Description/Inspiration:

Artist was challenged by a peer to "work larger." In an attempt to meet this challenge and still pay homage to the artist's roots in ledger art, the treaty 7 documents of 1877 were recreated on the canvas. Then the large male iinii (bull American plains bison) was added. Originally Ninastako (Chief Mountain) and its surrounding ranges were to be included but proved to be too much for the composition. Instead, Blackfoot pictograms depicting a mountain range were incorporated into the background. Traditionally these images would appear above the earth line at the bottom of the page but were added along with prominent star constellations behind the text of the document to give a different sense of depth.

Description/Inspiration:
Project GOAT (Global Offensive Against Trafficking) utilized specially designed goat sculptures to raise money and awareness to combat human trafficking. This goat was originally intended to be orange with Blackfeet pictograms depicting the remains of every child recovered from school properties to date. After a conversation with a close friend of the artist, the concept changed from a memorial to a victory statement-a winter count for not just the victims but the survivors. The pictograms in the blue area of the goat represent the survivors of the residential school era. These are the elders who kept the language and culture alive when governments and the church worked so hard to eradicate them. The pictograms in red, below the earth line represent those who did not come home. One flank of the goat depicts the members of the Dream Catcher Foundation Council. The Council are the quintessential example of colonization's failure to "kill the Indian and save the man." These are pro athletes, supermodels, actors, musicians, artists, and influencers. You can't help but see them. Undeniable proof that Indigenous people are still here and gaining momentum every day. The other flank tells the story of Native America through the artist's family. Panning down the side, you can see how within a generation of being removed from the reservation tradition gave way to the fashion of the time. The artist shows his grandmother Agnes Kellerher and Grandfather Jimmy Big Spring as they would have appeared in the 1930s. His grandmother Helen and uncle "Smokey" in the 1950s, and his mother in the 1960's. His uncle William "Jimmy" Kellerher, a Vietnam veteran, represents the native veterans. In 1978, Natives were again allowed to practice their culture openly. This can be observed in traditional attire appearing again with the artists extended family. His cousin Deborah Red Shirt, and adopted brother and sister, Jesse DesRosier and Tillie Torpey. Blackfoot Artist Terrance Guardipee Last Gun in his elk tooth necklace helped to inspire and teach Mr. Marks through the years. The story could not be complete without the support of the artists wife, who stands next to the Skyway bridge representing Florida, and the artists heart. To the right of the skyway is Chief Mountain and a Pikuni camp, representing Blackfeet Country and the spirit of the artist. Between these two is a bull bison-the artist himself walking in two worlds. Displayed on the goat are the north star and big dipper, along with the red hand representing Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-spirit People. Even the eyes are slightly different, with a nod to Napi. The goat is a representation of the perseverance of Native America. It symbolizes colonial failure to erase Indigenous peoples. In every way this goat says to the world: "We are still here."

Description/Inspiration:

Portrait of Kainai actor, stuntman, and activist Eugene Brave Rock. Mr. Brave Rock and the artist have had a connection for several years and Eugene has been the subject of several works by Mr. Marks. For this event, the artist recreated an image of Brave Rock atop his horse. The viewer can decide whether the rider is approaching from a blazing sunrise out of a fog, or traversing a dusty, red stone canyon. Brave Rock titled this piece Oh'kitopi, The Blackfoot phrase for "rider." Additionally, this piece has been signed by the "Wonder Woman" and "Dark Winds" star (See Attached Video Below) as well as the artist.

Portrait of Kainai (Blood Tribe) warrior Imitaapooka (Dog Child), one of the artists ancestors. An example of how art has connected the artist with his history and family, researching this painting showed images of a man named Dog Child in front of a lodge with a native woman presumed to be his wife. The man is adorned in Royal Canadian Mounted Police attire carrying a white gripped revolver and holding a samurai sword. This image states Dog Child going by the name "Winnipeg Jack," and describes a tracker for the RCMP who located horse and cattle thieves for the Canadian Government. Members of the artist's family report that Winnipeg Jack and Imitaapooka are in fact, not the same person. The mystery continues as to who "Winnipeg Jack" was, and how he came to be in possession of a samurai sword in Canada during the late 19th Century.

