My daughter Lakota Skye was born premature at 34 weeks and she was an En Caul Birth. On the morning of her birth I witnessed the most beautiful sunrise I've ever seen in North Dakota, my homelands. It was that particular sunrise that inspired the current Sky Collection. That February the circle of life came full circle in 4 days. Although I was over 1700 miles from our current home in New York, without my husband or other children, I had my ina' (mom) next to me. Our family had just lost Auntie Tracey Many wounds. Tracey was a master bead worker and her designs were unmatched. She was a second mother to me. I am here today, thankful for our time together and all the teachings she handed down to me including beadwork which is seen throughout my collection. The birth of Lakota Skye gave me so much strength to continue curating my dreams.I hope my story will encourage those faced with pain of losing a loved one and can also be inspired by their own strength. I am currently still breastfeeding Lakota and she continues to strengthen me in my journey. We have many upcoming shows including London, Paris and Nigeria for 2023! Keep a look out for us!

What separates Kayla Lookinghorse from other designers is her hunkpapa/Itazipco Lakota heritage and the way it is artfully woven into her designs. K. Lookinghorse is a contemporary brand that honors the designer's heritage with an aesthetic specific to her tiospaye' (family). Description/Inspiration:

The wolf is a symbol of loyalty, strong family ties, excellent communication, education, understanding, and intelligence. The wolf is also known to some, including myself, as a messenger from Creator. During my travels over the years, wolves have shown themselves to me to warn of dangers ahead. It is both to show my gratitude and to honor, not only Creator but also His messenger that inspired the creation of this bag. The beadwork for the wolf was done entirely in my Signature modified Square stitch and is guaranteed from ever falling apart through normal wear and tear. Each bead, added one at a time, is individually sewn to each of the surrounding beads using only 100% silk thread. Using this stitch, each bead ends up with between 6 and 9 strands of thread through it. Durable and strong!

Artist Bio/Statement:

I've worked with such mediums as pencil, pen, charcoal, pastels and paints. Born for the Odawa Nation and originating from an ancestral home renowned world-wide for its beautiful beadwork and artistry, mid-way through life and working under my Odawa name of Waawaaskonenhens (Little Flower), I chose to put down my pencils and brushes to pick up a beading needle. Beading is my life's passion and picking up that needle is like opening the door into my own little world. Working in the strongest stitch possible and creating pieces that fuel the imagination bonds together intense pride in art and heritage. By modifying the strongest of all stitches, the traditional Square Stitch, to double its strength, using only 100% silk thread and natural beeswax, the result is a piece of work that will last for many generations. It is true that my first love and specialty is beading. The freedom to lay down the beading needle and pick up a file for smoothing and sizing bone and horn, or a glovers needle for sewing hide. The freedom to bring ancestral work into the future by way of contemporary designs while maintaining the quality of the traditional. With the exception of the synthetic sinew used for stringing or sewing, the traditionalist in me insists on using all natural materials while the creative individualist side of me feels the need to expand on the traditional ? the need to step outside the box ? the need to be "different". I hope I have succeeded! It is my prayer that the resulting works signify honor and respect to the ancestors in every piece.

Long ago, the Southern Utes of Colorado told of a plague that medicine men could not cure. A council gathered on the riverbank and built an enormous fire, danced and prayed for help, then fell into a deep sleep. When they woke, a spring of fragrant hot water had replaced the fire. They bathed and were healed by the springs, naming it "pah" (water) and "gosa" (boiling). In the center of this blanket design, blue hot springs rise through medallions of fire to bring peace and health.

