When students transition from the OSP to HNC campus, they must get acquainted with a new school building and a new house of worship. For this year's project, our fourth graders have created vibrant collage pieces inspired by segments of the stained-glass windows at Holy Name Cathedral. After viewing the windows at Holy Name and talking about composition, students in each homeroom began with a color hunt through a variety of magazines. This was followed by assembling different blocks of similar hues and arranging the various pieces into a pleasing composition. Each piece is mounted on cradled panel and sealed with gloss medium to protect against fading and give the ready-to-hang artwork a glassy look.

Dimensions for each piece are the same: 18H x 24W x 1.5D

Our fifth graders learned firsthand how entwined art and mathematics can be with this colorful assemblage of tempera triangles. Students began by segmenting their work surface into 16 small triangles using a straightedge. Then, they used tempera paint to create a pattern using their choice of four colors. Next, the triangles were cut out and individually arranged into a design agreed upon by the homeroom. The resulting pieces are as unique as each class, framed, and ready to hang.

Two homerooms each created the word "HOPE" and the other two each created the word "LOVE." This was the first time that our students had worked with acrylic paint, detail paint brushes, and Mrs. Wenc as their Art Teacher. The pieces are framed and ready to hang.

Ties That Bind

To include everyone in the current sixth grade cohort in a Young Artist project, students were introduced to fibers art and challenged to learn how to make a three-strand braid. Within the lettered groups for their language and specials classes, each student created a friendship bracelet using their choice of embroidery floss. The bracelets from two sections were then woven together resulting in two matted and framed pieces of abstract art.

After that, a volunteer from each homeroom was given creative license to compose a unique design.

Flowers of Friendship - Class of 2022

In the United States, chrysanthemums symbolize friendship, happiness, and well-being. Students in homeroom pairs each contributed a richly patterned petal for their unique interpretation of the flower. We owe a special thanks to Rachel Mason (former HNC Art Teacher) for saving this beautiful artwork, as they were created by our most recent graduates pre-pandemic when they were seventh graders.

These shapes were then arranged onto hand dyed paper collages on canvas to portray a feeling of harmony and connection.

Students utilized the wet-on-wet technique to create an array of kaleidoscopic watercolor backgrounds that organically yet harmoniously merge into each other. They then used their vivid imaginations to add purposeful markings to the water colored creations. The finished material was meticulously cut into hexagonal shapes to add structure and collaged onto canvas, hence offering a beautiful contrast.
