This is the ADORABLE Cappy. This oversized puppy with a little pink nose came to us injured. He never stopped wiggling despite his broken elbow AND broken jaw!! We didn't know what happened to him, but we were leaning toward being hit by a car. What a sweet little angel baby. We were so glad he was safe with us.

Due to his stocky build and it being a front leg, amputation would not have been a good option for him. We knew he was going to have to go through major surgery, but we believed we could save his leg.

Our sweet Cappy made it through that surgery wonderfully and as of January 2023, he was medically cleared!

With all four legs, Cappy has been adopted and now struts his stuff alongside his forever family.

This guy is in foster and has been learning the ABCs of "dogging". He is doing great!

Meet Pants. Yep. His name is Pants. This little guy was abandoned in one of our outside play yards after hours. On top of that, he had a huge gash on his head! We will never know how he got that wound, but it's safe to say it wasn't good.

While here at the shelter, this little man packed a BIG personality; but with a face and body like that, how could he not?

We are happy to report that Pants has officially found the missing pieces in his wardrobe. Pants found his forever family and has been adopted!

Originally, Summertime came to us last December with his siblings. The ittiest bittiest pups. We named them the "Kenny Chesney" litter...after some of his best hits. His beloved pet, Ruby, "Da Ruba girl", had just passed away and he graciously donated all of the proceeds from his song dedicated to her to STRAY RESCUE!

Summertime was recently returned due to no fault of his own. But he came here ready to party and was PERFECT! It didn't take long for this guy to get adopted - Summertime is back in action!

We received a call that a dog was spotted living in the backyard of a dilapidated home. Through the fence, the good Samaritan could see his sad eyes and that he was in bad shape. We knew we had to rescue this guy from a life no one deserves.

Butler quickly went to foster where his skin issues were cleared up and he started an amazing training program designed to help him thrive in an adoptive home. He continues to excel and will find his forever family soon!

Forklift was rescued last summer. This rescue needed something kind of crazy. You probably already guessed - a Forklift! This little guy was heard mewing away down in a sewer at a trash facility. Donna said without that forklift, we would have never been able to get him! Covered in oil but otherwise okay, Forklift quickly went to foster and has since been adopted!

Avalanche was dangerously skinny, and his hips were covered in deep sores from sitting on concrete for so long. To help, the veterinary team prescribed Avalanche some antibiotics and put him on a re-feeding schedule so that he could start gaining weight at a healthy pace.

Avalanche only spent a few days at the veterinary clinic before finding a loving foster family to take him in. His caregivers at the clinic had fallen in love with him and were sad to see him go, but they were so happy that Avalanche would get to finally know the feeling of a full belly and warm bed. Mostly they were happy he would finally know love."

Avalanche has been adopted and looks like a totally different dog. He is happy, healthy, and LOVED!

In Memory of the Adored IQ

2012-2023

IQ came to us in March 2018. Neighbors reported that her family moved out around thanksgiving of 2017 and left her behind.

Over the years her adoptions, unfortunately, hadn't worked out. Understandably so, being abandoned like that leaves permanent scars. However, she continued to be a staff favorite and loved being everyone's little cutie pie.

IQ was diagnosed with a terminal cancer early this year. Knowing her time was limited, the staff was determined to find her a comfy cozy home where she could be loved on day and night. One of her very favorite people found that very special person. IQ went home just months before passing.

IQ was adored by all and won't be forgotten.

We rescued Epic on New Year's Day this year from one of the WORST houses we have ever been in...and that is saying something! He somehow, some way, got to the top floor of a house that was not only crumbling but there wasn't even enough floor left for us to get to him. With the help of the whole neighborhood, we climbed in through a window on a ladder and lowered him down.

Epic has begun an epic life as an adopted baby boy! Now THAT is EPIC!

And what we saw when we pulled up was nothing short of heartbreaking. He was all alone with his belongings. He sat up straight when we pulled up like"....are you here to help me?"
Yes, we were, you big handsome sweetheart. "Come on, you have a home now."

We named him Tricky Ricky and he was PERFECT at the shelter.

Meet Georgia!! This sweet southern belle came to us all the way from Louisiana. She had a rough life as an outdoor dog before coming to Stray Rescue. However, thanks to her patient and loving foster, she acclimated to indoor life and learned how to "dog". Another hurdle was heartworms, but she's gone through treatment and came through like a champ.

Georgia has been adopted and we are happy to report that she's doing great!

This sweet little baby is Peppermint Bark! She was rescued in December after her mom had been given away and the puppies were left to fend for themselves.

She was fearful of people and had no adult dogs to show her the ropes. Once safe in her foster home, it took her a couple of days to warm up to the other dogs. But then she started following them around, playing, and even figured out how to play with toys!

Donna (our resident rescuer) was her foster mom and actually started taking her to work so she could learn that people are nice and fun, too. We are happy to announce Peppermint found her forever family and is acclimating well!

Meet Tofu. She came to us with a fishing hook inside of her! How or why she ate it, we're unsure. All we knew is we had to give her a chance, she's just 5 months old and pretty much a unicorn of a dog, she's perfect.

