Rendered in her signature style, this figurative piece by Ahrong Kim is a delight to behold. The sculpture features a girl in an elaborate costume that combines fashion with the natural world - tropical leaves and vibrant blooms. The figure balances an argyle teddy bear on her head, looking up and to the left with a defiant gaze. Subtle touches of gold luster can be found throughout the work, adding a material preciousness to an already precocious sculpture.

Kim's technical skill and emotional power are on full display with Prologue. Each element of the sculpture is rendered brilliantly and relates to a facet of the artists' psychological state as she grapples with life in her new chosen home in the US and works through complex relationships in her life. Viewers are invited to examine how the artists' emotions are on display and, in the process, feel more in touch with their humanity.

A Resident Artist at The Clay Studio from 2013 to 2015, Ahrong Kim earned her BFA in ceramics from Kon Kuk University in Korea in 2008. After completing her MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 2013, Kim received the Mima Weissman Award at the Ceramics Program, office for the Arts at Harvard. Her work has been shown in major exhibitions and she has won many prizes at art fairs around the US and internationally. Through her work, Kim aims to express emotions through a varied range of psychological states, utilizing colors and figurative form to tell a complex story.

There's nothing like a splash of yellow to brighten a room and your spirits. This stunning wall-hanging sculpture by internationally known artist Susan Beiner showcases her love of natural forms in a monochromatic assemblage. Each carefully constructed piece of flora is attached to a circular base, creating a bouquet that will never fade. Some of the forms mirror familiar blooms while others explore shapes created from the artist's imagination. The opulent style of Beiner's work stems from her interest in 18th century European porcelains, which she translates into three-dimensional forms. This sculpture can be appreciated as Beiner's contemporary take on the ebullient rococo forms found in places like the French royal palaces of Marie Antoinette.

A Resident Artist at The Clay Studio from 2005 to 2006, Susan Beiner is a ceramic artist and professor in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University. Her sculptural installations expose concern about the effects on the fragile ecosystem of humans, animals, and plants. Her objective is to create an ecological balance between the conflict that has arisen between nature and culture.

Beiner has exhibited nationally and internationally, has received numerous awards and residencies and her work is included in diverse and prestigious collections such as The Yixing Ceramics Museum, China, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA, Gyeonggi Museum of Contemporary Ceramic Art, Korea, Princessehof Keramiek Museum, Netherlands, New Taipei City Yingge Ceramics Museum, Taiwan, and the Long Beach Museum of Art, CA to name a few.

She was named Joan R. Lincoln Endowed Professor in Ceramics in 2017. This professorship was created by the Lincoln family in honor of Joan Lincoln's lifelong passion for making, collecting, and supporting ceramic arts.

This lidded jar is an excellent example of Brad Johnson's artistic output. A master of soda firing, Johnson is beloved for his skill throwing large vessels and evocative floral surface decoration. This beautiful celedon sculptural jar would look perfect in any style of home. For a special occasion its new owner could remove the lid and fill it with a showpiece floral arrangement.

About the subject matter of his surface drawings, Johnson says, "Larger pieces offered the benefit of a broader surface and more freedom to develop my surface designs. I enjoy seeing crocuses and daffodils pushing up through the thaw. My studio is surrounded by the tangle of organic symmetry as plants twist and turn over one another and groups of trees work as one to maximize the sun's life giving rays. There is a balance and a rhythm in these things that I find inspirational and humbly try to capture in my carvings. Sometimes these images are bold and clearly visible, while other times I will bury these carvings deep within the surface. As the curious viewer gravitates towards a particular form, the pattern reveals itself, like the hidden depths of a tidepool."

A frequent exhibitor and a Resident Artist at The Clay Studio from 1998 to 2003, Brad Johnson is a functional potter living just outside of Philadelphia where he has built his studio and kilns. Johnson's works illustrate his attention to surface even before he adds carvings to the piece. During her 105 years of life, Beatrice Wood (1893-1998) remained intensely dedicated to the arts and participated in some of the most important moments of 20th century American art - from her relationship with Marcel Duchamp to her apprenticeship with ceramicists Gertrud and Otto Natzler. An icon in the annals of art history, Wood's rebellious and nonconformist spirit has inspired generations of artists.

This delightful gold bowl features four simple figures that hug and support the form. The lustrous gold glaze is a signature of Wood's style. Metallic salts are drawn to the surface of the glaze during firing by starving the kiln of oxygen, resulting in an almost burnished surface with an irregular shine that catches the eye and plays with the light.

