Robert Indiana born Robert Clark is well known for his LOVE imagery, but his art goes beyond just LOVE. "There have been many American SIGN painters, but there never were any American sign PAINTERS." This exercise in emphasis sums up Robert Indiana's position in the world of contemporary art. He has taken the everyday symbols of roadside America and made them into brilliantly colored geometric pop art. In his work he has been an ironic commentator on the American scene. Both his graphics and his paintings have made cultural statements on life and, during the rebellious 1960s, pointed political statements as well. Born Robert Clark in New Castle, Indiana, in 1928, he adopted the name of his native state as a pseudonymous surname early in his career. During his typically Midwestern boyhood, highway signs had a symbolic importance for him. His father worked for Phillips 66 gas and, when he left his wife and son, he did so down Route #66. And the diner which his mother subsequently operated had the familiar "EAT" sign looming overhead. Indiana studied first at the Herron School of Art in Indianapolis and then at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute in Utica, New York. From there he went to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he received a degree in 1953 and won a traveling fellowship to Europe. In 1954, he attended Edinburgh University and Edinburgh College of Art in Scotland. Back in America, Indiana settled in the historic Coentes Slip area on the New York waterfront in 1956 and showed his first hard-edged paintings the following year. From the start he worked with bold, contrasting, sometimes clashing, colors that mirror familiar signs along the highways. A moralist at heart and an admirer of Longfellow, Whitman and Melville, Indiana often wryly prods his viewers. In a billboard4ike triptych dedicated to Melville, for example, he reminds them of Manhattan's past and suggests they walk around the island-city. He also feels a strong kinship with such earlier precisionist painters as Charles Demuth and showed his admiration in The Demuth American Dream No.5 (1963, Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto). Although painted in Indiana's own idiom, it was clearly inspired by Demuth's well-known I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold (1928, Metropolitan Museum of Art). The American dream has been a recurring theme in Indiana's work, and he has used it to both celebrate and criticize the national way of life. In the midst of all the gaudy, star-spangled color of The American Dream #J (1961, Museum of Modern Art), for instance, he highlights the words "Take All" and "Tilt" as reminders both of Americans' materialism and of the tendency of some to cheat, as they do on pinball machines. In his paintings and constructions he has given new meaning to such basic words as "Eat", "Die" and "Love" . Using them in bold block letters in vivid colors, he has enticed his viewers to look at the commonplace from a new perspective. One indication of his success was the appearance of his immensely popular multi-colored "Love" on a United States postage stamp in 1973.

Adriana is a Brazilian artist from Rio de Janeiro, who has explored a variety of mediums, but has recently fallen in love with puppetry. She believes in the healing power of stories and she hopes this puppet will bring their voice to countless tales.

Paul Wunderlich was a German artist best known for his Surrealist paintings and erotic sculpture, which secured his reputation as one of the most important members of the Magic Realist circle of artists. Wunderlich's early representational subject matter included recent scenes of Germany's oppressive history during World War II, but his imagery later turned towards Surrealist-influenced works, featuring sexual imagery and fantastic, floating forms. He was born on March 10, 1927 in Eberswalde, Germany and studied graphic art at the Landeskunstschule in Hamburg before becoming an art teacher there. During that time, he learned printmaking techniques from the well-known artists Emil Nolde and Oskar Kokoschka. Wunderlich also began painting using the free-form, Expressionist style of Tachism, but later abandoned it for more figurative imagery. In 1960, he moved to Paris and lived there for three years while working in the Deskjoberts workshop as a lithographer. From 1951 to 1960, he taught as a professor at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg and from the 1970s on, his energies turned to sculpture. He lived between Hamburg and France before his death on June 6, 2010, in Provence, France.

Prominent Tallahassee artist George Milton, who was the first painter to have a one-man exhibition at The LeMoyne Art Foundation when it opened in 1964, died late Friday night of a kidney infection and complications. He was 86.

Milton was also a retired Florida State University anthropology professor, a member of the Air Force during World War II, a world traveler, a scholar, an art historian, a voracious reader, a collector, a quick wit and one of the most charming Southern gentlemen ever to come from North Florida. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth Milton of Daytona Beach.

"He was always inventive; he was the most creative person I've ever known," friend and former LeMoyne director Richard Puckett said.

"He had more one-man shows at LeMoyne than anyone else. He was so prolific, and each show had a different theme. He switched styles a lot. He was restless and always wanting to try new things."

"He had such a purity of spirit, yet he also had an outrageous wit, and they both worked together somehow," said Nancy Smith Fichter, friend and founder of FSU's dance department.

"I would say I was going to stop by his house for half an hour, and it was always two hours minimum. I would be rolling on the floor with laughter. I'm really going to miss him."

"He was a shy person, but he knew how to make people like him instantly," Puckett said. "He really was one of the most charming people you've ever met."

In 1972, Milton became friends with legendary actress-singer Lotte Lenya when she visited FSU to star in a production of "The Threepenny Opera." The artist helped Lenya apply her elaborate stage makeup, and the two hit it off.

"He even got Lotte to come to his classroom and sing 'Mack the Knife' for his students," Elizabeth Milton said.

Born in Marianna, Milton loved to recall stories of his childhood - which included a bout with polio and a stay in a sanitatium, where he and a friend published a hospital newsletter filled with fictitious reports, all illustrated by Milton. He was a direct descendant of Gov. John Milton, who served in office during the Civil War. The Southern upbringing also left Milton with a distinctive, lilting Southern accent.

"I sound like I eat Spanish moss and magnolias for breakfast," Milton joked in an interview with the Democrat.

During the late '30s, Milton studied at the Alabama Polytechnic Institute at Auburn. He was stationed near Washington during his stint in the Air Force and studied painting at the prestigious Corcoran School of Art in Washington after the war.

In 1954, after studying with famed artist and professor Karl Zerbe, Milton received a master's degree in painting and art history from FSU. He began teaching in the anthropology department. Milton also took many trips around the world - from Europe to the Middle East to South America - sifting through archaeological sites.

Once, when he returned from a research trip to England, Milton wrote the Queen of England, complimenting her on having such a polite nation. The queen wrote him a thank-you letter in return.

Milton received a bachelor's degree from FSU's creative-writing program in 1980, the same year he retired from teaching at the university.

His colorful art also drew inspiration from everywhere. His subjects included characters from the Bible, writers from the Bloomsbury Group, birds, dancers, circus performers, still lifes and much more. He once did a series of copies of famous masterpieces using only crayons.

"A painting is a record of an individuals's personal and vicarious experiences and sensations which he records symbolically and representatively through such media as line, color, form and texture as they are guided by his conscious and subconscious mind," Milton once wrote of his art.

With trip protection, there is no rebooking fee for cancelations more than 31 days prior to arrival and a $99 rebooking fee is due for cancelations 15-30 days prior to arrival. Cancelation less than 14 days prior to arrival, with or without trip protection, is subject to forfeiture of reservations and funds.