We said our prayers and sent her in for a specialty emergency surgery. But we are SO HAPPY to tell you they did not need to open her up! They actually used a tool called an endoscope (which is like a long tube with a camera on the end and a hole on the side so they can fit different attachments) to go in naturally through her mouth. The hook was lodged in her esophagus so they very carefully were able to pull it out and extract it. There was no perforation. What a miracle!

Tofu has fully recovered and has been adopted!

Cuban came to Stray Rescue with a lot of health problems. He had very serious feline diabetes and it took months to regulate his levels. That in tandem with his other medical issues was hard on Cuban. He became very close with the vet staff and our Chief Operations Officer, Kiarra.

Eventually, he was brought to live in Kiarra's office so he could have room to stretch and play. He even got a roommate, a shy cat named Squatter. They were instantly attached and seeing their daily cuddle puddles warmed everyone's hearts.

At the beginning of 2023, his health took a turn for the worse. Keeping quality of life at the forefront, the vet staff and Kiarra made the difficult decision to let Cuban cross the rainbow bridge.

Though heartbreaking, knowing he was free from his pain provided some comfort. The vet staff and Kiarra gave Cuban the happiest days of his life. "Roam free you perfect, perfect boy."

We received a call that this poor baby was trying to give birth in a vacant lot. But according to neighbors on the scene, she had been trying all day with no luck. We knew immediately she was having complications and needed emergency help. We rushed her to our emergency vet clinic and after seeing one large, stuck puppy on an X-ray, we had to prepare her for an emergency. After a complicated, serious surgery, we all kept our fingers crossed she would make it out of the woods. Although her pups didn't make it. Panchita did.

We are happy to say - this girl is adopted! She is so thankful to her foster family who took her in, let her heal at their house in peace and quiet, and get all the rest she needed. They healed her heart and her soul. And now she's a furry daughter, ready to see what life has in store!!

You've seen her climb in sewers, under crumbling houses, and in deep, dark, creepy places to save animals. But have you seen Donna climb under a jacked car?

Last summer we received a call from a good Samaritan that a group of people at work had been hearing this kitten cry since 5 am that morning in an abandoned car. As the temperature grew hotter and hotter, they grew more and more worried when they could only hear her distressed cries and could never see her. They helped us jack the car up so we could get the kitten to safety. She was covered in motor oil so she got a bath the moment she arrived at Stray Rescue.

Hydraulic recovered wonderfully and has been adopted! THAT was a close one.

Stevie Nicks is a beautiful dog still looking for someone special. She is a survivor. She had been shot in the head and was emaciated when she first arrived - just 28 lbs. She still has some bullet fragments lodged behind her ear. She also survived distemper during the outbreak. She does have some brain damage from the shot, but she doesn't let that get in the way!

Meet adorable, delightful Pershing.
When we met her, she was covered in mud with puppies and on a chain. Her entire body wiggled, from the tip of her toes to her tail. A FULL BODY wiggle. From our Licking Mo rescue, This little girl is so very special. We found out that she is not only blind but diabetic as well. We knew it would take a special foster to take these conditions on.

Pershing found that special foster and she has been thriving since. We are so happy for Pershing!

Remo was transported from a rural area to us. He was badly injured and needed another chance at life. He was shot in the back leg and suffered for 2 weeks with no medical attention. We also were informed in his 2 years of living he was shot with a bow and arrow and been hit by 2 cars. He had to have an emergency leg amputation. Remo recovered nicely and has the most loving family now!

Heart & Soul's story captured and broke the hearts of people all over the world. Heart was rescued by Stray Rescue of St. Louis after she and her friend Soul were found on the side of the highway. Soul had been hit by a car and Heart was standing over him to protect him. She wouldn't leave her friends side. Once in the rescue Jeep she kept an eye on him the whole ride back to the shelter. Unfortunately Soul's injuries were too severe and he couldn't be saved. Heart laid her head on his chest as he took his last breath. It was gut-wrenching. There was not a dry eye in the building.

After grieving the loss of her friend, Heart was ready for her forever home. While here at the shelter, Heart was an amazing girl who loved everyone she met. We knew anyone who adopted her would have a loyal friend for life.

Heart has officially been adopted! She even brought Soul along with her to her new home. She has a trinket attached to her collar that has Soul's ashes in it.

We were heading to Stray Rescue with another injured dog when we spotted this emaciated girl dart down another street. "Turn the jeep around!"

We followed her to this abandoned building. Again, the floors were dangerous to walk on and we weren't sure they would hold our weight. Wide-eyed, hips and spine protruding, she eagerly scarfed our Vienna sausages. It was at that moment she decided..."Heck yeah, I'm coming with you!!"

Dodie knew she wanted to be loved and let us layer that love on every day. One treat and kiss at a time. She recuperated in an amazing foster home and has been adopted. She really is the sweetest gift!

Last year, this little beagle came to us sooo skinny. His paws were open and infected, he had gaping wounds, and bone was exposed. We will spare you the before photos. His wounds smelled horrible when he came in, so he went directly into emergency care.

Gerald went through a lot during his journey to recovery. He had to have a leg amputated and was diagnosed as fecally incontinent.