Artist Bio:

Lindsey Thornburg was born in Great Falls, Montana. The only child of two young parents, she spent her childhood between Seattle and Montana before moving to the Aspen area for middle school and high school. She spent most of her youth traveling between family members and different schools. Throughout this period, she learned about adaptation and identity through fashion. Lindsey attended college in Santa Barbara and Design school in Los Angeles. She moved to NYC in 2003, with no interest in working for corporations, she set up shop and began selling her small dress collections on the streets of downtown. Growing up with western and Pacific Northwest roots, she was familiar with Pendleton from an early age. She envisioned modernizing their fabrications and born was her collaboration with the esteemed brand. The idea was of creative necessity. She wasn't able to find or afford any suitable winter jackets, she began wearing the blankets outside. This led to the idea that a high quality garment could be constructed from the beautiful fabrics. In 2011 Pendleton agreed to collaborate with Lindsey Thornburg. Given the legacy and the Native history Pendleton holds, Lindsey takes this collaboration very seriously and honors the privilege of working with America's finest woolen will company. Never viewing her creations as passing trends, she strives to make each garment an heirloom piece. The company has been self-funded and has grown its audience organically. All garments are considered, cut and constructed in NYC by Stacey Berry and Lindsey Thornburg.

Susan Sandfly has been designing and producing one of-a-kind creations in her home, at Big Island Lake Cree Nation. She started with ribbon skirts and shirts and then in 2016 she expanded to footwear. Susan's participation in dancing inspired her to create a unique style of footware that no one else had. Her footware collection has had sales from Ontario to BC and has crossed the border into North and South Dakota and Arizona, USA. Susan's collection of fashion also includes belts and Fedora hats. Mequan Creeation came to life and hit the stage in the fall of 2009, when Susan independently hosted a fashion show to open for a concert at Big Island Lake School. Since that opening, Susan has been invited to many fashion shows and continues to create beautiful work! This past month, Susan's "Red Earth" dress traveled overseas to showcase on the Paris fashion runways! Dreams do come true.

Flowers and floral designs are central to Ukwehuwé cultural designs. This is a contemporary take on a floral design. With gold, copper, pink and yellow tones, this piece is larger than most of Otsí:tsi'designs florals. It has gold findings and 14k gold hooks; backed with deer hide. Rebecca Doxtator (she/ they) is from the Oneida Nation of the Thames community and the artist behind Otsí:tsi'designs. Rebecca started beading in 2014 and her work has gone from being a casual hobby to an artistic passion. She creates beautiful and unique beadwork from earrings to bolo ties with on of-a-kind designs. Artist Bio/Statement:

I explore new directions in Native American Art and Fashion, and utilize classical methods to develop a new contemporary vision of Native Art & Fashion. I strive to create new artwork that continues to the tradition of Contemporary Native Art, and pushes the boundaries of varying mediums, such as painting, holographic sculpture, poetry, and Fashion Design. I paint, I sculpt, I write, I design, I try to find the best platform to express and convey a thought and emotion. As a veteran with PTSD, I had to find myself again as an artist when I came back from overseas. I spent over 12 years in war zones, and before I deployed, I had studied art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Holland and IAIA, in Santa Fe, N.M. As the apprentice of Earl Biss, my adopted father, I was able to delve even further into classical art. Upon return to the States, I started my studio again with the hopes to express the trauma of war, and find a platform to continually express myself, externalize the trauma, and eventually, hopefully help others. As a Fashion Designer, I have always wanted to explore this platform. For me, clothes can empower a person to feel better about themselves. Fashion Design can be a symbol of empowerment, or it can be utilitarian in use, and it can bring awareness to vital issues in Indian Country. The Sky-Eagle Collection was born out of a need to be a New Warrior in the Modern World. As a Veteran I always wanted to give back to my community, and when my daughter was born I wanted to do even more. Aroud this time I found out about the Missing and Murdered Womens Crisis and I wanted to see what I could do to protect my daughter, and my Native People. I have created platforms that can bring awareness to issues, with the hopes to inspire action. As I progressed, I have looked for the root cause of these issues, and looking at the data for Native Communities, it is apparent that there is so much work to be done. Issues such as the lowest life expectancy, a lack of
access to resources such as education and healthcare, and generational trauma that is creating vulnerable communities, and the outcomes are evident. I want to do my part, and giving back is the key ethos of the Sky-Eagle Collection. For my daily work, my goal was to work for Native Communities. I earned my Masters Degree in Emergency Management and have been able to work with tribes on capability building and community resilience capabilities development.