Robert Martinez was born in Wyoming on the Wind River Reservation in the small city of Riverton. He grew up a part of many different cultures as his lineage is Spanish, Mexican, Scotts Irish, French Canadian and Northern Arapaho. He graduated Riverton High School at 17 and through a scholarship, attended the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts specializing in Painting & Drawing and minoring in sculpture, in 3 years and at age 19, becoming the Youngest Native American to graduate from RMCAD at that time.

As he was brought up in the center of the reservation, his native heritage remains a constant inspiration and source of ideas for his work. Much of Robert's current work uses the historical imagery, myth's and stories of the West & Arapaho Culture combined with modern themes to create images that have a statement on the issues of today. I am Jimmy Dean Horn jr, a Chickasaw artist. I draw, paint, print and create in just about anyway I can. My recent series "The One That Sits Above" explores what it means to be a white passing Native American in a society built on entitlement, bent on destroying itself and everything with it. I grew up in a military family detached from the culture, the past decade I have been learning and unlearning as I explore a culture I was denied. Each of the pieces within this series (20 in total, 10 fullsize 27x50", 10 portrait 18x24") touches on a different part of that narrative.
My process is a nontraditional form of printmaking. My intaglio plates are etched on scrap plexiglas sourced from a local frame trashcan, my block prints are on lino, gym mats, and even traffic cones. I do this in hopes to keep my carbon foot print low while I explore off the beaten path. My pieces are all printed by hand, I do not use a press. Each piece is a one off print, I use printmaking a the medium to create art not as a tool for mass production of works. The elements used with the pieces are often times repeated in various pieces, but used in a way that changes the meaning of that element. ie, the flaming world can be just that in one piece, while the next it is a warbonnet. This is achieved by cropping, color, or placement.

I love to explore and celebrate southern native representation. This painting is titled "Tonantzin" which translates to "Our scared mother" in the Náhuatl language. It's inspired by a combination of elements from Coatlicue Tonantzin and La Virgen De Guadalupe to shed a light and pay homage to an Indigenous Goddess and our ancestors through fine art.

Artist Bio/Statement:

I explore inclusive beauty through vibrant portraits to empower women. I draw inspiration from a combination of my Native ancestry and representation. I theorize my love for bold color is an innate connection to my Indigenous roots. My art is an observation of culture and popular iconography. I am fascinated that an image can capture the attention of the masses. It connects us regardless of race, ethnicity, age or socioeconomic status. Ayala is a visual artist and painter based in NYC and the Midwest. Classically trained in fine art, she holds a BFA from San Francisco's California College of Art. A Colombian- American of Indigenous ancestry, themes in her work embrace southern native representation and inclusive beauty to empower women. Joeseph Arnoux (Piikani/Sp'q'n'i) works diligently and steadily in Albuquerque, NM as a teaching artist, cyclist mentor, and muralist. Originally born in Spokane, WA and raised in Holland, MI, he moved to the South West in 2010. He currently attends Institute of American Indian Arts, where he studies Studio/Fine Arts and mentors with Native American Community Academy. Shelley Patrick, Mvskoke, is a visual artist whose work includes using Southeastern Indigenous designs that reflect her cultural heritage. She creates works in mixed media paintings and sculpture, fashion design, installation and mural art, and graphic design. My 2022 painting, Nvfketv-nafkv (Drummer), is an acrylic piece done on a 24" x 20" stretched canvas. It depicts the drummers and singers during a nighttime ceremony. The drummers are lit by the glow of the ceremonial fire as they sing for the dancers. The drummers are positioned at the edge of the ceremonial square ground's dance area.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Johnnie Lee Diacon is an enrolled member of the Mvskoke (Creek) Nation of Oklahoma, the Raprakko Etvlwa (Thlopthlocco Tribal Town), and he is Ecovlke (Deer Clan). Johnnie was born in Okemah, Oklahoma to Margaret Harjochee (Creek) and Cecil Iron on January 8, 1963, and he now resides in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is married to Nikki Stephens Diacon and is the father of five children; Mika, Chrissa (deceased), Melissa, Annabelle (deceased), and Emerson. He also has two grandchildren; Mai-Lin and Makoto.