In 1917, Wood founded and edited The Blind Man and Rongwrong magazines in New York City alongside the French artist Marcel Duchamp and writer Henri-Pierre Roché. These magazines were two of the earliest manifestations of the Dada art movement in the United States, granting Wood the title of the "Mama of Dada." One of the most virtuosic artists using glaze as a sculptural medium, Lauren Mabry is also a distinguished alumna of the Resident Artist Program and a staple of the Philadelphia art community. Mabry's bold use of color, juxtaposition of patterns, and investigations into the transitional state of objects is on full display with this piece. The multicolored structure features a rainbow of graphic lines and dots along with more organic shapes that splatter, run, and expand. Inside the structure black and white ooze down, gathering and pooling at the base of the work. A truly unique and exciting piece that is bound to draw envious eyes.

Mabry's ceramic forms engage with Modernist histories of abstraction - she notes Helen Frankenthaler and Hans Hoffman as inspirations - as well as transforming the field of ceramics through their painterly focus. A master of glaze techniques, Mabry's works are constructed with these fluid materials in mind. Each form articulates pathways for color that reinforce clay's engagement with the earth and its gravitational pull.

A former Resident Artist and teacher at The Clay Studio from 2012 to 2015, Lauren Mabry is originally from Madison, Wisconsin. She received her BFA in ceramics from Kansas City Art Institute in 2007 and her MFA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2012. She has also studied abroad in Kecskemét, Hungary at the International Ceramics Studio. Her most recent residency was at The Archie Bray Foundation For Ceramic Arts (summer '12). Mabry has work in permanent collections at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Overland Park, KS) and The Sheldon Museum of Art (Lincoln, NE). Her exhibitions include The Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, The Clay Studio of Philadelphia, and many more.

Sergei Isupov - Cube Sculpture

A master of nonlinear narration, Isupov's work depicts a woman on one side gazing up at a disembodied hand. A frequent exhibitor at The Clay Studio since the celebrated East European Ceramics show in 1992, Isupov is incredibly skilled as both painter and sculptor. Many of Isupov's works draw from the past to reflect on the present, existing as art that is intensely personal yet universal.

Isupov is the son of a painter and sculptor. While born in Stravapole, Russia in 1963, Isupov was raised in Ukraine from 1964, educated in Kyiv and moved to attend the university of art in Tallinn, Estonia in 1984 at a time when these now separate countries were part of the USSR. Isupov's family, his father, mother and brother, all established artists, currently reside in Kyiv, Ukraine. With the backdrop of the current war there and threats of Russian aggression in Estonia, Isupov's studio work took on an urgency to counter the overwhelming anxiety and concern for his family facing down threats to their safety and the loss of their formerly peaceful lives. Now, with his wife, artist Kadri Pärnaments and their daughter Roosi, they divide their time between two studios/homes in the USA and Estonia.

Josephine Mette Larsen and Ruth Easterbrook Bowl

Through the collaboration of Resident Artists Josephine Mette Larsen and Ruth Easterbrook this gorgeous statement bowl was created. Exemplifying the best of both artists with Larsen's immaculate attention to building and form and Easterbrook's astounding glaze and pattern work.

Josephine Mette Larsen is a Danish-American ceramicist, born and raised in the U.S. to a mother and father who immigrated from Denmark in the 90s. The specific context of Denmark, however, has been instrumental in the establishment of her artistic identity as it carries a long history of high quality craft and design. At the forefront of her practice is keen attention to form, shape, line, and space - fundamental yet instrumental notions from which my hypotheses derive.

Ruth Easterbrook was born in Redwood Valley, California growing up with the hills as her playground. She graduated from Syracuse University with a BFA in ceramics in 2007. In 2014 she began focusing on her career starting with a spring concentration class at Penland School of Craft (NC) and then spending extended time at Anderson Ranch Arts Center (CO) In 2019 Ruth earned her MFA in ceramics at Alfred University. Ruth aims for her pottery to be an active participant in the coming together of people, sharing, and the enjoyment of food. She designs her works with their primary functionality in mind using a range of techniques for each piece, from hand building and throwing on the wheel to mapping out her floral motifs with glazes to create surfaces with textures movement.

