The story of the R.D.C. Shoe Company is one of family and faith. It all began when I met my wife, and we were married in 1999. I owned a tennis store named Stringers, and I also taught tennis lessons to kids. This is where my wife designed colored shoes for the kids to be different on the courts. In the summer of 2001, I was invited to string racquets at the U.S. Open in NYC for some of the greatest tennis players at the time including Venus and Serena Williams. This is where the story of the Glory shoes begins. After the tragedy of 9/11, my wife drew on a pair of Reebok shoes with fabric paint and a red sharpie marker to design the Glory shoes. They were a big hit, but they were not produced yet. All the big shoe companies at the time wanted the design but would only pay $25,000 for the design and I would not own it anymore. I refused to sell my design and I am so glad that I did not. In 2005 I became a police officer for the Roanoke City Police department. I knew after 9/11 that I wanted to either go back on the Marines or become a first responder. I knew I couldn't go back in the military because I was medically retired due to an injury that I received as an M60-A1 tanker. Being a police officer was my way of giving back to the Country that I love so much. Flashforward to 2018 when I met the Marine that would change my life forever, I met Herschel Woody Williams. I met him during a Gold Star Monument dedication that his Foundation does for Gold Star families across the country and now world. I told him that him that I wanted to do something to help his foundation. I kept in touch with Chad Graham his grandson who runs the foundation and Brent Casey his other grandson that runs Valor coins that makes challenge coins for Woody. I told them of my idea of the shoe and how I can help the foundation and they instantly liked the idea. During the 9/11/2021 weekend in Boston for the Congressional Medal of Honor Convention I was able to meet with many CMOH recipients and spoke to them about the shoe project and my idea to help. After Boston, I was able to sign a Co-Operative agreement with both the CMOH society and the Woody Williams Foundation which would give back $10 to each of the organizations with each sale of the shoes. There is now a new addition to the shoe project, and it is probably the most important. While I was in Boston, I met with some recipients that were saying a final goodbye to their family member that has received the medal of honor but had passed on. There is a memorial every year at the convention to say goodbye to their fallen brother. The families were afraid that their loved one would not be remembered, and their story would be forgotten. This is where the idea of putting cards in every box that would tell a recipient's story came about. We are working on getting permission from the recipients, and from families of the ones that have passed and the ones that have received the medal posthumously. We will Never Forget their sacrifice for our incredible Country.

6 June, 1944, Normandy, France. Amidst the roar of D-Day, the paratroopers of Easy Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division, capture the first of four German cannons at Brécourt Manor. Led by Lt. Dick Winters, the 12 men of Easy Company, with a handful of reinforcements, would rout the German gun crews and 50 enemy paratroopers.

The 506th P.I.R.,101st Airborne at Brecourt Manor

In the mid-morning hours of D-Day, June 6, 1944, the deafening sounds of gunfire resounded across the French hills, along the Channel coast and against low-hanging clouds. Amidst the fields of the French farm, Brécourt Manor, a particular cacophony erupted as a German battery of four 105mm cannons shook the soil. Five miles distant, on Utah Beach, the Brécourt battery's steel rained upon American soldiers of the 4th Infantry Division as they disembarked from their landing craft. Within minutes of that first salvo, an ad hoc squad of paratroopers from Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th P.I.R., 101st Airborne, departed the French village of Le Grand-Chemin with a mission to silence those guns...

Having sacked the first cannon, Winters "reorganized the team." James Dietz's painting Silencing the Guns signifies this moment. While Winters confers with Guarnere, troopers Malarkey, Compton, Wynn, and Toye deploy to deliver suppressing fire to keep the Germans on their heels. Figures representing Lipton and Ranney emerge from a background hedgerow to rejoin their comrades. Soon, Guarnere will lead a charge to capture the second gun.

During the days following the D-Day invasion, in a grassy field in Normandy, General Omar Bradley personally awarded Winters the Distinguished Service Cross, the military's 2nd highest award, in recognition of Winters' actions and leadership in the silencing of the guns at Brécourt Manor.

It was a nearly 100-meter-high cliff, with perpendicular sides jutting out into the Channel. It looked down on Utah Beach to the left and Omaha Beach to the right. There were six 155mm cannon in heavily reinforced concrete bunkers that were capable of hitting either beach with their big shells. On the outermost edge of the cliff, the Germans had an elaborate, well-protected outpost, where the spotters had a perfect view and could call back coordinates to the gunners at the 155s. Those guns had to be neutralized. The Allied bombardment of Pointe-du-Hoc had begun weeks before D-Day.

