Description/Inspiration:

Artist was challenged by a peer to "work larger." In an attempt to meet this challenge and still pay homage to the artist's roots in ledger art, the treaty 7 documents of 1877 were recreated on the canvas. Then the large male iinii (bull American plains bison) was added. Originally Ninastako (Chief Mountain) and its surrounding ranges were to be included but proved to be too much for the composition. Instead, Blackfoot pictograms depicting a mountain range were incorporated into the background. Traditionally these images would appear above the earth line at the bottom of the page but were added along with prominent star constellations behind the text of the document to give a different sense of depth.

Artist Bio:

Craig Marks is a Florida Suncoast fine artist and illustrator who resides in St. Petersburg with his wife and six children. A Pikuni descendant, the cultural influence of the Blackfeet culture is evident in his body of
work. He has developed strong relationships within the Blackfoot Confederacy and has gained recognition as a ledger artist. The titles of many of his works are in the Blackfoot language, in the hopes of inviting non-native viewers into conversations that dismantle stereotypes, and address inequities still existing in the 21st Century.

Artist Statement:

The Peace Love Art Indigenous Collective is a deeply personal experience, allowing me to show express my gratitude for those who have brought me to this point in my life. As an adopted child, I was blessed with a home and people who loved me and gave me everything. Like any adopted child, I had questions about who I was, and where I came from and left me with an emptiness I had accepted as one I would have to live with.

When I found my birth family, that began to change. Eventually it would be art that opened the doors to understanding my past and finding my ancestors. Each face I paint has a story to tell. Every being depicted on my canvas or rendered on paper has honored me with sharing their story with the world before it is forgotten. Every line on paper or stroke of my brush brings life and spirit to a surface that
was once lifeless.

Description/Inspiration:

The wolf is a symbol of loyalty, strong family ties, excellent communication, education, understanding, and intelligence. The wolf is also known to some, including myself, as a messenger from Creator. During my travels over the years, wolves have shown themselves to me to warn of dangers ahead. It is both to show my gratitude and to honor, not only Creator but also His messenger that inspired the creation of this bag. The beadwork for the wolf was done entirely in my Signature modified Square stitch and is guaranteed from ever falling apart through normal wear and tear. Each bead, added one at a time, is individually sewn to each of the surrounding beads using only 100% silk thread. Using this stitch, each bead ends up with between 6 and 9 strands of thread through it. Durable and strong!

Artist Bio/Statement:

I've worked with such mediums as pencil, pen, charcoal, pastels and paints. Born for the Odawa Nation and originating from an ancestral home renowned world-wide for its beautiful beadwork and artistry, mid-way through life and working under my Odawa name of Waawaaskonenhens (Little Flower), I chose to put down my pencils and brushes to pick up a beading needle. Beading is my life's passion and picking up that needle is like opening the door into my own little world. Working in the strongest stitch possible and creating pieces that fuel the imagination bonds together intense pride in art and heritage. By modifying the strongest of all stitches, the traditional Square Stitch, to double its strength, using only 100% silk thread and natural beeswax, the result is a piece of work that will last for many generations. It is true that my first love and specialty is beading. The freedom to lay down the beading needle and pick up a file for smoothing and sizing bone and horn, or a glovers needle for sewing hide. The freedom to bring ancestral work into the future by way of contemporary designs while maintaining the quality of the traditional. With the exception of the synthetic sinew used for stringing or sewing, the traditionalist in me insists on using all natural materials while the creative individualist side of me feels the need to expand on the traditional ? the need to step outside the box ? the need to be "different". I hope I have succeeded! It is my prayer that the resulting works signify honor and respect to the ancestors in every piece.

Shelley Patrick, Mvskoke, is a visual artist whose work includes using Southeastern Indigenous designs that reflect her cultural heritage. Long ago, the Southern Utes of Colorado told of a plague that medicine men could not cure. A council gathered on the riverbank and built an enormous fire, danced and prayed for help, then fell into a deep sleep. When they woke, a spring of fragrant hot water had replaced the fire. They bathed and were healed by the springs, naming it "pah" (water) and "gosa" (boiling). In the center of this blanket design, blue hot springs rise through medallions of fire to bring peace and health.