Most of Johnnie's work is done on gessoed board or stretched canvas using either acrylics or oils. These works often depict some of the secular life ways of modern Native Americans and due to the artist's involvement with the American Indian Movement and recently with Idle No More and the No DAPL (Dakota Access Pipeline) movement, can often be political in nature. Both of his styles of painting often focus on his people the Mvskoke (Creek). In a quote from Patrick D. Lester's & The Biological Directory of Native American Painters & Johnnie is quoted as saying, & I feel comfortable with both flat and contemporary styles. In my contemporary works I usually have a traditional theme.& He has also been quoted as saying, & By the honest portrayal of my people, I hope to break some of the stereotypes that many people have when they think about Indians. In addition to painting and other two-dimensional forms, Johnnie has done beadwork and some three-dimensional assemblage works.

Ariel Williams is a contemporary Indigenous artist from Walpole Island First Nation (Bkejwanong Territory), who graduated in 2019 from the Fine Art program at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Canada. Williams mainly works in acrylic paint exploring the concept of creating surreal illusive worlds and breaking away from the stereotypical idea of what indigenous art should look like. Her work usually consists of varying scale, vibrant or dark colours, lines, monoliths, and negative space. Taking inspiration from various artists, western art, and imagination. Williams, creates atmospheric paintings that draw in the viewer.

"With this body of work, I was continuing to explore the idea of creating a surreal western landscape from imagination, rather than using real life as a reference. It's a series of works I've been working on for about a year now. The original is on display on art walk at a local college that is on a 4 ft by 8 ft panel. I completed it in 2021 with spray paint and oil paint. "Connected " is a display of both Native American and American pride. That shows a young woman with roots in both worlds and has connections to both. The MMIW representation shows a growing problem for young native women and in American. I wanted to show that the problem is connected in both worlds. I wanted to bring to light that beauty and pain live together inside of young native women every where and there's power inside all them. That they have both worlds to help them both American and Tribal. This is a 1 of 2 giclee print the other is in my home and not for sale and no other prints are available. It's a hand torn giclee print on archival paper.

Showing that young women can be warriors and posses power that runs through their veins. Most Native American cultures have war bonnets that show they are strong smart and and willing to fight. In the painting I show a young woman willing and experienced to fight the growing MMIW problem. She adorns a war bonnet to show she has fought before and the faded red hands are battles she over come and looks ahead to the next. To fight not just for herself but others and show the ways to overcome anything. To face a challenge head on is a power that everyone has inside them and sometimes it just takes some one to show you the way. Beauty isn't a sign of weakness and there's no such thing as a weaker sex Women are strong Warriors and they possess power way beyond and society needs to see that.

Born in 1986, He was raised with a strong traditional foundation and continues to maintain indigenous ways of prayer and philosophy that is evident through his art. No-Sun grew up on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho and the Boise Forte Reservation in northern Minnesota. Traveling back and forth to his maternal and paternal homelands is how the young artist began to expand his mind and see things from an alternate perspective. No-Sun has been quoted as saying, "being exposed to different cultures at an early age made me appreciate and love all my people because we are connected to the same source, we all fight the same war and share the same struggle." The source is our ceremony and the struggle that is shared between all native people are issues of identity, poverty, degradation of indigenous culture, and land. The war is the ways in which native people fight against these issues, today we fight using education, legislation, music, art, and many other solutions. No-Sun says, "art for me was a way to combat the negative aspects of reservation life because a lot of things are out of your control at a young age, and art was something I could control, it eased my anxiety and gave me an outlet for my energy."

Artist Bio/Statement:

My current practice as a visual artist works to both center and reclaim my own personal narrative regarding the processes of navigating mental health, cultural identity, and reclamation of space as an Indigenous woman. My body of work primarily consists of acrylic on canvas self-portraits and highlight the complexities of engaging in ancient cultural practices as a Blackfeet woman in 2022. Through my portrait paintings I reclaim a sense of autonomy and agency over my own representation and narrative as a young Blackfeet woman who grew up living out our traditional way of life. There is a unique responsibility and power specific to Blackfoot women that I work to showcase in my paintings. My work reminds Blackfoot women, girls, and Aa'woowaakii (Two-Spirit individuals) that we are more than this inflicted extraction and intergenerational trauma that we face. Prior to colonization and today, we continue to hold pivotal roles in our community that can only be fulfilled by our unique gifts and knowledge. We are still rich in resiliency and these cultural ways of being, we deserve to have space held for us where our voices can be centered, and our beauty can be celebrated. I work to achieve this through my artwork that visually reflects this experience.

