We had to include at least one Babe Ruth moment in the Greatest Moments in Yankee History, and the Greatest Moment in Yankee History from the 1930s was Ruth's "Called Shot".

The setting was baseball's greatest stage: Game 3 of the 1932 World Series in Wrigley Field. The Cubs and the Cubs fans were riding Ruth all game long and in the fifth inning Ruth had enough. He stepped out of the box and appeared to point out to center field, possibly indicating that he would hit one out. Then, of course, he hit a mammoth shot that easily cleared the wall in center field. To this day, baseball historians debate whether the Babe "called his shot", but for Yankee fans, there was and is no doubt.

This package honors that legendary moment with a baseball autographed by the Bambino himself. No serious memorabilia collection is complete without a quality autograph from the greatest baseball player of all time and this baseball certainly qualifies as a centerpiece item. The ball has been signed by Ruth on the sweet spot, as was his custom. The certificate of authenticity notes that the baseball once held four additional signatures (including teammates Bob Meusel and Tony Lazzeri) which have since faded or been removed, but Ruth's signature is still strong, and the baseball is in great condition with blue and red stitching. The package also includes an authentic 1932 World Series Program from Wrigley Field which, although creased (likely by the fan who purchased it at the game over 90 years ago for the price of 25 cents!), it remains unscored with the lineups pre-printed on the center page and is fully complete and intact.

Not every great moment is happy. This Greatest Moment in Yankee History celebrates one of the greatest players of all time, the Iron Horse, Lou Gehrig. On July 4th 1939, at Lou Gehrig Appreciation Day at Yankee Stadium, in what has been called one of the most memorable speeches in the annals of sports, Gehrig uttered the still-famous words "today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth." And on July 4th 1941, just a month after Gehrig passed away from the rare condition that now bears his name, the Yankees honored their most-beloved son and retired his number 4.

This framed item honors Lou Gehrig and his modest and remarkable demeanor, as well as his amazing accomplishments on the field. It consists of a photo of Gehrig at his Appreciation Day in 1939, head modestly bowed, as he is about to deliver his famous speech, and an authentic original ticket to Lou Gehrig Memorial Day in 1941. On the back of the framed piece, you will find a complete copy of Gehrig's famous speech, which includes some portions you probably have never heard, including Lou's comment about his mother-in-law.

When baseball experts list the single season records that will never be broken, the 56-game hit streak is one tops the list as not only one of the Greatest Moments in Yankee History, but as one of the greatest streaks of all time. Joe DiMaggio started the streak on May 15, 1941 with a run scoring single. Thereafter, Joe proceeded to hit in an other-worldly 56 straight games.

From the start of his professional career, DiMaggio displayed the skills needed for long hitting streaks. In fact, in 1933, his first season in the minors, DiMaggio assembled a 61-game hit streak, breaking the prior PCL record of 49 games. Prior to the 1941 season, the MLB record for hits in consecutive games was 44, set by Willie Keeler in 1897.

Joe D's streak was filled with drama and significant challenges for DiMaggio, including facing a pitcher who promised to end DiMaggio's streak by getting him out in his first plate appearance and not giving him hittable pitches afterwards, several close calls where DiMaggio extended the streak with late-game hits and the mounting pressure of intense press and fan attention.

DiMaggio's performance during the long streak was nothing short of incredible. During the 56 game streak, he hit .408, drove in 55 runs and scored 56 runs. His performance led the Yankees to a 41-13 record with two ties and the team went from fourth place, 5-1/2 games back at the start of the streak, to first place by 7 games at the end of the streak. Amazingly, the game after DiMaggio's streak ended, he followed with a 16-game hitting streak.

Our memorabilia commemorating DiMaggio's streak is a one-of-a-kind custom piece. It centers around an oversized (23" x 27") autographed lithograph of the Yankee Clipper depicting "My 56th Consecutive Game Hit" which has been personally autographed by DiMaggio. Surrounding the lithograph is a 56-card set that details each game in the streak, including a photo of DiMaggio and the box score of the game. This is truly a special and unique testament to one of the greatest players and one of the greatest records in all of sports.

With the 1956 World Series tied at 2 games each, the Yankees sent Don Larsen to the mound to pitch Game 5 against the mighty Brooklyn Dodgers at Yankee Stadium. The Dodgers lineup featured future Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider and Pee Wee Reese. Against this offensive juggernaut, Larsen performed like no pitcher has performed before or since on MLB's greatest stage - the World Series - by pitching a perfect game and catapulting the Yankees to a world championship in seven games.

Over the almost 150 years of Major League Baseball history and over 250,000 games played, there have been only 23 perfect games pitched (that is 0.000092 if you want to do the math). Larsen's perfecto tops them all.

