American & Latin Grammy Award winner, Sergio Mendes is returning to the Playhouse for the first time in 5 years! With more than 55 releases to his name, Mendes is known as a Brazilian icon and a pioneer of Bossa Nova music, blending Latin sounds with Jazz and Funk influences. One of the most successful Brazilian artists in history, his work with his group, Brasil '66, churned out hits such as "Mas Que Nada" and "The Look of Love," and his solo career yielded the Adult Contemporary hit "Never Gonna Let You Go."
Mendes has collaborated with everyone from Jazz legends like Cannonball Addereley to modern day acts like John Legend. His music was recently introduced to younger generations when he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song as co-writer of "Real in Rio" from the animated film Rio.
Throughout his six-decade career, Mendes claims he has worked to weave one common thread through all of his diverse work: the spirit of joy.