You would never know it, though. After recovery, he came to live upstairs in a staff member's office. He made so many furry friends and got to go to play groups daily, where he romped hard with the best of 'em.

Even though he was perfection, we knew finding a family willing to manage his special needs might be tough, but miracles happen here every day. Gerald was adopted by an incredible family that fell in love with him, unconditionally. Not a dry eye in the house that day.

Recently, Gerald crossed the rainbow bridge. Although this news saddened us deeply, we found the beauty in him being with his forever family, enveloped in love, and finally home.

Meet the Washington University Police Department's newest recruits: Bear & Brookie! This brother/sister duo are WUPD's FIRST Therapy Dogs. Class of 2023! Officially graduated, students have been seeing lots of them around campus with their Field Training Officers. These sweet pups were discarded but now have a home AND job at Washington University! Meet Charlie. He was found in a ditch with large, open, gaping wounds full of maggots all over. A good Samaritan found him and did not keep driving. He pulled over and loaded him in his car, not knowing what the next step would be. Once he made it to us, we knew he needed immediate, emergency care.

We were thrilled when he made it through the first night. We knew he had a fighting chance. And Charlie is a FIGHTER. Day by day he gets a little better. With every bandage change, we know he feels hope. With every pet, he heals. His eyes show us that everything is going to be okay.

Charlie is officially cleared for a medical foster. One step closer to finding his forever family. We cannot wait to see the places he will go. Charlie is going to make that family so very happy!

This handsome boy is Phantom. He was found running around super scared. We had to set a trap to catch him. He was terrified. Little did he know his life was about to change. When he was brought to us, he was showered with love. He went to a foster home to work on socialization and manners. He caught on quickly and learned that humans aren't so bad. He was able to find his forever home and is doing great now!

Everyone meet Crash! He is the SWEETEST, most lovable boy! He came to us in HORRIBLE condition with a broken jaw & is covered in scars. God only knows what this poor boy has been through in his long life. There are no other signs of him being shot or hit by a car so they are thinking some sort of blunt force trauma broke his jaw.

Currently, he is mending here at the shelter. We are hoping he will go to foster soon!

Meet Flapper: We aren't sure what happened to Flapper before us; something had gotten a hold of this poor kitty, but he was brave and strong, and he survived! It was a long healing journey for Flap. He tested positive for FIV and FELV. So he needed a special medical foster... that didn't have other cats. Our foster team worked their magic and found his current foster family. He is now ready for adoption.

This one is hard to read, so take a deep breath.

Meet Power Puff. This little girl, just 47 pounds and about 5 years old, has seen hell. She was a bait dog. She came to us shredded by other dogs. Her teeth were filed, and her canines were extracted. She was in the wrong hands like so many sweet dogs sadly are. Because there are too many dogs, not enough families, and no laws to help them.

When she came to Stray Rescue, she was so scared. Being in a shelter surrounded by dogs was a nightmare for her. She would shake and couldn't ever relax. Then we x-rayed her. Our hearts sank when we discovered she was very pregnant. So in addition to everything she had endured, she was also being used for puppies. This dog was betrayed by humankind in the worst way, and it breaks our hearts to think what these people would do with them. She gave birth to two beautiful little puppies, and thankfully they are the last litter she will ever have. Her babies will not grow up to have babies, either. They will be fixed prior to their adoption.
Power Puff is gentle and kind. She really likes being around people and is thriving in her AMAZING foster home.

Power Puff is finally safe.

Artist Statement: I am an animal lover who grew up in the St. Louis Metro-East area. Although I live in Los Angeles, California, I have a great fondness for the area and visit family and friends every year.

I like to work in thin layers of acrylic and sometimes add charcoal/pastel markings. I spray-finish the canvas pieces, giving them a light sheen.
I want people to see my work, smile and feel a tug at the heartstrings. These sweet animals and the people who help them make my job easy.

Meet the one and only Annie McHound! Last year, we received a call from some very concerned folks who said they woke up to find this sweet girl in their backyard.

Of course, Donna was in the jeep in five seconds and headed their way. Annie was ready to go Bye-Bye!

Once we had her, we realized how emaciated she was, to the point that she didn't even have the strength to stand on her own. She was being eaten alive by fleas and was utterly anemic. Annie was dying. There was not one minute to spare as we began the work of trying to save her life. Annie received an emergency blood transfusion and needed constant oxygen and heat support for weeks. She slowly began to heal and gain weight - she even became super playful while still here at the shelter. We were so grateful to have been a part of this healing journey.

Fast Forward: Annie Mchound has been adopted. You would hardly recognize her today. She has fully recovered, she is happy, and she is HOME."

We received a call about an abandoned, horribly skinny Doberman. We had to help...

Meet Albus. We all fell in love immediately.

The poor guy was in horrible shape. We were hoping it wasn't cancer, but we ran all the tests to see what he needed. He had a big, open tumor, upper respiratory, and no appetite. We were so thankful for the kind humans who helped us find him! He was so ready to go"

It didn't take Albus long to realize we were some of the good ones. He opened up and started to let a light in. Every day was better than the last...

As soon as Albus was cleared for a medical foster, one of our FANTASTIC fosters stepped up and took him home.