Win a private event at The Clay Studio for up to eight people! Our private event workshops offer either Intro to Wheel Throwing or Intro to Handbuilding. We provide an instructor to work with your group and supplies. Additionally, we will provide light refreshments - including beer and wine if appropriate - as part of this prize.

Each participant keeps 1-2 pieces that they decorate with underglazes, and then we clear glaze and fire them after the workshop. We will package the work for pick up by the party host 2-4 weeks post-event.

Kurt Weiser - Teapot with Portrait

Perfect for someone with a healthy taste for the surreal, this teapot by Kurt Weiser is a feast for the eyes. One side of the piece features an androgynous figure inspecting a leaf. The face is in profile and the overall shape of the head mimics the form of the teapot itself. The other side of the piece features a lush forest scene complete with detailed plant-life, a bird just about to take flight, and a hand grasping a bud.

With its arresting imagery and dazzling colors, this piece would make an excellent addition to your collection. Although this work of art can function as a teapot, it follows the Surrealist tendency to take everyday objects and transform them into something fascinating (think of Salvador Dali's sofa that mimicked Mae West's lips or the Lobster Telephone).

A frequent exhibitor at The Clay Studio, Kurt Weiser is a highly regarded American ceramicist and professor. His work - explorations of the relationship between man and nature through narratives rendered in vivid color - are described as "Eden-like." Weiser's work has often taken the form of teapots, vases, and cups, though he has recently begun crafting globes as well.

Weiser studied ceramics under Ken Ferguson at the Kansas City Art Institute, earning his BFA in 1972. In 1976, he earned his MFA from the University of Michigan. From 1977 to 1988, Weiser was the director of the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT, where he explored the possibilities of clay and focused on "somehow express[ing] the beautiful nature of the material." Weiser is currently the Regents Professor at Arizona State University's School of Art.

Karen Karnes - Split Form Vase

This stunning piece offers you the chance to own a work of art by one of the most famous studio potters of the 20th century. This bell-like form from Karen Karnes is a timeless beauty. The piece has a lively surface from its wood firing, resulting in a speckled exterior that evokes chicken eggs or freckled skin. A touch of blue near the top of the work adds a splash of color that disrupts the otherwise earthy color palette.

Karnes exhibited at The Clay Studio in the early years of the organization, most notably in the 1983 exhibition "American Clay Artists." Originally known for her functional, wheel-thrown pieces, Karnes' work veered towards abstraction later in her career. Though more abstract in nature, this piece could be seen as a mid-way point for Karnes, representing a transitional period in her career.

The child of Russian and Polish Jewish immigrants, Karen Karnes (1925-2016) was born in New York City. Karnes studied art her entire life - after graduating from Brooklyn College in 1946 with a major in design, Karns traveled to Italy where she fell in love with ceramics and the potter's wheel. Karnes would go on to study at Black Mountain College with Josef Albers. Karnes later became a potter-in-residence at Black Mountain. In 1954, Karnes and her husband, David Weinrib, helped establish the Gate Hill Cooperative in Stony Point, New York, an experimental artists' colony and international community also known as The Land.

Robert Winokur - Vessel

This tall, handled stoneware vessel features a gorgeous array of green glazes, from the color of soft moss to a deeper verdant. Winokur's love of salt glaze is on full display here, with a mottled surface that Helen Drutt English described as "succulent." The form is hand-built in three sections Winokur left visible, each with its own unique combination of shapes, colors, and textures.

Born in Brooklyn, New York, Robert Winokur (1933-2020) received his BFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and his MFA from New York State College of Ceramics. In 1966, Winkour returned to Tyler, this time as professor of ceramics, and also department chair from 1988-1991. He retired in 2005 as professor emeritus.

Winokur's practice evolved over the years, with stylized house forms being a recurrent subject. He considered their physical and metaphorical space as vessels themselves. His life-long commitment to the vessel as both a functional and communicative form resulted in a body of work that evokes powerful emotions while retaining a sense of familiarity and comfort.

Robert and his wife Paula maintained a shared ceramics studio for more than 50 years-half being the porcelain or "light" side and the other the stoneware or "dark" side, according to Paula in a 2013 interview produced by the James A. Michener Art Museum. Their working relationship was a testament to shared creativity and support. The Clay Studio is honored to bring works from both Winokurs to auction for Mud Ball 2024.

