During her 105 years of life, Beatrice Wood (1893-1998) remained intensely dedicated to the arts and participated in some of the most important moments of 20th century American art - from her relationship with Marcel Duchamp to her apprenticeship with ceramicists Gertrud and Otto Natzler. An icon in the annals of art history, Wood's rebellious and nonconformist spirit has inspired generations of artists.

This delightful gold bowl features four simple figures that hug and support the form. The lustrous gold glaze is a signature of Wood's style. Metallic salts are drawn to the surface of the glaze during firing by starving the kiln of oxygen, resulting in an almost burnished surface with an irregular shine that catches the eye and plays with the light.

In 1917, Wood founded and edited The Blind Man and Rongwrong magazines in New York City alongside the French artist Marcel Duchamp and writer Henri-Pierre Roché. These magazines were two of the earliest manifestations of the Dada art movement in the United States, granting Wood the title of the "Mama of Dada."
