Press in 1962, where he did three tours of Vietnam. His image of a Viet Cong prisoner's execution at close range is one of the 20th century's most iconic photographs. His 1979 coverage of the Vietnamese boat people helped persuade the U.S. government to admit 200,000 Vietnamese refugees. Prior to the AP, Adams was a Marine Corps photographer in Korea and a staff photographer for several newspapers. In 1980, he joined Parade magazine, where he remained until his death in 2004. With 22 World Press Awards, Adams is one of America's most published and awarded photographers. He co-founded The Eddie Adams Workshop with his wife, Alyssa, which offers seminars for aspiring photojournalists. Adams' archive is housed in the Briscoe Center for American History at the University of Texas.

Lynn Goldsmith: "Patti Smith," New York, 1975

Portrait of Patti Smith in New York City during a 1975 protest against the Shah of Iran. Photographer Goldsmith was nearby when she heard the sound of the protests. She asked Smith, with whom she has a close relationship, to join her on the scene. Smith arrived wearing a hand-painted "Free Keith" T-shirt, a reference to the guitarist and co-founder of The Rolling Stones who was arrested on drug charges in 1967. Goldsmith asked the protesters to wear their masks so as not to cause any trouble for them and their families. For Goldsmith, the image is a reminder "that we are not alone in our desire for freedom."

Lynn Goldsmith (American, b. 1948)

Lynn Goldsmith is best known for her photographs of music personalities. Her prints have been collected by the Smithsonian, The National Portrait Gallery, MOMA, and The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Her photographs have appeared in numerous publications, including Life, Newsweek, Time, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and People. Goldsmith was the youngest woman member of the Directors Guild of America and directed the first rock show on network television. She wrote, produced, and performed on the album "Dancing for Mental Health," which featured Sting, Steve Winwood and Todd Rundgren. The album won critical acclaim and Goldsmith's single "Kissing With Confidence" reached #3 on the British charts. Goldsmith founded the first photo agency focused on celebrity portraiture. In a recent high-profile legal battle with the Warhol Foundation, the Supreme Court ruled in Goldsmith's favor, protecting the intellectual property of visual artists. Goldsmith has published 15 books, including the New York Times bestseller "New Kids."

Joe Frazier lands a punch during his "Fight of the Century" with Muhammad Ali at New York's Madison Square Garden on March 8, 1971. The fight was the biggest boxing match in history and arguably the most anticipated and publicized sporting event ever. It was the first time that two undefeated boxers who had held the world heavyweight title fought each other. Frazier decked Ali in the 15th round and won the bout in a unanimous decision. It was Ali's first loss in 31 fights. Ali beat Frazier in their next two fights, the last one the "Thrilla in Manila" in 1975."

David Hume Kennerly (American, b. 1947)

David Hume Kennerly's career spans 50 years and more than 100 countries. In 1972, at age 25, he became one of the youngest Pulitzer Prize-winners in history. Later, he was appointed President Gerald Ford's White House photographer. Kennerly's photographs have appeared on more than 50 major magazine covers. He has photographed 10 U.S. presidents and 12 presidential campaigns. His archives are housed in The University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography, alongside legendary photographers Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, and W. Eugene Smith. Kennerly is the author of six books. His prints have been collected by the Library of Congress, the National Portrait Gallery and the Smithsonian among other major institutions. Kennerly's work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, the Annenberg Space for Photography, the Portland Art Museum, Houston Center for Photography, Savannah College of Art and Design, The University of Texas, and Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignan, France.

For Kirkland, the photo shoot of Monroe was like a fantasy: "I'd had a very small-town background and here, the superstar of all superstars was five feet away from me." Monroe removed her robes and got under the white silken sheets to pose for the portrait. Still in his twenties, Kirkland was embarrassed and shot the photographs as quickly as he could. He believes that the photographs were so strong because his "sexual desire was channeled into the camera."

Douglas Kirkland (Canadian, 1934 - 2022)

Douglas Kirkland was a Canadian-born photographer, renowned for his celebrity photography. His most recognized works include the alluringly intimate photographs of Marilyn Monroe. Other iconic figures Kirkland has captured include Elizabeth Taylor, Coco Chanel, and Marlene Dietrich. A one-time staff photographer for Life magazine and Look magazine, he photographed on the sets of more than 100 major motion pictures, including "Titanic," "Moulin Rouge," and "The Great Gatsby." His books include "An Evening with Marilyn," the New York Times bestseller "James Cameron's Titanic," and his monograph, "A Life in Pictures." His photographs of Hollywood stars are in the permanent collections of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Australian National Portrait Gallery, and the National Portrait Gallery in London, among many other institutions. Kirkland's honors include the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers, a Lucie Award from the International Photography Awards, and an Award of Excellence from the Canadian government.