Paula Winokur - Iceball

Five inches in diameter, this porcelain sphere is part of Paula Winokur's "Global Warnings" series. The predominantly smooth surface is disrupted by fissures and crags, evoking natural formations and the topography of the Earth. Like all of Winokur's work, this piece extols the beauty of porcelain, capturing its strength rather than its translucency. Beyond the material, it is an artwork that asks us to seriously consider the health of our planet and the devastating effects of climate change.

Paula Winokur (1936-2018) was a tour de force in the art world who spent a considerable portion of her career using art to draw attention to the climate crisis. Her primary focus was on porcelain, a material she admired for its contradictions. Encompassing at one time fragility and strength, delicacy and durability, the striking white color is a hallmark of her work, capable of evoking any number of landmarks or locations. As Winkour herself stated: "I have chosen to work with this clay because it has allowed me to explore issues in the landscape without making literal interpretations."

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Winokur attended Tyler School of Art where she studied under Rudolf Staffel. Winokur, together with her husband Robert, made a significant impact on the field of American ceramics and their name is as well-known and widely recognized as their works. The example Paula Winokur set for women artists cannot be understated and we are so thrilled to bring this piece to auction.

Kevin Snipes - Vessel

Kevin Snipes is an American artist born in Philadelphia and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He earned a BFA in ceramics and drawing from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1994 and concluded graduate studies at the University of Florida in 2003. Snipes combines techniques of narrative figure drawing, text, and hand-formed porcelain constructions to create objects that can be seen as multi-layered paintings. Considering himself a storyteller the narratives he explores are open-ended investigations of difference and otherness, capturing underlying emotional and psychological issues of discrimination. He is interested in what happens when people who are different come together. This manifests in a key aspect of his work which is the front of the piece having a depicted protagonist with the rest of the story unfolding behind them. His intricate way of visual storytelling encourages the viewer to dynamically engage with what's depicted in order to understand that there is a layer of social unease below the surface.

Mallory Wetherell - Small Favor

A former staff member at The Clay Studio, Mallory Wetherell's work explores gray areas by using emotional associations linked to anatomy. Mallory is originally from South Carolina, where she began her collegiate studies in the sciences with plans to study prosthetic design. While her focus shifted to the arts later in college, her interest in the sciences continues to influence her ceramic artwork. She has served as Gallery Coordinator at The Clay Studio of Philadelphia, and has been an artist-in-residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana. She has taught ceramics at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and is currently Associate Professor of Ceramics and Sculpture at University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Adrian Arleo - Bird Figure

An evocative, eerily beautiful work, this small work by well-known sculptor Adrian Arleo represents a frequent theme of hers, the human-animal hybrid. Adrian Arleo has spent the last 28 years living outside Missoula, Montana, with her family and a menagerie of animals. She works full time as a ceramic sculptor, and says the following about her work:

"For 40 years, my sculpture has combined human, animal and natural imagery to create a kind of emotional and poetic power. Often there's a suggestion of a vital interconnection between the human and non-human realms; the imagery arises from associations, concerns and obsessions that are at once intimate and universal. The work frequently references mythology and archetypes in addressing our vulnerability amid changing personal, environmental and political realities. By focussing on older, more mysterious ways of seeing the world, edges of consciousness and deeper levels of awareness suggest themselves."

Adrian studied Art and Anthropology at Pitzer College (B.A. 1983) and received her M.F.A. in ceramics from Rhode Island School of Design in 1986. She was an Artist in Residence at Oregon College of Art and Craft in 1986-87, at Sitka Center For Art and Ecology in 1987-88 and in 2012, was an invited artist for the Jordan Schnitzer Printmaking Residency, also at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology. Adrian's work is exhibited nationally and internationally, and is in numerous public and private collections. She received awards from the Virginia A. Groot Foundation in 1991 and 1992, and in 1995, was awarded a Montana Arts Council Individual Fellowship. Her work has been widely published in books, magazines, and on the internet. Adrian is a frequent workshop instructor across the US and abroad, and enjoys teaching courses on figurative ceramic sculpture.

Yih Wen Kuo - Eternal Home

Fusing architectural and natural imagery, this striking piece is part of the artist's "Eternal Home" series. Asymmetrical with a minimalist, squared form, this work features a black glaze that catches the light, revealing the textured surface. Yih-Wen's fanciful reimagining of a home features two entry-points or "windows" that belie its solidity and encourages the viewer to peer inside.