After many vet appointments and tests: We believe he is no longer considered hospice. He's eating so well and slowly but surely gaining weight.

LATEST UPDATE: Albus is beautiful and magnificent! He looks like a Doberman now, slender with no ribs showing. His appetite is great and he is getting more comfortable with touch. He's always been affectionate, but he didn't like to be touched in some places. He is learning new things every day even though he's so excited and is distracted easily. He doesn't want to miss a thing! He still has to go through heartworm treatment.

He is on his way and we couldn't be more thrilled!

Meet Owen, our perfect Owen.

When we first met him, he came to us full of so many bbs we couldn't even count them on his x-ray. He was shot so many times near his spine that he is now paralyzed in his rear legs. The saddest part is that he is the kindest, most gentle soul. It was a disgusting act of senseless violence.

Heather is a Vet Tech here at Stray Rescue. Her first day was the day Owen came in. She had been a daily part of his healing journey, watching his personality BLOSSOM and being on the receiving end of so many cuddles and grateful smooches along the way.

So in true Stray rescue fashion- she took him home. As soon as they got there, they took their first stroller ride around the neighborhood. This guy knows how lucky he is, he's grateful for every moment. What a gift he is.

We found this sweet boy running in a cemetery with what we thought was a broken leg. He was hanging out next to the Nickerson gravesite, so that's what we named him. Turns out his leg wasn't broken, he actually had brachial plexus avulsion (which means the nerves are stretched or torn leaving him with leg paralysis). He had to have that leg amputated. Although it took some time, Nickerson recovered beautifully and has officially been adopted. Way to go, Nickers!

Ham Sandwich came to us after being hit by a car. He sustained a severe pelvic fracture and had neurological deficits that affected his rear legs, so he was unable to urinate. Initially, we were having to keep in a urinary catheter (which is hard to maintain), or he had to be sedated to express his bladder. Neither of these options would give him a happy and full life, so euthanasia was sadly also discussed as an option. What was best for this little soul? But what made that conversation so difficult was that sweet little kitty was playing, purring, and cuddling. He was happy and he WANTED to live. He did not want to give up. So, we weren't going to, either.

Our incredibly talented and compassionate veterinarian, Dr. Schulz, had a different idea. She adored this cat and poured so much love and effort into him, she couldn't see giving up on him now. So she performed a procedure called a "perineal urethrostomy" to shorten the urethra. When swelling goes down, he would potentially be able to urinate on his own!

We are thrilled to tell you the surgery was a success! He uses the litter box with no issues, and you would never know what an ordeal he had been through. He told us he wanted to live, and what a life he has now!

This is Tardy! This kitten is soooo sweet and cuddly! She's also very lucky and grateful. She was rescued from a sewer filling with water on a stormy day. The sewer was so deep and water was filling quickly, so Donna had to think fast. She didn't have time to run back to the shelter to get the supplies she needed, so she emptied a food bag, attached it to a long leash, and lowered it down, hoping the kitten would feel hungry and curious enough to go in. When she did, the hope was that the leash would hold the bag long enough to pull it up. Well, the rescue gods were there that day, because it worked, and the kitten was able to be saved!!

Tardy, tardy for the party? No way! This girl is adopted and has been movin' & groovin' since!

The call came in at the end of the workday. A truck driver stopped in a park to take a break when he saw a little brown puppy in a tub on top of a trash can. He had to get back on the road so he called us and we headed over to get the little guy.

But when we got there, the sun had set and the park was pitch black. We found the tub on top of the trash can, but the puppy was gone. Did someone grab the puppy in the short time it took us to get here? Did he jump out and run? Did someone lift him out of the tub, set him "free," and leave? This was an extremely frustrating situation to be in. Donna got the FLIR camera out of the rescue Jeep. She powered it on and used it as her eyes as she scoured the area of the park he was originally in. And lo and behold, deep in the leaves, a little soul showed up on the screen. She climbed in with her flashlight and still almost didn't see him, he blended right in with his surroundings. But she saw his little eyes look up and was able to rescue him.

As soon as she picked him up, she knew something was wrong. He wasn't a healthy puppy. In fact, he was very sick and needed help. He immediately tested positive for parvovirus, a common yet very deadly disease puppies can get when they are not vaccinated. He was lethargic, vomiting, and had a high fever, with absolutely no appetite. It was a scary several days.

Donna and the staff fought for him until he could fight for himself.

Flir made a complete recovery and has been adopted. Happiest beginnings, pretty boy!

Buble came to us with a badly broken leg, but our amazing clinic was able to save it! We affectionally called him a 'Disney dog' because he was absolutely beautiful and sweet!

He was just so sick of living in the clinic and was ready to be finished healing already! We desperately wanted him to be able to heal in a home, but with such physical restrictions, we were nervous.

In true Disney style, this guy's luck was about to change yet again...an amazing family stepped up and took him to foster. They assured him he would find his forever family, but he just hadn't met them, yet.

Well, Buble got his happily ever after has been adopted! Now that's magic, baby.