Steve Jobs shares thoughts with his team about how technology evolves in 10-year cycles. In 1985, Jobs was fired from Apple in a boardroom coup. He launched his personal computer company NeXT in a quest for redemption and allowed Menuez a rare opportunity to photograph his team over the next three years. Every few months, Jobs and his fledgling team would travel to a nearby resort with their families for an intensive off-site meeting. Menuez's photographs of Jobs' venture evolved into the backbone of his book, published 30 years later, "Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution in Silicon Valley."

Doug Menuez (American, b. 1957)

After quitting his blues band in 1981, Doug Menuez began freelancing for Time, Life, Newsweek, Fortune, USA Today, The New York Times Magazine and many other publications. He covered the AIDS crisis, homelessness, politics, five Super Bowls and the Olympics. His portrait assignments included Presidents George H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton, Cate Blanchett, Robert Redford, Lenny Kravitz, Mother Teresa, Jane Goodall, and Hugh Jackman. His award-winning advertising campaigns and projects for global brands include Chevrolet, FedEx, Nikon, GE, Chevron, HP, Coca-Cola, Emirates Airlines, Charles Schwab, and Microsoft. Menuez's fourth book, "Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution in Silicon Valley 1985-2000," has been published in 17 languages. More than 100 million people worldwide have seen the project through the book, exhibits, lectures and press coverage. His extensive archive of more than one million images was acquired by Stanford University Libraries in 2004.

Jean-Pierre Laffont: "The Kiss," Watkins Glen, New York, 1973

A young couple kisses as the chaos of the crowd swirls around them at a rock festival. On Saturday, July 28, 1973, the summer jam held at the Watkins Glen raceway drew the largest rock festival audience in American history with an estimated 600,000 fans. For Laffont, the image captures the feeling of optimism among America's youth as the Vietnam War was ending. A storm transformed the field into pools of mud, but the joy and love were palpable. The photograph was printed on the back cover of Life magazine.

Jean-Pierre Laffont (French, b. 1935)

Algerian-born French-American photographer Jean-Pierre Laffont has covered some of the most significant moments of his time including historic American social and political events like the riots against the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the nascent gay and lesbian liberation movements, and the Watergate scandal. He is a founding member of the U.S. office of Gamma Press Images. After co-founding the Sygma Photo agency with his wife Elaine in 1973, Laffont's work expanded to include coverage in Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. He produced the first ever global photo essay on child labor between 1970 and 1980. The essay won Overseas Press Club and World Press awards. His photographs have been featured in major publications worldwide including Time, Newsweek, The New York Times, Paris Match, Le Figaro Magazine, Stern, Bunte, Epoca, The Sunday Times in London and Manchester.

Soldiers and loved ones attend a funeral for fallen comrade Denys Anatskyi in Kharkiv, Ukraine, on June 24, 2022. Anatskyi died near Chuhuiv from mortar fire while fighting during the Russian invasion. "Sometimes the dignity with which people deal with adversity is most revealing," says Guzy. "To tell their stories is an honor, we are challenged in our work not only to examine issues and expose problems but also to find poetry in everyday lives." This photograph won the White House News Photographers Association's "Eyes of History" contest for 2023.

Carol Guzy (American, b. 1956)

An internationally acclaimed news photographer, Carol Guzy is one of only five people, and the first journalist, to win four Pulitzers. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 1986, 1995, 2000 and 2011 for her reportage in Colombia, Kosovo, and Haiti. Guzy has been named Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association three times, and Photographer of the Year by the White House News Photographers Association eight times. Eleven days after Russia invaded Ukraine, Guzy traveled to Kyiv. In Ukraine, she made powerful photographs that portray the loss, suffering, and hope experienced by Ukrainians during the conflict. The images are featured in the recent book "Relentless Courage: Ukraine and the World at War" alongside the works of other world-class photographers. Guzy worked for the Miami Herald from 1980 to 1988 and The Washington Post from 1988 to 2014.

The portrait of a child in a wading pool was part of a retrospective exhibit, "An Outsider," at the international photojournalism festival, Visa Pour L'Image in Perpignan, France. The exhibit features 50 years of Richards' photography, documenting American poverty, the plight of the mentally disabled, and the human cost of drugs and war. Richards recalls his experience capturing the image: "The young mom told me that her 'baby girl' had suffered a seizure that morning. When I knelt beside the child, she looked to be falling asleep or dreaming."