Description/Inspiration:

Inspired by watching master potter and friend Peter B. Jones demonstrate traditional pottery. I took some photos of him demonstrating at a festival and decided to create a piece that captured how hands work and create pottery. These antler rings are what i consider special occasion pieces. Although they can be worn everyday, it is recommended that they only be worn occasionally. This will help maintain the color of the piece. It is also recommended that the piece be stored in a box when not in use to avoid long exposure to light and sunlight.

Artist Bio/Statement:

I am a self-taught antler carver and a member of the Seneca Nation of Indians. I began carving in my mid-20's. I was inspired to begin carving after seeing some works by Stan Hill Sr., Wayne Skye and Norman Jimerson, but I developed my own unique style. Early on I realized that antler and bone carving was an art form that did not receive the same amount of acknowledgment as other traditional art forms. In fact, many to this day, still do not recognize the relevance of antler and bone carving within our culture, and therefore the material and art form are in many ways oppressed. So I set forth to not only hone my skills as an artist, but also to to bring to light, the importance of this often overlooked art. I have had no formal education in either arts or arts education. However, I spent/ spend a considerable amount of time researching techniques and tools my people used to work bone/antler. In 2016, I was invited to have my first solo show at the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum. All the while learning as much as I could about how the material relates to our culture. Collaboration is a focus of my work. In 2021, I teamed up with fellow Seneca, Jocelyn Jones who is a culture bearer and model. I photographed her in several locations related to the Thomas Indian School (TIS), which was a Native American residential boarding school that operated on our Cattaraugus Territory. The photos were eventually expanded into a full scale exhibit installation with other 2-d, & 3-d works by other artists. It is currently on loan to the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum. This is one example, however my collaborations take many forms. Most often I use what I do and any platform and opportunity I have to help uplift the voices of women and women artists. My life's work is also to help restore in small ways, the role of women in our culture and society. I believe my current work (carving, knowledge sharing, education/lectures, curatorial, collaborations) is really coming into a good place. I feel like all of my efforts in the revitalization of antler carving are making a difference. Even though the numbers of carvers (or those revitalizing utilitarian bone usage) I work with or talk with are small, they are more. And the opportunities to talk to institutions about the material and art form from a cultural perspective is increasing. My future work will be a continued exploration of material innovations, and as it is now, confrontation with social topics, uplifting our women, and using my work to help revitalize antler carving.

Ikerson Hopper is an Onondaga Nation based artist who specializes in traditional customized works in various mediums. His artistic expression includes graphic design, porcupine quillwork, beadwork, woodcarving, tattoo and apparel design.

Ikerson loves creating one of a kind pieces, very rarely replicating a piece, keeping nearly everything he designs a one of a kind. He hopes to give insight into the Onondaga culture through his many art forms. As an inherent extension of his work, Ikerson passes along a sense of pride to be Ongwehonweh for future seven generations.

He holds a bachelors degree in graphic design from the University of Adelphi, and has recently begun his career as a full-time artist after years of traveling and playing lacrosse.

I made this piece using materials passed down from my grandmother. Leather weaving to represent the leather work and basket making she used to do. The flowers to represent her beautiful flower garden. The Deer Antler was gifted to me, i wanted to incorporate it because she ran a "hats for hides". This decorative wall hanger will add beauty to any space. "Akhsótha Akò there ne Yetsi'tsyaráhkwa" is Mohawk meaning "My Grandmother's Flowerbasket".

