This Palauan storyboard is handcarved. The back reads Tebang, Palau.

The carving is about the legend of the first breadfruit tree. A long time ago, on a small island called Ngibtal in Palau there was a big tree. Villagers cut the branches to use for fishing. Every time a branch was cut, a woman cried. Villagers went to find out why the woman cried. She told them each time they cut the branch the breadfruit tree will die if they keep doing that. She told them the tree grows breadfruit. The villagers stopped cutting the tree. The breadfruit grew and the villagers learned to cook it and eat it.

Master glass carver Salvatore Polizzi created this beautiful wave carved vase. Collectors from around the world adore the unique style of this award-winning artist.

You have a rare opportunity for a private tour of the Honolulu Museum of Art with Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art Tyler Cann and Works on Paper, Photography and New Media Fellow Alejandra Rojas Silva.

The fun and informative tour will take about an hour. The curators will share insights on the current exhibits. The exclusive journey is for eight to 10 people.

Cann leads the museum's modern and contemporary art program through innovative exhibitions and acquisitions that reflect the unique geographical position and cultural makeup in Hawaii. Before joining the Honolulu Museum of Art in August 2022, he worked at Columbus Museum of Art (CMA) in Ohio as acting chief curator, director of exhibitions and Pizzuti family curator of contemporary art for nine years. Prior to the Columbus Museum of Art, Cann served as curator of Ikon Gallery in Birmingham, England and spent seven years in Aotearoa New Zealand as a curator at Govett-Brewster Art Gallery in New Plymouth, Taranaki. Originally from Los Angeles, Cann holds a master's degree and is a doctoral candidate in the department of art and architecture at Harvard University. He received a bachelor's degree in history of art from the University of California, Berkeley.

Rojas Silva works on increasing the visibility to HoMA's extensive collection of more than 15,000 European and American works on paper and its 1,500 photographs. Before joining the Honolulu Museum of Art in August 2022, she served as Assistant Professor of Art History at Ohio Wesleyan University, teaching subjects from the Ancient Americas to global contemporary art. Her scholarship centers on identity formation in colonial and post-colonial contexts, and her book project, Flora Incognita, examines the intersection of art and science in early colonial botanical manuscripts. She has curated several exhibitions including the Re-inauguration of the Permanent Collection at the Museo ArquelÃ3gico de Bogotá and Alberto Baraya: An Exhibition to New Zealand. She holds a doctorate in the history of art and architecture from Harvard University and a Masters of Studies, focusing on photography, from the University of Oxford.