Eugene Richards (American, b. 1944)

Eugene Richards is a photographer, writer, and filmmaker. During the 1960s, Richards volunteered with VISTA, a government program and part of the "War on Poverty." He helped found a social service organization and a community newspaper, Many Voices. Photographs he made in these years were published in the first of his three monographs, "Few Comforts or Surprises: The Arkansas Delta." After joining Magnum Photos in 1978, he undertook assignments on drug addiction, pediatric AIDS, and family life in America. He has directed seven short films and wrote 16 books. "Exploding Into Life," which chronicles his wife's struggle with breast cancer, received Nikon's Book of the Year award. His other honors include an Award of Excellence from the American College of Emergency Physicians and an Infinity Award for Best Photography Book. Richards' recent books include "The Blue Room," a study of abandoned houses in rural America, and "War Is Personal," on the consequences of the Iraq War.

The portrait, from Tuft's "Aftermath" series of photographs that capture the ultraviolet light found in the magnificent landscape of Iceland. Four months after the Eyjafjallajokull volcano's dramatic eruption, Tuft made her third visit to Iceland. Surveying the volcano's crater and the country from a Cessna 172 single-engine aircraft, she documented the dramatic and magical landscape. The vivid, saturated colors of the landscape were heightened by ultraviolet light. Tuft's lens captures Iceland's geological wonders and otherworldly features, highlighting the power and austerity of nature amidst ongoing global environmental and atmospheric destruction.

Diane Tuft (American, b. 1947)

Diane Tuft is a mixed media artist who has focused on photography since 1998. Fascinated by the environmental factors shaping the Earth's landscape, Tuft has traveled to remote places, including the North and South Poles, to document the visual effect of climate change. She is the author of three monographs - "UNSEEN: Beyond the Visible Spectrum"; "Gondwana: Images of an Ancient Land"; and "The Arctic Melt: Images of a Disappearing Landscape." She has had solo exhibitions at several museums and galleries, including the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles, the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Pace Gallery in New York City. Her work is included in the permanent collection of The Whitney Museum of American Art, The International Center of Photography and The Parrish Art Museum, as well as numerous private collections.

The image is from Smolan's National Geographic cover story documenting Robyn Davidson's travels across the desolate Australian outback, accompanied only by four camels and a dog. The trip began as a gesture of independence but quickly turned into an all-out battle of wits against the forces of nature and civilization. The Australian outback, as seen through Smolan's camera, is an ancient awesome landscape swept by rain, heat and dust and inhabited by all varieties of marauding wildlife. In this final image from the legendary adventure, Davidson, or "the Camel Lady," arrives with her camels for a dip in the Indian Ocean, 1,700 miles and nine months after they left central Australia.

Rick Smolan (American, b. 1949)

Rick Smolan is a former photographer for Time, Life and National Geographic, best known as co-creator of the bestselling "Day in the Life" book series that captured everyday life in the United States, Japan, Australia, Russia, and other countries. Smolan's Against All Odds Productions combines compelling storytelling with state-of-the-art technology to capture the human face of emerging topics. His projects include bestselling illustrated books, TV specials, apps, and exhibits. They have been featured on the covers of Time, GEO, Fortune, Stern, and The London Sunday Times. His books adorn coffee tables worldwide, including "A Day in the Life of America," "The Human Face of Big Data," and "Blue Planet Run." Smolan's book "From Alice to Ocean" is based on his National Geographic cover story about Robyn Davidson, a young woman who crossed the Australian outback accompanied by only four camels and a dog. Davidson's narrative about her trip, "Tracks," became a bestseller. In 2013, it was turned into a film starring Mia Wasikowska as Davidson and Adam Driver as Smolan.

Title: "Red-Crowned Cranes"

Red-crowned cranes perform a happy dance in Hokkaido, Japan-tancho tsuru in Japanese. The cranes are a "national treasure" and have been a beloved symbol of longevity, love, luck, happiness and fidelity for centuries. The couple will mate for life. Courtship displays and shrill crying are thought to strengthen their bond. The red-crowned cranes are popular icons in Japan. Cities and streets are named for them; they are used in metaphors; and folded into tiny paper birds that adorn temples and shrines. Though they are extremely rare birds, their images can be seen throughout Japan.

Michael Yamashita (American, b. 1949)

Michael Yamashita is an award-winning, 40-year veteran of National Geographic with a vast photographic portfolio, most notably in Asia. He has traipsed with camels across the Taklamakan Desert, scaled peaks in Tibet, and journeyed the length of the Great Wall. He has published more than 30 National Geographic magazine features, as well as 10 books, including "Mekong: A Journey on the Mother of Waters," "Marco Polo: A Photographer's Journey," and "The Great Wall: From Beginning to End." He has two documentary films to his credit, "Marco Polo: The China Mystery Revealed" and "Treasure Fleet: The Adventures of Zheng He." His most recent book, "Shangri-La: Along the Tea Road to Lhasa," took him to the far reaches of western China and the Himalayas to capture the fast-disappearing ancient culture of Tibet. Yamashita has taught at major photo workshops and art centers in the United States, as well as Myanmar, Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, Taiwan, and China.
