  Sir Isaac Julien's immersive, multi-screen film installation Lessons of the Hour anchors this exploration of Frederick Douglass' reflections on image-making, race, and citizenship. The exhibition brings together rare nineteenth-century daguerreotypes-on public view for the first time-saluting the studio practices of the African American photographers of Douglass's era, as well as the many compelling sitters who sought to have their images captured and remembered.
• JUSTINE KURLAND: GIRL PICTURES, Through September 10, 2023
  The most celebrated series in the artist's oeuvre thus far, Kurland's Girl Pictures (1997-2002) is emblematic of teenage experience. Started in New Haven, Connecticut, the series tells a fictional story of an empowered community of young women. The series was acquired by the Wadsworth in 2022.

• MY HEART IS LIGHT IN THE VOID, Through August 27, 2023
  For New Haven-based photographer and artist Merik Goma, art creates opportunities to look at things from different perspectives. As the inaugural Joyce C. Willis Artist in Residence at the Amistad Center for Art & Culture, Goma has spent the past 18 months immersed in The Amistad Center's art, artifacts, and archives and preparing to unveil his latest work, "My Heart is Light in the Void."