Bark Twain came to us in February by a very nice lady who found him roaming in Forest Park. She didn't know what to do but she knew Stray Rescue would be the ones to help. When Bark Twain got to the shelter he was so shut down and afraid. But after just a few weeks of TLC, he's like a whole different dog. He's happy, healthy, and confident. He loves to play with his friends in the yard. And just look at his catching skills! He's such a good, good boy. He will be adopted in no time!

Jim was rescued from another shelter and had a rectal prolapse. Our incredible vet was able to help fix the prolapse. During his recovery, an extra wonderful volunteer stepped up to foster him. Jimothy needed that special touch and that super duper foster knew they had just what he needed.

This volunteer/foster extraordinaire failed in the best way possible and adopted Jimothy. Baby boy is doing great!

This is Prom, who was rescued after a Good Samaritan saw her run into the street and get hit by a car. Thankfully, she had no injuries, she was just terrified and maybe stunned.
But for Prom, she knew she instantly knew was safe. She was a happy-go-lucky wild woman in the yard from DAY 1, soaking up the sun, and the love we had to give.

Prom has been adopted - still dancing and still as happy as can be!

We rescued Gallery in November of last year. She was visibly pregnant and we knew we couldn't let her give birth on the streets. It was FREEZING. So after we got her bundled up and thawed out, we did x-rays. Sure enough, she was projected to have her babies within a week! Good timing, Donna.

An amazing family and huge supporter of ours took Gallery home to foster so she could have her babies in peace and quiet. Five puppies later and she will *officially* NEVER give birth again!

The sweetest part of all is that AMAZING family that fostered her - ADOPTED her!

AND they continue to foster moms and pups for us!

This is the lovely Princess Rosie. The name says it all! She came to us with one broken front leg and both legs shattered by bullets - and - to make matters worse, she was full of milk. Since she was brought in as an emergency, we didn't have the faintest idea where her puppies went. We were told that they had all been sold. It's horrible to think about.

Princess Rosie recovered in the clinic with BOTH front legs in casts for MONTHS. And she did so with grace. She became a fast favorite with our clinic staff. Once she was medically cleared, she joined the general population here at the shelter. That's when we got to see this girl's true personality...She loved the freedom and all the new faces.

A true happy beginning, Princess Rosie was adopted just days before Christmas. We are so happy our SURVIVOR got the ultimate gift - a forever family to call her own!

Arkansas Dave has the biggest heart! He gets along with every dog he meets and loves to wrestle with them! He is the perfect combination of protective and friendly. He is still a young, silly, clumsy guy.

Kamper came to us as a stray during the summer of 2022. He had a HORRIBLE skin condition but has since recovered beautifully. He was such a happy pup, even in such discomfort. One of our incredible fosters opened up their home to help him recover. He left her care being healthy and more handsome than ever.

Kamper found his forever home with SR Family and is forever grateful for them - and so are we!

"We aren't sure what Arlette went through before us, but we are sure it wasn't good.

We kept seeing a female dog hanging out in the same neighborhood. It was apparent she was helpless against the neighboring male dogs and was forced into having litter after litter. Donna noted what can only be described as a dead look in her eye. That is a look we know well here. And it is heartbreaking.

It took some time and patience, but Donna was eventually able to rescue this sweet girl.

To our surprise, it didn't take long for Arlette to open up and start trusting humans. She showered us with grateful affection. Confirming yet again, we don't deserve dogs."

Arlette has been adopted by an amazing family where she continues to thrive.

"We named her Little Toes because her little toes were so cold.

According to the caller, she had been lying in this pile of trash, and he thought she was injured. She was out in the cold and sleet for we don't know how many nights. Although she shook when we approached, she dug deep and mustered the greatest courage. Not only was she so grateful to be warm, but she was completely exhausted. She fell asleep on our laps. This perfect girl deserved better."

After some health ups and downs during recovery, we are happy to report that today Little Toes is healthy, happy, and adopted! Cheers to that!

"Donna went to pick up these two strays and by the look of things assumed they were both pregnant. They did not want to get out of the car and leave the seat warmer. They were both covered in scars and looked much older than they were. These two had definitely seen some things.

Turns out one was for sure preggers and the other one had just been a puppy factory. They've had a hard life but that changed the second they became part of the SR family. We all immediately loved their sweet faces. We named them Unicorn (confirmed pregnant) and Glitter (confirmed not pregnant).

A few months later:

Glitter is learning how to "dog" here at the shelter. She has lots of pals to keep her company.

Unicorn had her last litter EVER. 7 sparkly babes. They are just at the age of adoption and most of them have already found their forever families. Including UNICORN!

Glitter and Unicorn will never ever have to endure the mean streets again. They will forever be loved and cared for.

...And we think that's the most magical thing of all.

Artist Statement: I am an animal lover who grew up in the St. Louis Metro-East area. Although I live in Los Angeles, California, I have a great fondness for the area and visit family and friends every year.
I like to work in thin layers of acrylic and sometimes add charcoal/pastel markings. I spray-finish the canvas pieces, giving them a light sheen.
I want people to see my work, smile and feel a tug at the heartstrings. These sweet animals and the people who help them make my job easy.