In an artist's statement written for his 2006 exhibition at The Clay Studio, Yih-Wen Kuo revealed that he writes on the inside of his slabs before closing the form, making the finished piece "space containers" that both conceal and embody his thoughts. "Like a diary, it recorded my happiness and sadness, love and hate, affection and hostility, motivation and passivity, involvement and loneliness, up and down, and dreams"

Born in Taiwan, Yih-Wen Kuo began his studies at the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan, where he received his Bachelor's degree. Upon completing his MFA study at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale in 1988, he became a Resident Artist at The Clay Studio under the Franklin Mint Fellowship. While his residency ended in 1990, Yih-Wen Kuo remained a champion of the Resident Artist Program. Many of his students, such as Andy Shaw, went on to become Residents themselves. Yih-Wen Kuo retired in 2021 with an Emeritus professorship from Northern Illinois University after 31 years of art teaching.

Andy Shaw - Large Vase

Roberto Lugo - Plate

For fans of nationally renowned, Philly-based artist Roberto Lugo, this ceramic plate is an excellent example of the artist's early work.

Made in the 2010s while the artist was still in school, this piece is a classic example of Lugo's intervention into the history of ceramics. The plate itself was manufactured by the Victoria Porcelain Factory sometime between 1891 - 1918. Lugo not only signed the work, inscribing his name on top of the manufacturer's stamp in a bold claim of authorship, but added a self-portrait of himself in a crown in the center. The portrait is surrounded by graffiti linework - arrows that guide the eye around the surface, rushing past letters and dynamic shapes that work both with and against the pattern of the dish.

A fusion of old and new, this piece represents an unlikely collaboration between one of the most notable ceramicists in the United States today and the largest porcelain factory in the late nineteenth century. This is a perfect example of Lugo's reimagining of traditional ceramics with a 21st-century street sensibility.

A frequent exhibitor and longtime friend of the organization, Roberto Lugo was a Guest Artist-in-Residence at The Clay Studio in the summer of 2016. Lugo is an American artist, ceramist, social activist, spoken word poet, and educator. He uses porcelain as his medium of choice, illuminating its aristocratic surface with imagery of poverty, inequality, and social and racial injustice. Lugo's works are multicultural mash-ups: traditional European and Asian porcelain forms and techniques reimagined with a 21st-century street sensibility. Their hand-painted surfaces feature classic decorative patterns and motifs combined with elements of modern graffiti and portraits of individuals whose faces are historically absent on this type of luxury item-people like Sojourner Truth, Dr. Cornel West, and the Notorious BIG, as well as Lugo's family members and, very often, himself. Lugo holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Penn State. He is the recipient of several awards, including a 2019 Pew Fellowship, a Cynthia Hazen Polsky and Leon Polsky Rome Prize, and a US Artist Award. His work has been featured in exhibitions and in the permanent collections of major museums such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art,the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York, among others, and belongs in numerous institutional collections.

Soojin Choi (b.1991) was born and raised in South Korea, and she has worked as an artist in the United States since 2010. She earned her BFA at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2015 with a double major in Craft/ Material Studies and Painting/ Printmaking. She continued her studies at Alfred University to pursue a MFA degree in ceramics in 2018. Her work transforms objects, figures and spaces into visual language by repeatedly layering flat and spatial surfaces.

She attempts to express the ambiguity of emotion through flat and spatial surfaces; subtle facial expression, gaze and body gesture; as well as color and brush expressions. Building the surfaces with clay allows her to seamlessly weave between dimensions and textures to articulate feelings of ambivalence.

Ruth Easterbrook was born in Redwood Valley, California growing up with the hills as her playground. She graduated from Syracuse University with a BFA in ceramics in 2007. In 2014 she began focusing on her career starting with a spring concentration class at Penland School of Craft (NC) and then spending extended time at Anderson Ranch Arts Center (CO) In 2019 Ruth earned her MFA in ceramics at Alfred University. Ruth aims for her pottery to be an active participant in the coming together of people, sharing, and the enjoyment of food. She designs her works with their primary functionality in mind using a range of techniques for each piece, from hand building and throwing on the wheel to mapping out her floral motifs with glazes to create surfaces with textures movement.

Rebekah Wostrel - White Wedge

Rebekah has taught courses at Harvard, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania, and has exhibited her work at museums and galleries throughout the world. She now works in her studio at the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she teaches clay and design classes for kids and adults. She has been teaching studio art classes and online art appreciation at Piedmont Virginia Community College since 2005.