Artist Bio/Statement:
Ikerson Hopper is an Onondaga Nation based artist who specializes in traditional customized works in various mediums. His artistic expression includes graphic design, porcupine quillwork, beadwork, woodcarving, tattoo and apparel design.

Ikerson loves creating one of a kind pieces, very rarely replicating a piece, keeping nearly everything he designs a one of a kind. He hopes to give insight into the Onondaga culture through his many art forms. As an inherent extension of his work, Ikerson passes along a sense of pride to be Ongwehonweh for future seven generations.

He holds a bachelors degree in graphic design from the University of Adelphi, and has recently begun his career as a full-time artist after years of traveling and playing lacrosse.

Ken Fury (Kenneth Marez Jr.) works in multiple mediums, including painting, jewelry, music, dance, poetry, photography, and filmmaking. Fury lives in New York City and grew up in Pueblo, Colorado, and is of Nuevomexicano and Indigenous Genízaro descent from southern Colorado and New Mexico. His work explores the polarities of existence-creation and destruction-and the relationship between humans and nature. His art expands on multi-dimensional figurations, abstractions, and spaces derived from his dreams, subconscious, and life experiences. Love, mortality, transformation, eroticism, spirituality, and the ongoing effects of colonization permeate Fury's body of work.

The meaning behind this painting is to bring awareness to sex trafficking and to our murdered and missing indigenous women. The painting was painted to look like the stained glass in the church and Tekakwitha as representative of all indigenous women as elevated to status of a saint, she represents all indigenous women in the sight of our Creator, High and lofty, Holy and beloved.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Born and raised on the Peepeekisis Cree Nation, Southern Saskatchewan in the Treaty Four area of southern Saskatchewan. I am Cree/ Saulteux and German blood. My family consisted of Treat four Chief signatories ( Chief Okanese) and leaders whom shaped and lead the way for our family on many levels. My parents were strong believers in education and business and taught us the value of hard work and determination. Both my parents were residential school survivors and I am a Dayschool survivor of the Peepeeksis Dayschool on our reserve. I endured many abuses and hardship growing up on the reserve. Poverty, isolation, addictions and violence consisted of my early years. My parents having been survivors, pulled themselves out of the cycle and became successful business and community leaders. This allowed our family to have a better quality of life.

My Mother was a social worker having been educated and worked with the provincial government. Her path I would follow. I wanted justice and watching her fight for families and social injustice had a profound impact on my path. My Father would become headman for our family on the reserve. It carried a role in the council on our reserve. He was one of many leaders in our family. My grandfather was chief for many years, as well as Uncles and Aunts would carry the title of Chief, Headman and leaders in leading Indigenous organizations even today.

Truth and Reconciliation is my passion as a result. To empower the voices of those still in the cycle and victims of the colonist system we had had to live in. To give a voice for the children. To reunite families and bring healing to communities. To work and heal side by side with our non-indigenous brothers and sisters on the path for reconciliation and Truth.

The only way for a community to thrive, for true healing to start, is to walk side by side and accept our differences. To learn of our journeys and to reconcile past hurts by educating and celebrating our diversity. My passion is to bring hope and community together in breaking free of systems that are broken and take ownership in empowering the family to make decisions for themselves in the best interest of their children.

The Seven Grandfather teachings teach us this. They are the principle of character that the Anishinaabe people taught to live by: Love respect, Bravery, Truth, Honesty, Humility and Wisdom. As a fellow Indigenous women, I stand by my Brothers and Sisters in acknowledgement of the land I am privileged to live and work on. The Unceded Algonquin Territory.