Heart & Soul's story captured and broke the hearts of people all over the world. Heart was rescued by Stray Rescue of St. Louis after she and her friend Soul were found on the side of the highway. Soul had been hit by a car and Heart was standing over him to protect him. She wouldn't leave her friends side. Once in the rescue Jeep she kept an eye on him the whole ride back to the shelter. Unfortunately Soul's injuries were too severe and he couldn't be saved. Heart laid her head on his chest as he took his last breath. It was gut-wrenching. There was not a dry eye in the building.

After grieving the loss of her friend, Heart was ready for her forever home. While here at the shelter, Heart was an amazing girl who loved everyone she met. We knew anyone who adopted her would have a loyal friend for life.

Heart has officially been adopted! She even brought Soul along with her to her new home. She has a trinket attached to her collar that has Soul's ashes in it.

Heart & Soul forever.

"My name is Kim Bouldin-Jones. I am a mixed media and abstract artist. My abstract paintings can be a mix of paint, objects, paper and photographs. I have been working with found objects to create 3D collages that tell a story. I like to think of my mixed media collage work as hanging time capsules. I am taking my own photographs from my travels and creating art with them with acrylics and resin. I want my work to pop off the canvas and intrigue people. I want my work to make people reflect about a memory or feeling. I have rediscovered my artistic side after putting it aside for over 2 decades, so all this creativity has been stored up for a long time. This new adventure has pushed me in ways I needed to go. I am excited to see where this takes me next. I am willing to lean into that process and keep learning and growing in this craft."

We found Habanero living in a dilapidated home, curled up trying to keep herself warm. The conditions were horrid. She was so scared. Whatever she went through before didn't matter anymore. We just had to get her rescued. Donna went back with a trap and successfully got her safe and sound. It only took her a day or two to "thaw" and she came out of her shell.

Habanero is now in foster patiently waiting for the next chapter of her life to start. We are sure her forever family is just around the corner!

This super handsome lion dog is Chilli Mac. He was recently returned to Stray Rescue after being adopted for several years. He was very confused being back at the shelter, so we wanted to get him back into a home as soon as possible. Chilli Mac, an older gentleman, still had lots of spunk. Just last week Chilli met his forever parent and they both fell in love instantly. Now adopted, we hear he is absolute perfection. Yay!.

His skin was raw.
This sweet little soul is just about a year old. He was caked in dried blood. His skin infection was so bad that he just couldn't stop scratching. He was literally trying to get out of his own skin he was so miserable. Good Samaritans found him roaming by himself. They could not look the other way. They got him in their car and were able to bring him into us.
One of our staff members said: "When he arrived, I was holding him. He shook his head and I could feel little blood splatters hit my face. He's an angel."

Demodexter is now in a loving his foster home! He's wearing jammies so he doesn't get blood and skin on the furniture while he heals, and he LOVES his jammies! He's been getting a lot of good TLC, rest, and uninterrupted sleep - exactly what he needs to heal. He's a happy boy and so grateful for each new day!

Southern Star: We were asked to take her from a small town after she was found in a trailer where her owner had overdosed and passed away. She had been in there for what they estimated was months. She was transported to us immediately, and we went into action. Southern Star was emaciated. But she also suffered from severe aspiration pneumonia. Once we were able to examine her, we found out she also had a megaesophagus. She seemed to be on the mend, and we thought she was out of the woods when we had ordered her a Bailey Chair. But …our hearts broke when her little body just couldn't regain strength because of the months of starvation.

Our sweet girl left this world knowing love like she never had before.

"I first spotted Marianne Clare while I was out feeding and checking on the street dogs. I had never seen her before and she proved to be a challenge to rescue. Originally, she was coming near me for food but not right up to me, so the next move was to set the trap. But this girl wanted nothing to do with the trap no matter what I put in it.

I knew where she was sleeping, so I started feeding her in the abandoned garage and put one of my field cameras there to keep an eye on her and get a better feel for her daily routine. I got plenty of images of her on camera. But what I noticed was that it looked like she had found a doll that she would carry around and play with. After seeing her on camera with it multiple times, I knew when I rescued her I would have to find that toy.

I fed her for a couple days to get her familiar with me then I decided to try the trap again. Still no luck. She still wanted nothing to do with going in that trap. So, based on her routine, I went back when I thought she would be in the garage, and it finally worked! I was able to get her leashed, and she walked right out to the jeep with me. I also found her "friend" and brought that with us. The doll was kind of creepy, and Marianne who works at Stray Rescue happens to love creepy dolls. So that is who Marianne Clare is named after!"

"Mato's story actually goes back to when he was a puppy. His "owner" was not a nice man. He had multiple dogs that all roamed the streets. He would always get mad at me when I stopped to feed them and would come up to the pile of food and kick it away. His females were always having puppies in the crawl space of the abandoned house next door. We were able to rescue multiple litters, but one of the litters were older and running around more. He was able to get two of those puppies trapped in his back yard. He did allow them to get neutered (by another group since he was not a big fan of me), but soon those puppies were also running the streets. But, they never ran far from his house.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I started seeing the two brothers farther and farther from his house. I was also told by neighbors down the street that they fed them. I kept an eye on them with the intention of rescuing them as soon as I could.