Linda Cordell - Double Dog

These three colorful earthenware figures from Merrie Wright are part of a larger installation called "In Passing." The small, stylized figures have a marbled surface that combines off-white with vivid greens and blues. Their faces, clothes, and hairstyles are sculpted with minimal detail, at one time universal and individual.

"In Passing" was one of many works Wright created for her Master's Thesis at Louisiana State University. The project saw Wright exploring themes of transition as life moves from adolescence into adulthood, "the loss of naivetè, accumulation of experiences and memories, and the release of memory necessary to move on to new experiences…" Solemn without being somber, these pieces exist as a means to project our personal experiences white celebrating a shared humanity.

Merrie Wright received her BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and her MFA from Louisiana State University. She currently lives in East Texas and is Professor and Chair of the Department of Art & Art History at the University of Texas at Tyler. Donnelly was a resident at The Clay Studio from 2001 - 2006, along with his wife, Rain Harris. Donnelly and Harris are founders of the Kansas City Urban Potters in Kansas City, Missouri where they still live and work to this day.

Currently an Associate Professor of Ceramics at the Kansas City Art Institute working with students in the vessel concentration, Donnelly received his BFA from Edinboro University in 1997 and his MFA from the NYSCC at Alfred University in 2008. He has participated in residency programs at The Clay Studio, The Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China and Watershed Center in Newcastle, ME. He has exhibited both nationally and internationally and has been published in numerous books & periodicals.

Yeh Rim Lee - Money Chair

The series was begun for The Clay Studio exhibition "From Storage to Studio." Not only did Lee modernize the form, she elevated its sculptural qualities without sacrificing functionality. The artist described her Money Chairs as possessing "a modern sense of abundance through elaborate shape, dripping glaze, sheens, and functionality that is questioned by extravagant form."

YehRim Lee was born in Seoul, Korea. She earned her BFA from Korea National University of Cultural Heritage (2013). She received her MFA in Ceramic Art at Alfred University (2017). She has shown in exhibitions nationally and internationally. Lee was a Resident Artist at The Clay Studio from 2017 - 2020. She now lives and works in Joshua Tree, California.

Jinsik Yoo - Figure

This figure by resident artist Jinsik Yoo takes on a cowboy like form with an eye-catching metallic royal blue glaze. Yoo has a special talent for transforming flat slabs of clay into evocative figures with just a few cuts and twists. In its abstracted nature this figure allows viewers to envision different characters and forms allowing for further exploration. Jinsik Yoo is a figurative ceramic sculpture from Daejon, South Korea. He received his BFA in graphic design from Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea. Yoo moved to the United States in 2017 to pursue his MFA at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. His studio practice involves translating photographs into paintings, which are then spliced and reassembled into three dimensional forms. Through the mash up of 2-D and 3-D work he explores issues relative to his life, including gender binaries, and how memory affects our perception, and conscious decision making. His interest lies in using symbols to communicate, as the message is disguised through another language only those that know could understand.

Chris Gustin - Yunomi

Many artists have explored the cup or yunomi form, working to create functional pieces with the same communicative power, the same emotional pull, as other sculptural forms. With thousands of years of tradition behind the yunomi form, Gustin continues to create masterful example of function and beauty such as this beautiful burnt-orange cup alive with yellows, reds, and warm browns.

Known for his wood and soda-fired works such as this, Gustin has shown work at The Clay Studio beginning in the 1990s. Each of his functional pieces are alive with explorations and experiments in glaze, meant to inspire memories with each encounter. Tea bowls and cups have been an important body of intimate functional work for Gustin since 1977.

Born in Chicago, Gustin has been surrounded by ceramics for the majority of his life. Gustin holds a BFA in ceramics from Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Gustin served as the head of ceramics at Swain School of Design in New Bedford, Massachusetts (now the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth) and is a founding member of Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine.

