Jacqueline Humphries is an abstract painter whose technique often involves applying paint in layers, then scraping it away, revealing evidence of her process. Born in 1960 in New Orleans, Humphries has had recent solo museum exhibitions at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh and the Contemporary Art Center New Orleans. Her work was also included in the 2014 Whitney Biennial and is in the permanent collections of the Whitney, the Museum of Modern Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate Modern in London, among other institutions.
Showing Our Light Through Play - for this project, each KCR friend drew and colored a self-portrait playing card and picked a number from 1-18. This project includes a custom set of playing cards and an accompanying custom framed artwork (11" x 18") with the full collection. The game consists of handing eight cards to each player, one player randomly selecting another player from whom to ask for a specific card (by number or by friend) until a set of 4 is completed. If a player successfully obtains the requested card, the player gets another turn, and so on. If the player does not have the requested card, the player will direct the requestor to "go fish" from the pile. The player who runs out of cards when there are no more cards in the pool is out. The winner is then determined by who has the most sets of four cards in front of them.
Shrinking Heads - after their trip to the apple orchard in the fall, KJE students made their apple dolls and wrote the names of their dolls. For this class project, students each took Polaroids of their own apple doll which were then mounted on a swirly painting that the class created together. Alice Roi, Damaris's mom, labeled each picture (with the students' phonetic spelling) and drew on each Polaroid to make a new kind of orchard. (Mixed media collage of acrylic paint, Polaroids, ink and love. Framed 24" x 36")
Many Hands - this bright, mixed-materials collage features photographs of each of the kindergarteners' hands surrounding paper stars cut from each child's painting. The background of the collage is composed of oil-pastel star drawings done by all of the kindergarteners in the class. Not only does the collage feature every child's hand, but every child also participated in painting the stars and drawing the background. The collage is framed and matted. Size: 20" x 3"
Quaker Spice Self-Portraits. These nontraditional self-portrait collaborations were built around each student's choice of one of the Quaker SPICES. Each student writes that word out on a 8.5" x 11" sheet of white paper and then decorates around the written word, from simple doodles to splatter paint to line art to abstract designs in marker or crayon, just to name a few. The diversity of the chosen mediums and word selections is what makes this special. Each student is then photographed in a traditional portrait. Next, in post-production (after receiving each of the student word art pieces), the scanned artwork and the photograph of the student are layered together in Photoshop in a book.
The Friends' Logo Reimagined - in this class project the students of 1JK are paying homage to the Friends' logo and spirit. Bringing together their unique artistic styles they recreate the school logo as a colorful collage to highlight the diversity and liveliness of the Friends community. The collage is composed of monochromatic drawings made by 1JK students using a variety of paper and colored pencils. The artwork is mounted on a 20'' x 20'' x 1-1/2'' wood panel.
Shine Your Light-Three Ways The kids of 1JA are helping us all shine our light a little brighter. First, each child painted a paper lantern with an abstract image of how they "shine their light." Secondly, we selected the shape of a prism as it refracts light to reveal new and hidden colors. Finally, the lanterns have been strung on a lighted garland, creating a long strand of shining lights. This project is sure to light up any home! The lighted garland is 5 feet long when fully stretched out.
Fingerprint Collage 2M worked together to create a magical piece with their shared fingerprints, collaged into a heart shaped print. 18" X 20" framed art.
Our Shining Light Children's Book On standard-sized paper, children drew something that represents the prompt 'My light shines when..." and then wrote an accompanying phrase. The pages were then assembled into a 11x8.5 inch book matte digital photo.
Shine Your Light - often by second grade, many kids feel ready to bid bye-bye to their stuffed animals. Our children, the 2O class of 2033, are going through this transition now. Introducing Shine Your Light, an art piece created for the 2023 Benefit, made from stuffed animals that once belonged to the 2O community. Each family in class has parted ways with a little stuffie. Together we composed an image of New York City, shining through a rainbow- a spectrum of light appearing in the sky and symbol of peace and love. Our Shine Your Light project is made up of two pieces: an art piece and its "Certificate of Authenticity." The Certificate of Authenticity (COA) is a 45-page booklet, part COA, part storybook, that will help the audience get to know each kid through their individual stories and their own unique stuffie. The pages include the kids' portraits with their stuffies, drawings of their stuffies (signed by them), and brief interviews that bring their uniqueness to life.
Origami Butterflies The students from 3C started their 2022-23 school year learning about and participating in taking care of Monarch butterflies. This beautiful acrylic print was created with original artwork from each student folding their own origami butterfly. In addition, each person in class gave an example of how they could do a small act of kindness that can make a big difference. Size of project: 20" x 20." Materials used and/or digital: Origami paper and digital photography on an acrylic print.
We Shine Bright! The students from 3JC used watercolors to decorate images of lightbulbs. In keeping with the event's theme, each student picked one personality trait to describe what makes their "light shine" and wrote it inside their lightbulb. The lightbulbs are mounted above black and white digital images of each student in the class.
Shine a Lens This project invites students to 'Shine a Lens' on what on it means to them to be in third grade. Each child takes a digital photograph that captures what it means to be in third grade from their own perspective. The photos have been printed in Polaroid format and become part of a framed installation. Size of Project: Around 18x24.
Much More Than Fun & Games - Grade 4 truly came together by creating a unique and customized game set that reflects all of the students creativity via words, images, and artwork. The game set contains six personalized games: Jenga (a thoughtful phrase reflecting hopes and dreams of each student is imprinted on the back of every block), Memory (photo pairs of every Grade 4 student and teacher), deck of playing cards (each card has a unique image designed by a student), Dominoes (custom 'Friends Seminary' set), Connect Four (custom 'Friends Seminary' board), and a double-sided puzzle (a beautiful collaborative image of the entire grade on one side and each student's signature on the other). This one-of-a-kind game set truly reflects all of the Grade 4 students and will not only offer the owner special memories of the Class of '31 but an ability for the owner's child to enjoy this special keepsake with both his or her family and peers for years to come.

Hermes Berrio (b. 1980, Colombia), who currently lives and works in Miami, received his BFA from New York, University (2005). In recent years, he has participated in group and solo exhibitions around the world for galleries and institutions in the U.S. and Colombia, Spain, Germany, Mexico, Australia, and Canada. In 2018 and 2022 he was awarded a grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and in 2019 from the Ruth and Harold Chenven Foundation. He has been a Fountainhead Studio artist resident since May 2019 and is represented by Fabien Castanier Gallery in Miami. He continues to evolve his practice, investigating new processes and mediums, while challenging contemporary expectations with his prodigious compositions. This painting, titled XO, is mixed media on canvas (19x18 in).