I had not seen the black fluffy brother for a couple of weeks. When he showed up again, he had a large injury to his back leg. I'm guessing that he was hit by a car and probably dragged a bit. The injury was not fresh, but raw all the way to the bone. There was no way I could leave him. He had made his way into an abandoned house and into a back room. The windows were secure, so I knew the door was his only way out. I set a trap because I didn't want him flailing on a leash with his injury. Thankfully, he went in!

We got him to the shelter and although we were not sure at first if he would be able to keep the leg, our vet team worked their magic and after a few weeks of constant bandage changes and laser therapy, his leg healed.

Mato is finally living in the home he deserves. His brother is a roamer and is still on our radar for rescue."

"Ducky Dude was part of a family of Huskies living at an abandoned house. The owner had gone to prison and left the dogs to fend for themselves. Mom was very protective and would hide under the porch. When we approached, mom would pop her head out, growl and bark.

The puppies were not really used to people, so every time we approached they would run under the porch with mom. This made getting the pups a bit challenging. It ended up taking weeks to get them all. Some we were able to corner far enough away from the porch and pick up. Others we had to set traps for and try to lure them out and to the trap. After about 3 weeks, we finally had them all and it was time to get mom. I had no idea if she would actually come out more now that the pups were gone. I set a trap, trailed food from the trap to the spot she would go in/out from under the porch and drove off. I gave her some time to come out and when I went back, she was in the trap. It felt good to finally have mom and all the pups.

Since then, I have learned that dad is back at the house. We will get him as well so the family can all find the forever homes they deserve."

"A call came in from a very sweet woman about a dog that had been staying on the back porch of an abandoned house. When I arrived, she came out to show me exactly where he was. I could see him from the alley behind the lady's house. The yard was covered with weeds and brush, so I approached him from the front of the house. When he saw me, he didn't get up at first; he just watched through the white, wooden railing. He watched as I came around to the porch and then he got up to greet me. He was a bit apprehensive, but a single can of Vienna Sausages was all it took for him to let me leash him and walk to the jeep. Oftentimes, they just seem to know that we are there to help."

"While driving around, I spotted a momma kitty and her kittens. I generally try to figure out if kittens are young enough to be socialized and adopted and then try to TNR (trap, neuter, return) mom. But in this case, mom was friendly as well. I'm pretty sure that they actually lived at the trailer that had burned. The family was forced to move when their home burned, and the mom was left behind and now had kittens. It turns out that dad was also there and friendly. So this time, the entire family was rescued!"

"When some construction workers called about a mom and her 3 puppies in a pipe on their construction site, we went right over.

Mom was watching and started off being a bit growly. But she was hungry and let me leash her as she gobbled up the food. I guided her out of the pipe and to our surprise, it wasn't mom, but dad! He was also young, barely an adult himself. If I had to guess, I'd say he probably had the same mom as these pups, but was old enough to now be dad to her newest litter. It's a horrible cycle and until people realize how important it is to spay and neuter your pets, it will never stop.

Dad and all three pups were rescued from that pipe and will never contribute to another litter."

"As it often happens, some concerned neighbors alerted us to a dog that had been in an abandoned house for at least a week. This house was not just a dilapidated, abandoned house. There were large areas of floors missing and parts of the stairs as well. The reports were that the dog was coming out the upstairs window onto the roof. Once we were inside, we were a bit shocked that he would have made his way through the broken parts of the house up to the top floor! We searched for a way up and still had no sightings of the dog.

It became apparent that even if we got to the top floor from inside, there would not be a safe way to try to come down with this dog in tow. We decided the best approach would be to get up there from the outside. The neighbors were nice enough to supply us with the ladder, and up I went. I climbed through the window and kept calling. Still no sign of the dog as I made my way from room to room. Finally, in the last room, as I whistled, a big, skinny boy peeked out from behind a chair and crept his way over to me. It really was like he was saying "are you here for me?"

He followed me back to the room with the window that was our way out. Now I had to figure out how to get him down the ladder. The neighborhood guys were there and ready to help! I got him through the window and out onto the roof, harness wrapped him, picked him up and handed him to the guy waiting on the ladder. He took him and was able to hand him down to the next guy on the ground. He was out of that house and safe! The neighbors were all excited and happy to have helped. Someone said, "that rescue was epic!" So that is how Epic got his name."

"Meet Arlo and Arlette. I'm not sure if Arlette is his mom or aunt, but they are most definitely related. Although they supposedly "belong" to someone, they are seen staying in this abandoned house and always out looking for food. Their coats are in rough shape, thin from the constant scratching from fleas, ribs showing and the same defeated look in their eyes. Arlette has had multiple litters and the last one, Arlo may have even been the dad. This is a horrible cycle that does not have to be. And for these two dogs, that cycle is broken. Both have been rescued and medically treated. Arlette has an enlarged heart from heartworms, but now has the fullest, softest fur and will never have another litter of pups. She is a happy, affectionate girl. Arlo is also a happy, healthy, adopted boy and loved by his family."

Meet Olaf! In December of last year, temperatures plummeted to 2 degrees. It was snowing like crazy. It actually hurt to be outside. Donna worked on getting this sweet young skittish little guy out of the cold for HOURS. After finally getting him to safety (and warmth!) at the shelter, we named him Olaf.