Artist Bio:

Soni Lopez-Chavez was born in Cuitzeo de Abasolo in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. A first generation immigrant, she immigrated to the United States with her family as a child, ultimately settling in the border region of San Diego, California. Professionally, Soni worked as an acrylic painter and a muralist while also working as a devoted preschool teacher. Outside of the classroom, she dedicated most of her time curating group art shows in San Diego's vibrant local art scene. Pulling from her own Chichimeca heritage and lived experience as a first-generation immigrant, Soni's art covers a wide variety of different topics and causes. All revolving around the key theme of empowering marginalized communities and raising awareness for people of color. Her art is manifested with the intention of bringing awareness to the issues and communities around her that she believes need more support and representation. Soni's art commonly grapples with issues such Indigenous sovereignty and the uplifting indigenous communities, immigration rights, family separation, the struggles of street vendors, the Black Lives Matter movement, mental health awareness, and LGBTQ+ issues among others. Soni's work is an accumulation of all her life experiences. A representation of her Indigenous ancestry, her life lived back and forth between two nations. As well as the desire not only to bring awareness to issues through their art, but use her platform to counter negative, preconceived stereotypes, and to empower historically marginalized communities.

Mallery Quetawki is from the rural Pueblo of Zuni in western New Mexico. She is the mother of two and shares residence in both Albuquerque and Zuni Pueblo. She received her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Art studio in the summer of 2009 from UNM-ABQ. She is currently the Artist-in-Residence with the Community Environmental Health Program at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy. Mallery has used art to translate scientific ideas, health impacts and research on uranium mines that are currently undergoing study in several Indigenous communities. Her work has been featured on National Institutes of Health websites and published in peer-reviewed journals on environmental health and academic medicine. Her painting entitled, "Our Microflora" is on permanent display at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Biological Engineering. Mallery has a large-scale mural titled, "Morning Prayer", on permanent display at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center which depicts the history of the Zuni People from Creation to modern times. Her oil painting symbolizing the ties between the Grand Canyon and Zuni culture is part of a traveling collaboration called the Zuni Map Art Project. The collaborative set of art has been displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, NY and other museums and galleries in the US. Other noted works include a 12-piece pastel and ink set entitled "What Makes a Zuni?" on permanent display at the Zuni IHS in Blackrock, NM and a mural painted at the Ho'n A:wan Park in Zuni Pueblo September 2018. Mallery's recent work was part of an interactive Google Doodle that kicked off Native American Heritage Month on November 1, 2021.

Anthony Deiter - Plains Cree/Saulteaux is a contemporary storyteller, employing CG, computer technologies and paintings to communicate the story of North America's Aboriginal people through references to his own history. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Cinematic Arts, Gaming and Virtual environments at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Description/Inspiration:

As someone who endured domestic violence, I want to encourage others to share their stories of survival and recovery. The reflected figures call each other as the background reveals the impact and inner turmoil of these experiences. The red handprints are seemingly scattered and vary in transparency, yet their marks remain but do not define the figures. Through the cacophony of doubt and self-reflection, there is healing and strength if only they awaken.

Monica Rickert-Bolter is a Chicago-based visual artist and journalist of Potawatomi, Black, and German descent. Her artwork consists of traditional mediums, such as charcoals and pastels, graphic design, and digital coloring to create expressive characters and tell their diverse stories. After receiving her undergrad in Media Arts and Animation, Monica became more involved with Native nonprofits, where she combined her love of art and education to develop programs and resources for children. She worked with Chicago Public Schools to create a new interdisciplinary Latino and Latin American Studies curriculum incorporating Indigenous history and contributions. Passionate about storytelling through art and writing, she advocates for cultural representation in any project she undertakes and serves as a consultant for various institutions and organizations, like The Field Museum and the Terra Foundation for American

The translucent circular designs mimic rotating gears while incorporating sustainable imagery with intangible themes that coincide with sovereignty. The piece combines hand-drawn dry pastels on black paper with digital graphics and vectorized circular patterns that acknowledge Native peoples from around Turtle Island (North America Continent), Native Hawaiians, and Samoans. The title derives from the Potawatomi language, while the vibrant background pays homage to Anishinaabe sun and moon patterns.