Hang Tough - Bastogne 1944Description

December 24, 1944, north of Bastogne, Belgium…Within the Bois Jacques forest, paratroopers of "Easy" Company, 506th Paratrooper Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne, filter back to their foxholes, having repelled an attack earlier in the day. On this frigid Christmas eve, Captain Dick Winters bolsters his men with his words, "Hang Tough". Despite being surrounded and ill-equipped, the "Band of Brothers" would hold the line. Ultimately, the 101st Airborne would help turn the tide in the Battle of the Bulge. The painting Hang Tough: Bastogne, 1944 was completed in 2006. This was the second in a series of "Band of Brothers" paintings by John Shaw, preceded by We Were a Band of Brothers (2004). This painting was commissioned, and a lithograph edition produced by the Pennsylvania-based publisher, Valor Studios. They have hosted a number of events with these great paratroopers, and have also published a third Shaw Band of Brothers title, The Eagle's Nest, depicting the men of Easy Company celebrating the end of World War II high in the mountains near Berchtesgaden.

June 6, 1944, above occupied France. With steely eyes, the Band of Brothers paratroopers of the 101st Airborne lunge toward their rendezvous with destiny. Many carry a letter from Gen. Eisenhower that they keep tucked under helmets, in jump boots, and in bulging jacket pockets, close to heart.

It read: "Soldiers, Sailors, and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you." At the door of each C-47, with chaos a step away, the troopers knew: "Tonight is the Night of Nights."

From the epic battles of World War II, such as Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima, to the gruelling campaigns in Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan, Marines have repeatedly demonstrated their fighting prowess and unwavering esprit de corps.
The US Marine Corps played a crucial role in combat operations in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Deployed as part of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, Marines blended both regular and irregular tactics, techniques and procedures to combat the Taliban and establish security.
The Marines conducted numerous offensive operations, such as Operation KHANJAR and Operation MOSHTARAK, which aimed to clear Taliban strongholds and disrupt their networks. The Marines demonstrated exceptional courage, resilience and adaptability in the face of these adversities, making significant contributions to the overall mission and the security of Helmand Province. Their actions exemplified the Marine Corps' unrelenting commitment to protecting freedom while building stability in Afghanistan.

BG Donald Dunwoody Blackburn

Bio:
Donald D. Blackburn's special operations career began in the Philippines during World War II when, after escaping from Bataan, he assisted Russell W. Volkmann in organizing the Northern Luzon guerrilla force to fight the Japanese during the remainder of the war.
In the late 1950s following a series of Regular Army assignments and schools, Blackburn commanded the 77th Special Forces Group at Fort Bragg, North Carolina which sent the earliest Special Forces units and soldiers to Laos, Vietnam, Japan, and Okinawa.
Assigned to South Vietnam in 1965, Blackburn commanded the Military Assistance Command Vietnam-Studies and Observation Group (MACV-SOG) and reinstituted cross-border operations to interdict the flow of supplies along the Ho Chi Minh Trail into Vietnam from Laos and Cambodia under the code name of Operation SHINING BRASS.
In 1970, Blackburn returned to special operations as the Special Assistant for Counterinsurgency and Special Activities in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (SACSA) where he personally selected the personnel and designed the mission to rescue American prisoners of war from North Vietnam's Son Tay Prison. Retiring in 1971, BG Blackburn remained active in the special operations community as a member of the Special Operations Policy Advisory Group chaired by the Assistant Secretary of Defense.
Summary of Service
Donald D. Blackburn was a true Army Special Operations Forces (ARSOF) pioneer. His service during World War II and in multiple tours in Vietnam placed him in the midst of many of the Army's formative experiences in special operations. His keen familiarity working with indigenous groups and guerrilla forces made him one of the foremost experts in unconventional warfare. Throughout his career, he taught several generations of ARSOF warriors the crucial lessons he gained in combat.

The Studies and Observations Group or "SOG" of Military Assistance Command Vietnam dispatched Green Berets on some of the Vietnam War's most dangerous missions - deep behind enemy lines in Laos and Cambodia to interdict the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Their history is storied with SOG Green Berets earning nine Medals of Honor. Long range reconnaissance missions, bomb damage assessments, kidnapping, assassinations and direct action all in the deep triple canopy jungle. Once a recon man had attained the respect of his fellow SOG teammates, he was said to be "good in the woods". This print depicts a recon team deep in the Laotian jungle. The team includes the Montagnard mercenaries who the Special Forces soldiers came to love so dearly. The recon man on the team's far left carries a cut-down communist RPD machine gun while the other SOG men carry the XM-177 carbine.
