Lose Yourself in the Artist's Vision

Acrylic on Canvas by Carolyn Mara

34" x 48" Contemporary Art Painting

Carolyn Mara is a Houston born multimedia artist whose creative methodology uses videographical performance art, conceptual photography, and large-scale fine arts painting to explore ideas of personal struggle and pain as it relates to our collective human experience.

Beginning her artist journey with photography, Carolyn transitioned into performance art and painting as a means to express herself through movement. Her large-scale abstract paintings are created using a mop as her paint brush allowing her to work with large body movements and create work grounded in understanding force, restraint, intuition and spontaneity.

Carolyn received her Masters of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in NYC and her work is currently being exhibited in a joint show at the Pan American Art Projects gallery in Miami, FL and in a solo show at Studio 703 in Houston, TX. Her work has also been recognized by the Shorty Awards as well as the Siena International Photo Awards and she was an overall winning artist of the 2016 IPPA Awards.

Carolyn is also an avid tiktoker and instagrammer, to view her TikTok please follow @carolynmara and Instagram please follow @carolyn_mara

She currently lives in Miami, Florida with her husband, two sons and young daughter.

ARTIST STATEMENT
As I grew and aged as an artist I felt confined by the structure and detail of my conceptual projects. I learned to let go of the initial control I needed to feed my emotions through art and instead grabbed a mop as a brush, so that my control could happen only in the very moment of execution. This large-scale, abstract work on canvas is created from a series of throws and strokes with my mop - stemming from an artistic practice grounded in understanding movement, restraint, intuition, and spontaneity. I am exploring my own emotional states in relation to the movements and decisions I make while creating each piece. I openly share this process with my viewers and critics, challenging many of their notions of what art is, and what it can be. In a time where owning a keyboard and having an internet connection makes people believe they are authorities on artistry, my goal is to break down the barriers of beauty to show that art can be anything created through harnessing one's emotion and executing on one's vision.