This is a cedar lined box. My inspiration for this box is reminiscent of dancers that I saw this summer at the Six Nations and Rama Powwows. It would be a wonderful box to hold precious items. This would be great to hold regalia in the presence of cedar medicine. I really enjoyed painting this box, the smell of the cedar made me feel like my ancestors were with me. I painted this while I thought good things and I've smudged it.

With very little connection to their Korean heritage and being raised alongside their adopted Mexican/Nahuatl family, much of early life was full of cultural richness and contrasts. Stella Nall is a multimedia artist and poet from Bozeman, and a First Descendant of the Apsáalooke Tribe. She graduated from the University of Montana in 2020 with a BFA in Printmaking, a BA in Psychology and a minor in Art History and Criticism. She now lives and works in Missoula, where she is represented by Radius Gallery. Her work lives in murals across Montana, as well as in numerous public and private collections, including The Montana Museum of Art and Culture, the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian, and The Institute of American Indian Arts Museum of Contemporary Native Arts.

Artist Statement:

As an artist I am driven by three primary forces: to process my experiences, to connect with others, and to advocate for change. I love to use vibrant colors to illustrate whimsical, sweet, imaginary creatures which tell a story. Some of the imagery that I use is drawn from tradition, and some I developed to speak to my own experiences. I utilize imagined creatures to discuss a wide variety of topics including love, grief, joy and identity.

I am Apsáalooke, and as a child my mother first exposed me to art through her beadwork. The stitches, palettes and patterns she used, as well as those of our tribe, still influence my work today. Media is an important aspect of my work. I combine beadwork with other two dimensional forms of art making such as printmaking, painting, and illustration with the intention of challenging existing stereotypes and expectations viewers may hold about what Indigenous art should look like.

Created in 2022 this bee was created from a reference photo I took of it in my flower garden. My flower garden is special to me as it was my way of coping with COVID-19 and it provided me a way to grow and nourish living beings from the flowers, bees, hummingbirds, and other small creatures. The flower garden is right outside our bedroom window, and I always take a peek each morning to check on the garden. I love seeing pollinators out in my garden just like this bee. The designs I use are based on traditional woodland designs of the great lake tribes. This painting is a small reminder that we are all connected to each other from plants, insects, animals, and human beings.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Amber L. DuBoise-Shepherd depicts contemporary Native American narratives based on her family heritage of Navajo, Sac & Fox, and Prairie Band Potawatomi. Her Navajo clans are Red House & Near Water People Clan, and her Sac & Fox clan is Wolf. Her mixed media pieces and oil paintings reference an illustrative quality. She has an Associates of Art from Seminole State College and completed her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Spring 2016 at Oklahoma State University. She was accepted into Momentum March 2017, March 2019, and March 2020 in Oklahoma that was sponsored by the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition. She won Best of Show in 2016, 1 st Place in 2017, and 1 st , 2 nd , and Judges Choice Award in 2018, and Best of Show in 2019 in her categories for the Cushing, OK Native American Heritage Festival Juried Art Show and Native Fest Juried Art Show. At the end of 2020 she won Grand Prize and Runner up for IMAGEN Art Competition: "Native Traditions is Medicine: Resilience and Native Lifeways during COVID-19". DuBoise-Shepherd was also one of two selected for the first ever Red Earth's Emerging Artist Award in 2018 by the Red Earth board for her body of work. She has exhibited Southern Plains Indian Museum in Anadarko, OK consisted of her most recent body of work in her exhibition Tradition Through Modern Eyes 2018. She had a solo exhibition at the Jacobson Native Art Center from April-May 2019. In 2020 she exhibited at the TAC Gallery in Tulsa, OK for her exhibition Living on the Native Oklahoma Reservation, as well as being accepted into the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition Exhibition Concept/Survey at the Ahha Gallery in Tulsa, OK. DuBoise- Shepherd exhibited work at the Ahha Gallery in July 2020 for the Re/Convening exhibition in Tulsa, OK, Azhwakwa: Contemporary Anishinaabe Art exhibition at the Jacobson Native Art Center in Norman, OK in August 2020, and Speak: Speak While You Can exhibition at Living Arts in Tulsa, OK.