Artist Bio/Statement:

I am the artist behind Three Sisters Designs. My Kanien'kéha name is Karennotakies, which means she is singing around. I am Mohawk turtle clan of Akwesasne. I like using the traditional Hadenosaunee style of raised beadwork. I incorporate natural materials such as leather and wampum as seen in my work. I learned the same way many artist have, at Totas table. My grandma Donna Benedict taught me how to bead, sew, and work with leather. I've be creating since I was 15, going on 13 years all together. I started my business after my grandmother passed away about 4 years ago. She was the driving force behind Three Sisters Designs. Through creating its help me grieve and heal living without her, and I can only strive to as good of an artist as she was. A lot of my inspiration comes from my family, I have a beautiful son and daughter. I also find a lot of inspiration while being a language student and learning more of our history. I love looking at beadwork from the 1800-1900's there so much beauty in our history and language. As I'm working on the piece for the Peace Love Art: Indigenous Collective I'm using techniques my grandmother taught me and techniques that I have learned myself and merging the two together. Im calling the piece "Tota's basket" Tota being the Mohawk term for grandparent. My grandma was also a basket maker so this piece is 100% inspired by her and the teachings she has taught me, in beadwork and life. I'm so excited to show everyone the final piece, and I hope to continue making beadwork that last generations. Ken Fury (Kenneth Marez Jr.) works in multiple mediums, including painting, jewelry, music, dance, poetry, photography, and filmmaking. Description/Inspiration:

My work tends to be very utilitarian in nature. I strive to create pieces that exemplify and honour the long standing tradition of Iroquois beadwork. I am very particular and pay close attention to my finishing detail. I am industriousness a trait that I believe inherited from my maternal grandmother. I have been fortunate to learn the Kanien'keha raised beadwork style and my work tends to follow suit, mainly floral in design. The majority of my beadwork revolves around the many different colours that can be found from nature, however some of my more recent has focused on the monochromatic colour palette. This beaded purse entitled "Simply Elegant" encompasses the elements mentioned above. The ivory coloured florals are accented by earthy browns and hints 24kt gold beads. The handle is sturdy as is the tanned and smoked deer hide that gives this piece it's durability. The cotton calico gives that added contrast that is needed to complete this piece.

Artist Bio:

Leith Mahkewa is a member of the Oneida First Nation of the Thames. She currently lives in the Kanien'kahá:ka (Mohawk) community of Kahnawake with her husband and four children. She has been elevating her artistry for the past 18 years. She tends to create pieces mainly in the Iroquois raised beadwork style and is moving towards incorporating more Hopi/Tewa imagery into her creatiosn to honour her father and his family. In the past 9 years she has been awarded ribbons at both: the Heard Museum Guild Indian Fair and Market (2013, 2014, 2020), the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market (2014, 2019, 2020 & 2022) and the Ganondagan Hodinosoh:ni'Art Show 2020. She has exhibited at the Kanien'kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language & Cultural Center (Kahnawake, QC) and the Woodland Cultural Center (Brantford, ON). Her work is part of the collections of the Hood Museum (Hanover NH) and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art (Overland Park, KS). Leith believes that bead work transcends the generations. Inspired by both personal familial experiences as a youth and songs that not only describe these experiences but draw out the feelings that were felt during these times. Specifically, growing up in a mixed heritage family, the struggles that we faced as a family and individually, including, poverty, exposure to familial alcohol related issues, witnessing and experiencing mental and emotional abuse at times, witnessing the aftermath of extended family members being physically abused, subject to, racism and discrimination, being an intergenerational survivor of residential school. Along with the positive experiences that morphed from our environment, compassion, a work ethic, a survivor mentality, helping the less fortunate, forgiveness, an appreciation and respect for all that we receive and experience in life, whether good, bad, or, indifferent. Love for the land, the waters, the animals, and, each other. Cultures rich in teaching, values and beliefs, and traditions. The patchwork symbolizes the many pieces, narratives and experiences, the putting together, sewing up, along with, the taking apart, undoing, all together, creating, reflecting the many chapters written and being written in our lives. The flower is the beauty that continues to grow, shine through, provide light in our journey. The use of embroidery floss to highlight, outline, or not, the use of beads to add texture and dimension, colors, melding, intermingling, like a kaleidoscope, used to reflect our ever changing feelings as it relates to our experiences. The bag can become heavy at times or lighter as we journey, based on our lived experiences, we may have the choice or not, to make them lighter, life is just that, altogether, it is how we carry them. Gladys Rowan is both Thompson (Nlaka'pamux) from the Boston Bar First Nation (Tuckkwiowhum) - Grandfather's side and Shuswap (Secwepemc) from the Canim Lake Band (Tsq'escen) - Grandmother's side. She was raised in Little Fort, BC and currently resides in 100 Mile House, BC. Gladys has been an artist for 40 plus years. As a child I lived in Peru with my family. My home was in the district of San Isidro, Lima, Peru. Behind my home was a beautiful park named Parque de Olivares. In English that translates to Olive Tree Park. I used to go there daily with my sister and play and climb the olives trees that covered the whole park. It is one of my first and most memorable memories. I think because of how beautiful it is, and how much fun I had playing there, it's stuck in my head like it was just yesterday to this day. These moccasins have beaded olive tree branches, and the vamp is a deep green to represent the luscious greenery of the park.

