A private tour of the special exhibition "Bizarre Mountains, Withered Trees: Fukuda Kodojin, Japan's Forgotten Poet and Painter" which will be on view April 22 until July 23, 2023.

Fukuda Kodojin (1865-1944) and a handful of other scholar-artists carried Japan's literati painting tradition (Nanga) into the 20th century. Characteristic for Kodojin's painting style are bizarre mountain formations that often include a recluse, enjoying time in nature. Kodojin was not only a painter but also an accomplished scholar, poet, and calligrapher who was favored by influential industrialists and politicians in his time. Forgotten after his death, he is today highly appreciated outside of Japan, and this is the most comprehensive exhibition of Kodojin ever held.

A private tour for four of special exhibition "The Art of Literacy" with
Mai Yamaguchi, PhD, the Andrew W. Mellon Assistant Curator of Japanese and Korean Art at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

In nineteenth-century Japan, people beyond the elite were able to read and write due to the convergence of several factors, including the development of temple schools and the increased availability of inexpensive publications. "The Art of Literacy" explores how people in nineteenth century Japan used visual and textual literacy, cultivated through books and other sources, to understand the world around them. The exhibition will be on view from March 18 to August 16, 2023.
