In this body of work, Ratcliffe returns to this foundational relationship of seeing and recording the natural world. Through contemplation of the varied and seemingly infinite structure of plant life and in awe inspired by nature and the ephemerality of looking, she creates with her pen, ink, and paper a literal life line. She examined the root masses, the flying tangles and dark, mysterious clusters, overlaps, juxtapositions, leaves, stems, in between spaces, the feminine mossy undergrowth in an effort to capture something ephemeral in personal time.

About the Artist:

Ratcliffe was born in Bolinas, California. She received her early artistic education at the Universitas Gadjah Mada in Indonesia and earned a BA from University of California in Santa Cruz, California. She studied at the Ecole de Louvre in Paris and received an MFA from Hunter College in New York. Ratcliffe was awarded the Graf Travel Grant from Hunter College and the Textiles Study Grant from the University of Santa Cruz. She has participated in various exhibitions across the U.S., including a solo show at Susan Inglett Gallery, New York and recent group shows at the Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York, Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York, the Bolinas Museum, California, Roberts & Tilton, California, and Geoffrey Young Gallery, Massachusetts. Ratcliffe received a Janet Sloane Residency Award at Yaddo in 2005. She lives and works in New York City.

Description:

In my drawings, I use an alphabet of symbols-most of which I've gleaned by deconstructing cartoon characters. The drawings are often biomorphic-themed, and made in an unhinged, expressionist style. By using coded symbols as the building blocks for world-building, I try to create multiple layers of information so, to me, the creatures in my drawings are 'landscapescapes'.

About the Artist:

Adam Green is an artistic polymath -- a songwriter, filmmaker, visual artist, and poet. A co-founder of The Moldy Peaches and author of ten solo-albums, his songs have been performed by artists as diverse as The Libertines, Carla Bruni, Kelly Willis, Dean & Britta, and Will Oldham. Green's paintings and sculptures have been the subject of exhibitions in America, Asia and Europe, including a 2016 show at the Fondation Beyeler Museum in Basel, Switzerland. He wrote and directed the feature film The Wrong Ferarri (2010), the first feature film shot entirely on an iPhone, and Adam Green's Aladdin (2016) which Buzzfeed.com described as "the trippiest movie ever made." Most recently, Green has authored a series of graphic novels and poetry books. He is currently writing the screenplay to The Wrong Ferarri 2.

About the Artist:

Hisham Akira Bharoocha is a Japanese-born mixed race (Japanese / Indian Myanmar) multi-disciplinary artist who has been based in Brooklyn for 25 years, concentrating on creating visual art, musical performances, and installations. Bharoocha graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1998 with a BFA in photography. He has had solo exhibitions in Japan, New York, and The Netherlands, not to mention the countless exhibitions of his work that have been displayed around the world. Bharoocha is also known for organizing large-scale musical performances with up to 100 musicians performing at once, often focusing around drumming but including other instrumentation. These performances have happened at renowned spaces such as Rockefeller Center Plaza, MoMA, MoCA, The Sydney Opera House (Australia), MoMA PS1, Barbican (London) to name a few.

Description:

Throughout history people indulge in the tradition of bestowing symbolic and mythical qualities on animals. From animal deities to depictions as pets and guides. Animals are studied or even presented as peers. Many of our relationships with animals and perspectives overlap, defined by fantasy, proximity and distance.

This work underscores the use of animals as allegory. These spirit animals emphasize the reverence as well as its isolation from the physical world formal representations with unexpected revelations.