Artist Bio:

Lindsey Thornburg was born in Great Falls, Montana. The only child of two young parents, she spent her childhood between Seattle and Montana before moving to the Aspen area for middle school and high school. She spent most of her youth traveling between family members and different schools. Throughout this period, she learned about adaptation and identity through fashion. Lindsey attended college in Santa Barbara and Design school in Los Angeles. She moved to NYC in 2003, with no interest in working for corporations, she set up shop and began selling her small dress collections on the streets of downtown. Growing up with western and Pacific Northwest roots, she was familiar with Pendleton from an early age. She envisioned modernizing their fabrications and born was her collaboration with the esteemed brand. The idea was of creative necessity. She wasn't able to find or afford any suitable winter jackets, she began wearing the blankets outside. This led to the idea that a high quality garment could be constructed from the beautiful fabrics. In 2011 Pendleton agreed to collaborate with Lindsey Thornburg. Given the legacy and the Native history Pendleton holds, Lindsey takes this collaboration very seriously and honors the privilege of working with America's finest woolen will company. Never viewing her creations as passing trends, she strives to make each garment an heirloom piece. The company has been self-funded and has grown its audience organically. All garments are considered, cut and constructed in NYC by Stacey Berry and Lindsey Thornburg.

My name is John Isaiah Pepion, and I am a Plains Indian graphic artist from the Piikani Band of the Blackfoot Confederacy. I am based out of the Blackfeet reservation in north-central Montana, where the Rocky Mountains meet the plains. I am best known for my ledger art, which is an art tradition that developed in Plains tribes: as the buffalo hide, we traditionally used for painting became scarce, Plains people were forced to adapt by making artwork on ledger paper from accounting books. I come from a family of artists, and ledger art has been in my family for hundreds of years.

Ariel Williams is a contemporary Indigenous artist from Walpole Island First Nation (Bkejwanong Territory), who graduated in 2019 from the Fine Art program at Fanshawe College in London, Ontario, Canada. Williams mainly works in acrylic paint exploring the concept of creating surreal illusive worlds and breaking away from the stereotypical idea of what indigenous art should look like. Her work usually consists of varying scale, vibrant or dark colours, lines, monoliths, and negative space. Taking inspiration from various artists, western art, and imagination. Williams, creates atmospheric paintings that draw in the viewer.

"With this body of work, I was continuing to explore the idea of creating a surreal western landscape from imagination, rather than using real life as a reference. It's a series of works I've been working on for about a year now. Only allowing myself to use a limited palette of bright, bold colours to create this imaginative atmospheric landscape that draws in the viewer. This painting is primarily about my take on Western American art. I've always had an interest in American cowboys and way they're depicted/capture within paintings. Rebecca Doxtator (she/ they) is from the Oneida Nation of the Thames community and the artist behind Otsí:tsi'designs. Cante Eagle Horse is a Denver based Artist, full-time Tattooer and new muralist with an interest in Plant Medicine and History. They're a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe in South Dakota and co-own a private tattoo studio, Two Thunders. Outside of tattooing,
they mainly focus on animals and plants, in relation to humans or depicting moments from history, and are inspired by their childhood
teachings along with climate action. Cante's work can be characterized by fine-line details, asymmetrical balance and patterns. They
incorporate elements of traditional tattoo flash and designs influenced by their culture onto gifted, found or recycled objects, using that

Artist Bio/Statement:

I explore new directions in Native American Art and Fashion, and utilize classical methods to develop a new contemporary vision of Native Art & Fashion. I strive to create new artwork that continues to the tradition of Contemporary Native Art, and pushes the boundaries of varying mediums, such as painting, holographic sculpture, poetry, and Fashion Design. I paint, I sculpt, I write, I design, I try to find the best platform to express and convey a thought and emotion. As a veteran with PTSD, I had to find myself again as an artist when I came back from overseas. I spent over 12 years in war zones, and before I deployed, I had studied art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Holland and IAIA, in Santa Fe, N.M. As the apprentice of Earl Biss, my adopted father, I was able to delve even further into classical art. Upon return to the States, I started my studio again with the hopes to express the trauma of war, and find a platform to continually express myself, externalize the trauma, and eventually, hopefully help others. As a Fashion Designer, I have always wanted to explore this platform. For me, clothes can empower a person to feel better about themselves. Fashion Design can be a symbol of empowerment, or it can be utilitarian in use, and it can bring awareness to vital issues in Indian Country. The Sky-Eagle Collection was born out of a need to be a New Warrior in the Modern World. As a Veteran I always wanted to give back to my community, and when my daughter was born I wanted to do even more. Aroud this time I found out about the Missing and Murdered Womens Crisis and I wanted to see what I could do to protect my daughter, and my Native People. I have created platforms that can bring awareness to issues, with the hopes to inspire action. As I progressed, I have looked for the root cause of these issues, and looking at the data for Native Communities, it is apparent that there is so much work to be done. Issues such as the lowest life expectancy, a lack of
access to resources such as education and healthcare, and generational trauma that is creating vulnerable communities, and the outcomes are evident. I want to do my part, and giving back is the key ethos of the Sky-Eagle Collection. For my daily work, my goal was to work for Native Communities. I earned my Masters Degree in Emergency Management and have been able to work with tribes on capability building and community resilience capabilities development.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Derek No-Sun Brown is an artist who is blessed to be carrying on ancestry from the Shoshone-Bannock, Klamath, and Anishinabe people. Born in 1986, He was raised with a strong traditional foundation and continues to maintain indigenous ways of prayer and philosophy that is evident through his art. No-Sun grew up on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Idaho and the Boise Forte Reservation in northern Minnesota. Traveling back and forth to his maternal and paternal homelands is how the young artist began to expand his mind and see things from an alternate perspective. No-Sun has been quoted as saying, "being exposed to different cultures at an early age made me appreciate and love all my people because we are connected to the same source, we all fight the same war and share the same struggle." The source is our ceremony and the struggle that is shared between all native people are issues of identity, poverty, degradation of indigenous culture, and land. The war is the ways in which native people fight against these issues, today we fight using education, legislation, music, art, and many other solutions. No-Sun says, "art for me was a way to combat the negative aspects of reservation life because a lot of things are out of your control at a young age, and art was something I could control, it eased my anxiety and gave me an outlet for my energy."

No-Sun has received his B.F.A in 2013 from the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. No-sun has also expanded his love for art, apparel and entrepreneurship into a business called War Medicine that has been growing larger and increasing the quality each year with a new storefront opening in November, 2022 in Pocatello, Idaho his home town. Currently the artist known as No-Sun is making his way into the future with a positive outlook and desire to make change for a better world. He currently lives in the Southwest with his wife and three children and works from his private studio.

I currently reside in Chandler, AZ., for 25 years. During the Pandemic in 2021, Phoenix Indian Center Culture provided a class on "How to make a RED RIBBON" host by Agnes Woodward. I learned the history of the ribbon skirts, how to make a skirt, and the meaning of the "RED RIBBON" skirt. It's now over a year later, I've entered Fashion Shows, received recognition, and flourished into a small business that is becoming noticed among many Indigenous Artists. This painting uses Zuni Pueblo symbolism to create a futuristic machine-like system where gears and circuits create a movement. This represents all Natives working at the intersections of STEM and Art (STEAM). Native American's have been gaining seats at the table in the areas of Science, Technology and Medicine and this painting is to honor that movement in sacred directions.

Artist Bio:

Mallery Quetawki is from the rural Pueblo of Zuni in western New Mexico. She is the mother of two and shares residence in both Albuquerque and Zuni Pueblo. She received her B.S. in Biology with a minor in Art studio in the summer of 2009 from UNM-ABQ. She is currently the Artist-in-Residence with the Community Environmental Health Program at the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy. Mallery has used art to translate scientific ideas, health impacts and research on uranium mines that are currently undergoing study in several Indigenous communities. Her work has been featured on National Institutes of Health websites and published in peer-reviewed journals on environmental health and academic medicine. Her painting entitled, "Our Microflora" is on permanent display at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Biological Engineering. Mallery has a large-scale mural titled, "Morning Prayer", on permanent display at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center which depicts the history of the Zuni People from Creation to modern times. Her oil painting symbolizing the ties between the Grand Canyon and Zuni culture is part of a traveling collaboration called the Zuni Map Art Project. The collaborative set of art has been displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, NY and other museums and galleries in the US. Other noted works include a 12-piece pastel and ink set entitled "What Makes a Zuni?" on permanent display at the Zuni IHS in Blackrock, NM and a mural painted at the Ho'n A:wan Park in Zuni Pueblo September 2018. Mallery's recent work was part of an interactive Google Doodle that kicked off Native American Heritage Month on November 1, 2021.

