Born into an intellectual's family in China's Guangzhou City, Maria Kim was nurtured in the fertile soil of Chinese culture since childhood. At the age of eight, she moved to Macao with her family. In middle school, she began to learn painting. Having graduated from Taiwan, she passed through many places and finally settled down in the U.S.