Larsen had pinpoint control in the game and needed only 97 pitches to complete the game. There were a few close calls, with Mickey Mantle making a back-handed catch on the run in deep center field to rob Gil Hodges, and third baseman Andy Larsen deflecting a line drive to shortstop Gil McDougal, who threw out Jackie Robinson on a close play. But Larsen was magnificent, needing only the support of Mantle's fourth inning homer and a seventh inning insurance run. Larsen finished the game in style with a strikeout of one of the toughest hitters of that era to strike out.

To pay tribute to one of the best pitching performances of all time in the biggest of games, we have assembled and framed a Yankee jersey personally autographed by Don Larsen, to which he added the inscription "WS PG 10-5-56", and an authentic original ticket to the very game where Larsen accomplished this once-in-history feat.

The summer of 1961 will always be known as The Summer of The Great Home Run Race, as Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle each vied to best Babe Ruth's single season home run record of 60. Since Ruth had set that mark in 1927, some had come close (Jimmy Foxx and Hank Greenburg, who each swatted 58 long balls in the 1930s, were the closest), but it had been more than a decade since any player even homered in the mid-50s. The race to beat Ruth is the Greatest Moment in Yankee History for the 1960s.

Since as soon as May and June of the 1961 season, it was clear that the race was on. During that period, Maris hit 26 long balls and Mantle was just behind him at 25. Of course, the nation (sports and otherwise) became enthralled with the race to catch or pass the Babe. The home run race took over the sports pages on a daily basis and sportswriters began to play up a rivalry between Maris and Mantle (or the "M&M Boys", as they were coined).

By the beginning of July, it looked like both Maris and Mantle might break Ruth's record, as they both were ahead of Ruth's pace in his 1927 season. By September 1, Maris had 51 long balls and Mantle had 48. An unfortunate injury to the Mick put him out of the race and he finished the season with 54 long balls. But Maris kept going and hit his 60th home run on September 26th. Despite the intense pressure, on October 1, the last day of the season, in his second at bat of the day, Maris hit #61, giving him the title of the All-Time Season HR King.

You can relive that memorable summer (after all, memorabilia is all about memories) with this unique and one-of-a-kind package. After the first 5 games of the series, the Yankees led the NL champion Dodgers 3-2, needing to clinch the series in Yankee Stadium rather than risk a Game 7. Going into Game 6, Reggie was red hot, having hit home runs in each of Game 4 and Game 5. But in Game 6, the Yankees were facing an equally red hot Burt Hooton, who had shut down the Yankees in Game 2, throwing a complete game and giving up only 1 run and 5 hits. In Jackson's first at bat in Game 6, he did not see a strike, as Hooton walked him on four straight balls. In his next at bat in the fourth inning with the game tied, Reggie blasted Hooton's first pitch to the delirious fans in the stands in right field, giving the home town heroes the lead. The very next inning, facing Elias Sosa, Jackson crushed another two-run home run deep into the right field stands on the very first pitch. In Reggie's next at bat, this time in the eighth inning against Charlie Hough, Jackson again hit the first pitch he saw, this time homering 450+ feet to deep center field.
Jackson became only the second player in World Series history to hit three home runs in a game. The first player to do so? Babe Ruth hit three in both the 1926 and 1928 World Series. But Jackson hit his three HRs on three consecutive pitches against three different pitchers. Jackson was the easy choice for MVP of the 1977 World Series, hitting .450 with five home runs. It also cemented his status as "Mr. October."

One of the rarest feats in MLB history is a long home run streak. In all of MLB history, only three players have hit home runs in eight consecutive games: Dale Long, Ken Griffey Jr. and Don Mattingly. By comparison, pitching a perfect game seems downright pedestrian (23 of them in history, as we mention a few times in our auction descriptions). The Greatest Yankee Moment of the 1980s celebrates Mattingly's truly Herculean feat, when he hit home runs in eight consecutive games in a thrilling July of 1987.
Mattingly's streak began at the game on July 8th. In the prior two seasons, Mattingly hit 35 and 31 home runs, but before that game, he had only 8 home runs as the Yankees were just past the halfway point of the 1987 season. That uncharacteristic power outage was about to come to an exciting end.
Donnie Baseball hit two home runs in the first game of his streak. He followed by destroying White Sox pitching in the next series by hitting four home runs in the four game series (including a grand slam) and extending his streak to five games in a row before baseball hit the All-Star break. After the break with the Yankees on a road trip, Mattingly took up where he left off, hitting another grand slam and a two-run shot in the first post-break game. The next night he extended the streak to seven games in a row with a solo HR. By this time, the media was well aware of the significance of Mattingly's home run tear and the pressure only intensified to break the then record of eight consecutive HR games set by Long. In the eighth game Mattingly came through again, earning the rare standing ovation on the road.
Although Mattingly's streak ended in a tie with Long and Griffey, Mattingly hit 10 HRs, while the others hit eight HRs during their eight-game streaks. In addition to the HR streak, Mattingly also broke another AL record in July of 1987 held by a fellow you may have heard of - Babe Ruth. Mattingly broke Ruth's record of at least one extra-base hit in 10 consecutive games.