I thought about all the issues that are effecting our People and how hard it is to keep a good mind, staying strong and Sgë:nö' (Peace/Wellbeing in Seneca). I thought I could put all that in beadwork and on a hat. #EveryChildMatter, #MyBodyMyChoice, #LandBack, #MMIW are all issues that may be personal, hot button and tragic, but they affect everyone in a different manner and depth. Some are more affected than others, but we all carry pieces of these issues around with us. I wanted those visible but surrounded by the beauty of the floral beadwork, a visual representation of our culture and heritage. A foundation for grounding us as we maneuver forward through the pain and healing of these issues. Often times I add pollinators to my work, this hat being no exception. As a gardener, I see the value and role the pollinators play in growing our food. Having that connection to the land is just as important in keeping our mind and body strong so we can be healthy humans. All these things swirling on the surface, pinging us from the outside, we need to remember to keep a good mind, stay peaceful, centered, well... Sgë:nö', which is why under the brim, just above the eyes, I beaded for the wearer to see, in white (for peace), Sgë:nö'. So whoever wears the hat can keep that peace going forward wherever their path shall lead.

Artist Bio:

Samantha Jacobs is a Seneca artist of the Turtle clan from the Cattaraugus Territory. As a child, she learned beadwork from her mother Mary Jacobs. Samantha is known for her beaded moccasins and also does quillwork, moose & caribou hair tufting. She is a member of the Native Roots Artists Guild. Samantha works on her home territory where she shares her knowledge as a community educator.

Artist Statement:

Samantha Jacobs is a full-time artist working in diverse arts including beadwork, tufting, traditional clothing & jewelry. She works on her pieces because she finds it relaxing and enjoys the process of creating. Whether she is working with beads or making a mess with corn husk or moose hair, her art is free form and each piece is organic in its growth. Samantha makes art as a way to reflect the world around her in a self expressive visually appealing way. After drafting an idea, and picking my subjects, I outline lightly with a pencil of the creation, and outline with a Micron Pen. After the Micron Pen outline has been dried, I erase the pencil outline. I start coloring the base color, then begin the shadowing with a darker tone, to light tone, the process must be quickly done to get the smooth fade. The finishing process are final details on facial features, the hair strands, and any small details that would give viewers the time to appreciate.

Being an Indigenous being, we see trains of braiding on the regular at ceremonies, and at pow-wows. The young boy in the front plays with a Lego Bionicle Toy representing a warrior he hopes to be one day. Seeing that there's only one boy in this creation, boys and men should be taught and reminded of the care the women give to man and need to be protectors regardless. We have many women, who carry on many traits, lessons, that are carried on from our ancestors. When a sister, niece, auntie, mother, grandmother disappears, their lessons can't be carried on, which is another form of colonization. Stay safe, and more importantly, keep them safe!

Artist Bio/Statement:

Chad "Little Coyote" Yellowjohn comes from Shoshone Bannock/Spokaneancestral line. Chad was raised in Ione, Washington and at a young age was mute. Over the years, his imagination began to extensively blossom on paper, thus gaining a heavy interest in free hand illustration.

After graduating High School, Yellowjohn went straight to the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico to advance in his talents on becoming a professional illustrator, taking media classes and building relationships with other like minded Indigenous artists.