Hello everyone, my name is Natalie, and I am a Toronto based artist. I focus my art on making handmade jewelry (Traditional and non- traditional), moccasins, dream catchers and other leather work. My work comes from inspiration I find in my heart, culture and experiences. I am of Indigenous Canadian (Ojibwe) and Peruvian background. A lot of my work will show or have meaning connected to my backgrounds. I learned how to bead, and hand make moccasins through traditional teachings. Those teachings I carry with me and continue to practice through my art. The jewelry and moccasins I make, are all made to be worn by anyone who appreciates them.

Description/Inspiration:

Beadsoup means different things to different tribes throughout Indian Country. To me it is a reflection of the resourcefulness that beadworkers exhibited within their craftsmanship. This case is a reflection of the past belief to utilize all of the beads and value them because one does not know when they will be able to afford or obtain beads. Floral work is incorporated into this concept to reflect the dominance of floral patterns within Salish and Crow tribal designs. It has a contemporary twist by emanating a functional phone case.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Salisha Old Bull was born in Eastern Montana and raised on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Western Montana. Her mother is Salish and father is Crow so she has a well rounded bundle of Indigenous teachings from the Montana area. She is married to Shandin Pete and has 5 children. She was an aspiring artist as a child but chose to follow a different career path. She kept art in the background of her life and expressed most of her creativity through beadwork. She was taught to bead by her maternal grandmother, Rachel Arlee Bowers when she was a very young child and considers her earliest memories of beading at about her second grade in elementary school. In addition, painting, photography, digital art, and drawing are other favorite mediums. She gains inspiration from traditional ecological knowledge from both Salish and Crow tribes and uses this imagery within her artwork. These aspects of cultural knowledge are the attributes that empower Indigenous people.

I thought about all the issues that are effecting our People and how hard it is to keep a good mind, staying strong and Sgë:nö' (Peace/Wellbeing in Seneca). I thought I could put all that in beadwork and on a hat. #EveryChildMatter, #MyBodyMyChoice, #LandBack, #MMIW are all issues that may be personal, hot button and tragic, but they affect everyone in a different manner and depth. Some are more affected than others, but we all carry pieces of these issues around with us. I wanted those visible but surrounded by the beauty of the floral beadwork, a visual representation of our culture and heritage. A foundation for grounding us as we maneuver forward through the pain and healing of these issues. Often times I add pollinators to my work, this hat being no exception. As a gardener, I see the value and role the pollinators play in growing our food. Having that connection to the land is just as important in keeping our mind and body strong so we can be healthy humans. All these things swirling on the surface, pinging us from the outside, we need to remember to keep a good mind, stay peaceful, centered, well... Sgë:nö', which is why under the brim, just above the eyes, I beaded for the wearer to see, in white (for peace), Sgë:nö'. So whoever wears the hat can keep that peace going forward wherever their path shall lead.

Artist Bio:

Samantha Jacobs is a Seneca artist of the Turtle clan from the Cattaraugus Territory. As a child, she learned beadwork from her mother Mary Jacobs. Samantha is known for her beaded moccasins and also does quillwork, moose & caribou hair tufting. She is a member of the Native Roots Artists Guild. Samantha works on her home territory where she shares her knowledge as a community educator.