She has increasingly been showing at different markets to sell and show her work to the public and was accepted in the Santa Fe Indian Market August of 2018 and 2019, which is the biggest Native American arts market in the world, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She attended the Artesian Native Art Market in Sulphur, OK, and The Cherokee Art Market in Catoossa, OK for the first time in 2019. She is married and currently lives in her hometown of Shawnee, OK with her husband Josh Shepherd.

Born in 1978 in California. And lived in a lot of places in the US. Since my father was in the army. I've been drawing since I could hold a pencil up. I'm Apache and papago both of new Mexico. Growing up my great grandmother never allowed us to claim our heritage. Later in life I realized that boarding schools were taking kids until 1996. We knew about our background though through both of my grandmothers. I danced at Powwows since I was 14 and had my coming out ceremony in 2019. I danced until my back injury affected my balance and recently diagnosed with Lupus. I've been doing more artwork and beadwork as my medicine. It helps me feel more productive.

I am the daughter of Q w ikilag (meaning high standing in the Bighouse, given to her from James Charles King on behalf of Sarah Ester Johnson, Nelson), Therise Leroux, Johnson, Blomberg and Clifford Blomberg. I am the granddaughter of Irene Blomberg, Marie Bear and Arthur Blomberg. I am Woodland Bear Néhiyaw (Cree) and Norwegian Sweden Jewish from my father and French and Scottish from my spirit mother. I am a first generation residential school survivor.

I also walk with teachings gifted from my Kwikwasut'inuxw Haxwa'mis brother, ?i?alqumlilas (meaning Welcoming face, given to him by James Charles King aka Jimmy King) Glen Johnson from Gilford Island.

As a young womxn working on my Masters in Indigenous Specialization, I work with and walk alongside youth, elders, knowledge holders, and individuals in community witnessing their reconnection to culture through art/design and ceremonial practices. Creating designs from dreams, visions, ceremony, blood memory, my grandmothers, and spirit.

Each creation is made with love and healing medicine gifted from dreams, visions, ceremony, blood memory, my grandmothers, and spirit. One bead, brush stroke, and stitch at a time I weave together designs messages from my gifted teachings. Each design comes with a message and story of where the materials came from.

Description/Inspiration:

Story: The Thunderbird opens his eyes to look upon the Earth. Lighting flashes, seeking the Earth as She seeks him in the sky. Their union brings life to parched and broken soil and the greening of the ground begins again.

My Elder is Cree and a good teacher. He comes from the Thunderchild Reserve in Saskatchewan and taught me a little bit what he's learned growing up around Thunderbirds. When the sound of thunder can be heard, this is the great Thunderbeings moving their wings. When they open their eyes, the lightning escapes from them and lights up the skies, charges the air and ignites growth on our Mother the Earth. We are taught to hold their power in high regard, never to be careless with Thunder medicine (or any medicine). One day I didn't heed that lesson and scolded the Thunderbirds for something I'd just heard on the radio that involved a thunderstorm and the death of a family. Immediately as my final word rolled off my lips there was a great crack about 100 feet away from me and lightning hit the ground on a ½ constructed bridge nearby. I was blinded. Stones exploded everywhere. The hairs on my body stood up and my skin was tingling. I was instantly and sufficiently humbled. After emptying the entire contents of my tobacco pouch on the ground along with an abundance of prayer and a food offering from my lunch kit, I got in my car and drove home.

This piece was inspired by the battle for clean drinking water that took place at Standing Rock, North Dakota in a stand that began on December 1, 2016. The fight for the right to clean water continues to happen all over the world today. Water truly is life. In this work, I didn't need to create the story - it was already being written by Water Protectors south of us who were standing up for the right to enjoy what Mother Earth and the Star Nation has freely provided for us in abundance. I am proud to be alive at a time when the world is waking up to the wisdom of walking in beauty on this benevolent and beautiful planet. The alarm is certainly sounding and I hope more people wake up quickly.