After having dropped out, he decided after two years to reenroll. Coming back to the school was the greatest choice he made. Yellowjohn earned his Associates in Cinematic Arts, along with a Minor in Studio Arts. Yellowjohn has plans and goals to travel and show the world his art, tell his story, and spread inspiration and awareness of the issues Indigenous people face today. He has the motive for children to feel included in the world, which is why he creates for all Indigenous People, especially for the Indigenous Children.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Danielle Swift's work explores the human body and communicates the dichotomy of our natural environment and human constructs, creation and destruction, and the fragility and strength represented in both the delicate and resilient mix of materials (wood, dirt, beeswax, paper, jute, copper, bronze, plaster, concrete, resin, etc), which makes the observer feel the duality of an emotional and cerebral connection. Having established an affinity for concrete as her main medium, Swift's drawn to how the material can be innovatively manipulated in a way that works aesthetically and is uniquely individual.

Swift's sculptures have appeared in numerous local exhibits, most notably, ART Vancouver art fair; East Vancouver's HFA Contemporary gallery, Deconstruction and the Space Between; Granville Island's Becker Galleries; Vancouver's Windsor Gallery, and The ACT Art Gallery in Maple Ridge. Basket comes complete with the 4 sacred medicines of Sage, Cedar, Sweetgrass and Tobacco (Sema) to bring cleansing,
protection, kindness and gratitude. The bark (Wiigwaasabak) that was used was respectfully stripped from a Birch Tree on Saugeen First Nation and shaped with love. A felt heart berry (Ode'imin) is attached to remind the bidder of the importance of balancing the mind, body, spirit and emotions with Mother Nature's gifts that are gathered throughout life and put in a bundle to carry and access when needed.

Artist Bio/Statement:

The Creator's Shelf is a partnership effort of Issac Two White Feather from Saugeen First Nation and Settler Ally Lori Gentle Eagle from Niagara Falls. Crafting helps us to open our hearts, calm our minds, move our bodies and connect us to spirit. It began as just another healthy distraction that supported Two White Feather's efforts to manage symptoms of mental health and addictive behaviours resulting from colonial oppression and multi-generational trauma. Much like his Father, Issac has a particular interest in working with his hands and building with wood. Lori fondly remembers times in her childhood spent with her Grandmother, making dolls with dried apples or embroidering table cloths with blessings left behind by those who gathered together during holiday meals each year. From her work as a Counsellor / Advocate and Soul Worker / Circle Facilitator, she knows the healing value of creative expression. On The Creator's Shelf, you will find items infused with spirit from Indigenous and Wise Woman (Goddess) traditions. We respectfully seek a lot of our supplies from the natural world and let Mother Earth be our guide. Boozhoo. Hi. My name is Jamie Ford. I am Ojibwe and my doodem is makwa. I am bear clan. I am an enrolled member of my tribe and reside on the reservation where I am from which is Waaswaaganing, Lac du Flambeau Wisconsin. My people are rich in traditional ways of hunting, gathering, and taking care of one another. The art that I am submitting is wearable in the form of a ribbon skirt. We wear our ribbon skirts for various reasons. But we all have one reason in common and that is the pride that we feel when we wear them. We are still here, beautiful and strong as ever.

The brand for this hat is Nu Trendz and the design inspiration was drawn from the hat itself. This was made with size 11 Japanese seed beads and size 13 permanent gold seed beads. The intricate designs and addition of the gold beads make this hat stylish and "extra". This made me think of the catchy song "Boujee Natives" by the Snotty Nose Rez Kids. This is a one size 100% cotton hat with adjustable snaps in the back.

I am a mother of two and i live in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. I moved to Oklahoma from Kansas to be closer to my heritage and teach my children our culture. In reconnecting with my traditions, i have taken up beading as a hobby. Description/Inspiration:

I remember one day while as I was working I had a huge moment of sadness, just out of nowhere. I felt a wave of grief for my home and my people. I work off the rez and away from my home for a majority of my time and I painted this piece as I reminder that my home will always there and to remember it as I go forward with my work.

Artist Bio/Statement:

Violet Duncan is Plains Cree and Taino from Kehewin Cree Nation. Touring nationally and internationally since 1991, she has performed for audiences across the United States, Canada, and Europe through work as a Native American dancer, hoop dancer, choreographer, storyteller, and author. Violet is a former "Miss Indian World", representing all Indigenous people of North America. Violet is the Creative Director of Young Warriors, where she aims to create space for programming of Indigenous performance and practice.