Artist Statement:

Samantha Jacobs is a full-time artist working in diverse arts including beadwork, tufting, traditional clothing & jewelry. She works on her pieces because she finds it relaxing and enjoys the process of creating. Whether she is working with beads or making a mess with corn husk or moose hair, her art is free form and each piece is organic in its growth. Samantha makes art as a way to reflect the world around her in a self expressive visually appealing way. Floral designs and heading techniques are passed down by my great grandmother. The teardrop gems represent the grief and trauma that our grandparents and loved ones endured at the hands of the residential school system. Orange represents those who have survived and the ones who never made it home. The Fire Color's represent the fire ignited by standing together to honour and support the generations affected by the unforgettable acts of genocide.

Born in 1978 in California. And lived in a lot of places in the US. Since my father was in the army. I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil up. I'm Apache and papago both of new Mexico. Growing up my great grandmother never allowed us to claim our heritage. Later in life I realized that boarding schools were taking kids until 1996. We knew about our background though through both of my grandmothers. I danced at Powwows since I was 14 and had my coming out ceremony in 2019. I danced until my back injury affected my balance and recently diagnosed with Lupus. I've been doing more artwork and beadwork as my medicine. It helps me feel more productive.

I am the daughter of Q w ikilag (meaning high standing in the Bighouse, given to her from James Charles King on behalf of Sarah Ester Johnson, Nelson), Therise Leroux, Johnson, Blomberg and Clifford Blomberg. I am the granddaughter of Irene Blomberg, Marie Bear and Arthur Blomberg. I am Woodland Bear Néhiyaw (Cree) and Norwegian Sweden Jewish from my father and French and Scottish from my spirit mother. I am a first generation residential school survivor.

I also walk with teachings gifted from my Kwikwasut'inuxw Haxwa'mis brother, ?i?alqumlilas (meaning Welcoming face, given to him by James Charles King aka Jimmy King) Glen Johnson from Gilford Island.

As a young womxn working on my Masters in Indigenous Specialization, I work with and walk alongside youth, elders, knowledge holders, and individuals in community witnessing their reconnection to culture through art/design and ceremonial practices. Artist Bio/Statement:

Danielle Swift's work explores the human body and communicates the dichotomy of our natural environment and human constructs, creation and destruction, and the fragility and strength represented in both the delicate and resilient mix of materials (wood, dirt, beeswax, paper, jute, copper, bronze, plaster, concrete, resin, etc), which makes the observer feel the duality of an emotional and cerebral connection. Having established an affinity for concrete as her main medium, Swift's drawn to how the material can be innovatively manipulated in a way that works aesthetically and is uniquely individual.

Swift's sculptures have appeared in numerous local exhibits, most notably, ART Vancouver art fair; East Vancouver's HFA Contemporary gallery, Deconstruction and the Space Between; Granville Island's Becker Galleries; Vancouver's Windsor Gallery, and The ACT Art Gallery in Maple Ridge. The Creator's Shelf is a partnership effort of Issac Two White Feather from Saugeen First Nation and Settler Ally Lori Gentle Eagle from Niagara Falls. Crafting helps us to open our hearts, calm our minds, move our bodies and connect us to spirit. It began as just another healthy distraction that supported Two White Feather's efforts to manage symptoms of mental health and addictive behaviours resulting from colonial oppression and multi-generational trauma. Much like his Father, Issac has a particular interest in working with his hands and building with wood. Lori fondly remembers times in her childhood spent with her Grandmother, making dolls with dried apples or embroidering table cloths with blessings left behind by those who gathered together during holiday meals each year. Aaniin [Hello], my name is Rikki Singleton, and my small business is @Riksworks. I am an urban Indigenous artist (Ojibway and Cree) currently living in Mississauga and am from the Migisi Sahgaigan [Eagle Lake] First Nation, in Treaty 3 Territory. Learning to bead, start a small business, and share my craft and skills has been a wonderful journey!