Linda Sikora (b. 1960) is a ceramic artist who hails from Canada and currently lives in Alfred Station, NY, where she teaches at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University. Her porcelain jars and teapots are known for their incredible form and polychrome surfaces. Sikora states, "Jars and teapots are at the front edge of my recent inquiry. The teapot, more demanding of specific engineering particular to its function, and the jar, a generous canvas, its criteria of containment more permissive. How I imagine, and make, and reflect on each piece shapes the atmosphere it generates and influences how it becomes positioned in cultural space. I am interested in pottery form for its familiarity and congeniality; its ability to disappear into private/personal activities and places. But, this is only one aspect of the work which, through its intelligence of color, form and stance can also excite/awaken attention and thereby reflect back to the viewer their own imagination. Invisible or visible, or oscillating back and forth between these states, the pots foster both attention and inattention. They are insistently existent, and continuously stir."

Sikora received her diploma of Fine Arts from David Thompson University Center, Nelson, British Columbia and holds a B.F.A. from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, Halifax. She also received her M.F.A. from the University of Minnesota. Sikora's work can be found in numerous collections, among them the Arkansas Arts Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and the Northern Clay Center.

Rudolf Staffel - Light Vessel

Beloved in the Philadelphia craft art world, Rudi Staffel was also known worldwide as the first Studio Potter to highlight the magic of porcelain's translucency in his sculptural vessels. This stunning example is sure to add brilliance to your home and your art collection.

On its own, the porcelain has the fragile beauty one might expect, its surface animated with lines, ridges, divots, and bumps. The rim flares out slightly, almost mimicking a flower in bloom. Staffel's "Light Gatherers" have walls of varying thickness, since, he declares: "To be aware of translucency, you must have opaqueness. ... It's the contrast in the body of the pot, between thick and thin, that gives the sensation of translucency." Thrown vessels are pinched by fingers or scored with sharp instruments, while the more sculptural, hand-built forms are often layered with pieces of clay to vary the transmittal of light.

Born in San Antonio, Texas, Rudolf Staffel (1911-2002) is internationally known for his revolutionary work in porcelain. Staffel created vessels that emphasize the elusive physical characteristics of the material: its ability to reflect and gather light as well as its translucency and plasticity. His exploration of these qualities resulted in work that is as stunning as it is singular. His first interest in art was Chinese and Japanese brushwork, which he discovered as a teenager. He briefly studied painting and glassblowing; it was not until the 1950s that he began working with porcelain, the medium that would serve as his muse for the rest of his career. Staffel was on the faculty of the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia for 38 years and retired as a professor emeritus. The Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, are among the institutions that have collections of his work. Rudolf Staffel received the American Craft Council's Gold Medal in 1995.

Minah Kim - Sokuri Basket

5.5" H x 12.25" D

This gorgeous bowl form from Resident Artist Minah Kim is a staple of the artist's current practice. This form is a redescription of domestic basket sokuri that were widely used in traditional Korean households and markets to contain fruits and vegetables. It is a round and concave basket originally made from bush clover or bamboo. Kim's bowl is a functional sculpture, evoking and honoring Korean traditions.

Minah Kim is from South Korea where she received her BFA and MFA at Ewha Womans University. She has recently completed her MFA at the University of Arkansas. She is a recipient of numerous grants and fellowships including NCECA (National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts) Multicultural Fellowship and Artist 360 by MAAA(Mid America Arts Alliance). Minah is a panelist of NWSA (National Women's Studies Association) and AAPI heritage discussion group of Northwest Arkansas. She was also MASS MoCA resident artist in winter 2021. Her work simultaneously communicates physical gestures of the process of working and thinking about internalized memories. Existing between the space of certainty and uncertainty, she explores works that activate encountered moments and actualize these nuances by creating and arranging a dialogue within the work.

Adelaide Paul experimented in their time at The Clay Studio with "upscaling" pre-made forms. This butter dish is a prime example of that process. Paul received her BFA from the New York State College of Ceramics in 1993 and her MFA from Louisiana State University in 1996. She is a passionate animal rights activist and spent nine years between high school and her college education working with horses. Her five dogs and two cats, all rescued from various shelters, are a huge part of her life. Her relationships with and love for animals have profoundly impacted all aspects of her work.

Enjoy this work from Pennsylvania artist Royce Yoder. Royce opened his studio in 1983 in Lederach, Pennsylvania. His extensive line of functional pottery includes bowls, mugs, cream and sugar sets, handled plates, soup tureens, canister sets, dinnerware, pitchers, vases, candle holders and more.

This piece - a spouted jar - is a form that Royce has perfected in his years of working. In a green and tan glaze pattern, this piece will easily find a place in your home. Included with this raffle are a selection of oil and vinegar to store in this jar. Like all of Royce's work, this piece is microwave and dishwasher safe and lead free.