Gordon Wesley- is passionate about bringing the life of the wild into a still picture, where he can always have them as memories from his wildlife experiences. He is a proud Nakoda Stoney from the Bighorn Reserve, where he was inspired to create life on canvas. Living in a quiet reserve in the mountains, Gordon can easily maintain the focus and concentrate on the essence of bringing the wildlife of the Rockies to the canvas. As a child, Gordon loved to be outdoors and watching the animals that inhabit his local geography. He was always curious about them and enjoyed their natural beauty. Gordon passion for nature comes from the desire to capture the spirit of the wild in art. not only from my native ancestry, but also from a rural Kansas upbringing. I myself am a collage of cultures. I react by collaging materials from my ancestors, contemporary community, and personal life experiences. My studio is a flux of mediums and objects in constant conversation: a gouache painting is printed on fabric, which is collaged, then informs a piece of wearable art, or inspires the composition of a new gouache painting. Nothing is off-limits to being repurposed and reimagined.
My research of traditional arts brings imagery abstracted from moccasin beading patterns into my paintings. Some works utilize actual beading and sewing. Graphic design, fine art, and craft are all woven together in my studio, at times literally. Cultivating the joy that arises from cultural differences gives hope for future tribes, countries, and personal communities.

Being native in the city is hard. Having to be in an institution where the majority of the school is white, it's easy to feel like i don't belong and harder to feel like i am valid. But when i put on the smallest accessory such as my beaded earrings, i feel confident and proud to show off who i am in the smallest way. That is why i named this piece "almost ready" because with out my beaded possessions, i am not ready to conquer the day. The Creator's Shelf is a partnership effort of Issac Two White Feather from Saugeen First Nation and Settler Ally Lori Gentle Eagle from Niagara Falls. Crafting helps us to open our hearts, calm our minds, move our bodies and connect us to spirit. It began as just another healthy distraction that supported Two White Feather's efforts to manage symptoms of mental health and addictive behaviours resulting from colonial oppression and multi-generational trauma. Much like his Father, Issac has a particular interest in working with his hands and building with wood. Lori fondly remembers times in her childhood spent with her Grandmother, making dolls with dried apples or embroidering table cloths with blessings left behind by those who gathered together during holiday meals each year. From her work as a Counsellor / Advocate and Soul Worker / Circle Facilitator, she knows the healing value of creative expression. On The Creator's Shelf, you will find items infused with spirit from Indigenous and Wise Woman (Goddess) traditions. I'm an Anishinaabe artist who was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Drawing was a hobby for me as I was growing up.When I turned 12, I had a desire to further develop my art skills and style. I am thinking of a career in fine arts. Realism, modern art, cubism, abstract and many other art styles is what influences, inspires my art. Years later, I am doing what I love. Sammy is of Pascua Yaqui, Purépecha, German, and Sicilian lineage. She is the founder of Simply Art by Sammy, established in 2020. Born and raised in San Diego, California she first began her art journey when she was a young child but as she grew, so did her artwork along with the meaning behind it. A large focal point with her paintings is the sky, primarily sunrises and sunsets, and the surrounding landscapes. She is drawn to the sky because each morning and evening, the colors are never the same. She is strength, confidence and a fierce woman to be reckoned with but first and foremost she protects our freshwater areas. She is beautiful and dangerous who can lure those she likes to her freshwater ponds, have her way with them and then discard them when she?s finished.

Tara Keanuenue Gumapac is a Kanaka Maoli Artist that lives in He'eia, O'ahu. She graduated with a Bachelors in Studio Art in 2008 and a Masters in Education in Teaching in the Ho'okulaiwi Program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa in 2010. Tara is an alumni in the HOEA Program in Waimea, Hawai'i; an alumni of the 2017 ILI - Intercultural Leadership Institute; a 2017 participant of the "Tears of DukwibahL: Gathering of International Indigenous Visual Artists of the Pacific Rim" and a 2018 WESTAF Emerging Leaders of Color alumni and the Fine Arts Department Head at Kal'heo High School. She is currently a 2022 First Peoples Fund Fellow for the Artist in Business Leadership.

I remember one day while as I was working I had a huge moment of sadness, just out of nowhere. I felt a wave of grief for my home and my people. I work off the rez and away from my home for a majority of my time and I painted this piece as I reminder that my home will always there and to remember it as I go forward with my work.
