In the early 19th century, Ecuador began exporting an enormous amount of toquilla palm straw hats to Panama, which led to these hats being called "Panama hats". Today, authentic Panama hat bodies are still woven in Ecuador using fine strands of toquilla palm straw. This Panama hat body was sourced from master Ecuadorian weavers and finished by hand.