Born in Kansas in 1954, Royce became interested in pottery during college when he took a ceramics class because it looked like "fun". This class jump started his career as a potter and he officially began making pots for a living in 1978. Royce and his wife Marci moved to Pennsylvania in the late 1970's and Royce established his studio in Lederach in 1983. After over 40 years of creating a living for himself by throwing clay, Royce is still passionate about creating, playing, and shaping new objects out of clay.

Mimi Logothetis earned her degree from the Temple University Tyler School of Art. Working primarily in porcelain, Logothetis uses symbolic imagery to create a story, joke, or surreal visual landscape. Her hand built work is constructed to show process: seams, glue, rivets, etc. or to resemble paper, speaking to the nature of preciousness and permanence versus fragility and disposability.

Steve Hilton started his career as a teacher with a degree in Geology. At 40 he received his Master's Degree in Ceramics, and his love of geology stayed with him. His tiny teapot is a reflection of his love of the process of ceramics and the earth. This tiny wonder is meticulously crafted and reminds us of the earth from which the clay was dug. If you are a fan of our popular Small Favors Show, this piece will fit right into your collection.

Steve Hilton finished his MFA in Ceramics at Arizona State University in 2005. He also holds an MS in Art Education, and a BS in Geology from Missouri State University. Steve has taught science and art at the secondary level, and 3-D design, ceramics and art education at the post-secondary levels. In the past 18 years, his work has been placed into the permanent collections of museums, universities and individuals in the United States, Slovenia, Thailand, Australia, Austria, Portugal, China, Japan, Canada, Italy, Germany, Romania and Cuba. During the same timeframe, he has been juried into numerous international and national exhibitions in conjunction with curated solo shows in the United States. Steve currently is the Fain Professor of ceramics and art education at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, TX, is a Fellow of the Council of NCECA (The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Art), and is a member of the IAC (The International Academy of Ceramics).

Take home some of the talent and beauty that fills The Clay Studio's shop with seven cups or mugs by some of our community's favorite artists. There is one for each day of the week, but it is okay to have a favorite!

Works by:

Claire Shenk Rodgers has been working in clay and teaching ceramics for over 30 years. Claire came to Philadelphia, PA as a resident artist at The Clay Studio in 1976; and continued her involvement there as an Associate Artist, exhibiting artist and board member. Her forms draw together an attraction for the volume inside the work, a painterly surface, and edge design and flow.

Nathan Willever holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Maine College of Art. Willever designs works for everyday use and is inspired by folk pottery traditions across the world. He tries to capture the wonderful energy that he's identities within with German, Korean, early American pots. He believes his works are complete when they are in service, bringing a sense of human connection to the user.

Influenced heavily by the architecture of her surroundings, Roberta Massuch creates functional pottery, sculpture, and works on paper. Massuch received her BFA in ceramics from Northern Illinois University and her MFA from Louisiana State University. Massuch's practice involves three separate, yet completely intertwined ways of working: ceramic sculpture, functional pottery and drawing.

Naimah Stith I have been making pottery for 25 years and teaching for over 20 years. I am acutely aware of the rim and the foot and the handle and the surface to create a unique object that lives with you every day. Utilitarian art makes me look at the form as an ergonomic object that needs to be solved for every hand. I agonize over each part of creating and find that the process of making is greatly fulfilling and frustrating. Each day brings new understanding.

Sara Gallo is an ceramic artist, she attended University of the Arts and graduated with a BFA in painting in 1997, and subsequently earned her MFA in ceramics from The Ohio State University in 2010. Gallo's abstract lettering and glazing techniques allow you to find something new within the design each time you engage with it.

Katherine Hackl established her ceramic studio in 1994, producing traditionally handcrafted pottery and tile. Her techniques and designs draw on the Arts and Crafts traditions of studio pottery. Her distinctive pottery is a collection of hand-thrown functional stoneware and porcelain forms decorated with a variety of freehand techniques. Her work brings nature indoors with images of meadows, trees, birds and berries among many other themes.

Functional pottery is Paul Eshelman's cultural attempt, through the material of clay, to bring order and human dignity to the merely physical act of consuming food and drink. As his pots are used daily, Paul's hope is that they carry measures of quiet and nourishment for body and spirit. Eshelman received a B.A. in art from the University of Puget Sound and an M.F.A. in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design.