But the Davids - Wells and Cone - treated Yankee fans to ultimate pitching perfection in back-to-back seasons in 1998 and 1999 to mark the Greatest Moments in Yankee History for the 1990s.

On May 17, 1998, David Wells pitched the second perfect game in Yankee history (amazingly, with Don Larsen in attendance) and the very next season, on July 18, 1999, David Cone pitched the third perfect game in Yankee history.

The game marked the 26th time the Yankees and Red Sox played each other in 2003, so there were no secrets between the teams. In the bottom of the 11th, the game was tied at 3-3 and Mariano Rivera had just finished shutting out the Red Sox for three innings and was likely done for the game. Boone led off the Yankee 11th against Tim Wakefield, the Bosox knuckleballer. Wakefield threw his first pitch squarely into Boone's wheelhouse and he didn't miss it. He sent a rocket into the left field stands and sent the Yankees to the 2003 World Series. As the crowd collectively lost their minds, Boone jogged around the bases before being mobbed as he jumped on home plate for the win. He then proceeded to hug every teammate he could locate in the wild celebration on the field.

Every Yankee fan alive at the time remembers that scene as if it were yesterday. But you cannot have enough memories of that moment, so don't let this opportunity get away! This Boone jersey has been personally autographed by the current Yankee skipper for the Rizzo Family Foundation.

On July 9, 2011, Jeter became the 28th member of the exclusive 3,000 career hit club in memorable fashion. He started the day with 2,998 hits and the pressure was on if Jeter was going to get to 3,000 before the home fans, since there were only two games left in the homestand. Getting to 3,000 in any way would be special, but if the lifelong Yankee could do it in front of his fans, it would be particularly meaningful. Derek had to feel good after he singled in his first at bat in the game, leaving him only one hit short. In his second at bat, he battled David Price and, on the eighth pitch of that at bat, he crushed a home run to left field for career hit number 3,000. The crowd, of course, erupted in joy.

But Jeter wasn't finished that day. He ended up going 5-for-5 and driving in the winning run in the 9th inning. Not many players can boast about achieving their career milestone in such grand fashion.

Serafin Alvarado's love of wine began more than decade ago, as a room service waiter for Hilton Hotels in his native Puerto Rico. It was the beginning of a career path that would ultimately lead him to achieve the remarkable distinction of becoming a Master Sommelier (M.S.) in 2005, achieving the status that only 105 other North Americans have reached after passing the rigorous M.S. examination. Serafin has also turned his passion for wine into a successful career, working in positions in wine service, wine sales and most recently, wine education, joining Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits of Illinois, the largest wine wholesaler in the United States headquartered in Miami, Florida, as Director of Wine Education. After two years working in the hotel industry in Puerto Rico, in 1994, Alvarado transitioned to a key role at Cadierno Corporation, a Puerto Rican fine wine distributor, where he established the island's most prominent wine school. His wine courses became very popular and highly acclaimed by local press, attributed to his easy, entertaining, yet informative teaching style.

Alvarado's most formative wine experience came after a move to in 2001 to work alongside Chef Charlie Trotter at his famed restaurant Charlie Trotter's. Alvarado led a team of sommeliers responsible of managing one of the finest restaurant wine programs in America, following in the footsteps of his mentors: Larry Stone, M.S. and Joe Spellman, M.S. In his five years at the restaurant, Alvarado received considerable praise for his work establishing himself as one of the top sommeliers in the nation. In October of 2005, Serafin received the Bill Rice distinguished Sommelier of the Year Award for his contribution to the culture of food & wine in the city of Chicago.

Crain's Chicago Business Magazine included Serafin Alvarado among 40 outstanding individuals, local to the Chicago area, who have made a major impact in their respective industries before the age of 40. Former winners include professional actors and athletes, presidents and CEOs of major Fortune 500 companies, and high-ranking political figures. Crain's calls these rising stars "The Top 40 Under 40". Today, along with his education responsibilities at Southern Glazer's Wine & Spirits, Serafin also finds time to teach and mentor Master Sommelier candidates through the program.