Naturally, this babe was adopted in a snap. Never to be cold or lonely again. Way to let it go, Olaf. Happy new life!

Artist Statement: I am an animal lover who grew up in the St. Louis Metro-East area. Although I live in Los Angeles, California, I have a great fondness for the area and visit family and friends every year.
I like to work in thin layers of acrylic and sometimes add charcoal/pastel markings. I spray-finish the canvas pieces, giving them a light sheen.
I want people to see my work, smile and feel a tug at the heartstrings. These sweet animals and the people who help them make my job easy.

This little nugget Chichi is Mateo. He is around 10 years old and 8 pounds of perfection. He was found roaming alone last summer. He had some health issues and luckily went to foster quickly. There, he's been living the life!

A little blurb from Mateo's foster:

"Stray Rescue took me in after I was found starving and missing half my fur on the streets of St Louis. I've filled out a bit and my fur grew back so beautifully! I'm pretty handsome now, but I don't mean to brag. I'm so happy to be safe and my foster mom LOVES ME. My favorite thing is to be held and loved on by my humans."

Artist Statement: I am an animal lover who grew up in the St. Louis Metro-East area. Although I live in Los Angeles, California, I have a great fondness for the area and visit family and friends every year.
I like to work in thin layers of acrylic and sometimes add charcoal/pastel markings. I spray-finish the canvas pieces, giving them a light sheen.
I want people to see my work, smile and feel a tug at the heartstrings. These sweet animals and the people who help them make my job easy.

"I first spotted Marianne Clare while I was out feeding and checking on the street dogs. I had never seen her before and she proved to be a challenge to rescue. Originally, she was coming near me for food but not right up to me, so the next move was to set the trap. But this girl wanted nothing to do with the trap no matter what I put in it.

I knew where she was sleeping, so I started feeding her in the abandoned garage and put one of my field cameras there to keep an eye on her and get a better feel for her daily routine. I got plenty of images of her on camera. But what I noticed was that it looked like she had found a doll that she would carry around and play with. After seeing her on camera with it multiple times, I knew when I rescued her I would have to find that toy.

I fed her for a couple days to get her familiar with me then I decided to try the trap again. Still no luck. She still wanted nothing to do with going in that trap. So, based on her routine, I went back when I thought she would be in the garage, and it finally worked! I was able to get her leashed, and she walked right out to the jeep with me. I also found her "friend" and brought that with us. The doll was kind of creepy, and Marianne who works at Stray Rescue happens to love creepy dolls. So that is who Marianne Clare is named after!" - Donna Lochmann

"Let me tell you about my best friend, Carlos. I should start by saying this story doesn't have the happiest ending, but that's not to say it isn't a happy story. Carlos first came to Stray Rescue in May 2020. He was under a year old but you could tell he had already had a rough life. That did not stop him from being a sweet, kind, and playful boy. He has the cutest pouty lip. He loved to play with other dogs. He would get the goofiest zoomies when in the yard with his friends! He was so smart. He loved to show off his ability to sit and offer his paw. He was a sweet dog, but due to his life before Stray Rescue, he had a lot of unresolved stress. The adoption and foster team tried many times to find him a proper placement, but could never quite find his perfect home. We never gave up on him. Stray Rescue staff and volunteers became determined to give him the best life possible. He was always out on enrichment adventures with his favorite people. He had countless sleepovers with his friends so that he could have breaks from the shelter. The caregivers, training team, and clinic always ensured his happiness was a priority. The thing that made Carlos the happiest were car rides with his best friends, especially when snacks were involved! He always showed his gratitude by laying a paw on you while you drove him around. Carlos was very happy when playing with stuffed toys! He loved picking his favorite toy and taking it on a walk with him. It sure was adorable.

Unfortunately, Carlos' life was cut short due to an obstruction in his digestive system. The clinic performed expert surgery on him, but his body sadly couldn't recover. He spent his last morning surrounded by his favorite people. He was snuggled, praised, and loved up until his last moment. Through all his hardship in life, at the end of the day, he was just a sweet, loving puppy. He deserved so much more from life. I am eternally grateful he came to Stray Rescue. My life will forever be enriched by the time I spent with him. He was silly, loving, kind, and playful. Our favorite thing to do together was go to Starbucks. This art piece includes a drawing of a photo I took of him enjoying one of the hundreds of pup cups we had together." - Rae Baker

Meet the Moth Puppies: A good Samaritan found a plastic tub full of hours-old puppies in a park - still with their umbilical cords attached.

Mama Groovy had JUST weaned all of her own babies and it was time for her to find a forever home of her own. But since she was such a good mom to her babes, we took a chance and gave her the puppies. She still had plenty of milk and although she was confused at first, she understood those babies were hungry! She began nursing and we are so happy to tell you that all 6 puppies are doing great!

ShutterLee Photography LLC was so touched by our hero Mom taking in and nursing all 6 at-risk newborn puppies, they wanted to do a newborn puppy photoshoot to bring attention to them!

All 6 puppies are doing great - Little miracle babies AND Groovy will be ready for adoption soon!
