Try your hand in ceramic art with a "clay and sip night" with Efren at OSP. Efren will lead instruction in creating ceramic mugs as well as help you develop a sculpture of your choice. This will be a two-part workshop with one evening creating your pieces and the other evening glazing (adding a colorful layer of glass) to your artworks that can last a lifetime. Bring snacks and drinks if you like. This will be two fun evenings after school hours.

For this year's project, our fourth graders have created vibrant collage pieces inspired by segments of the stained-glass windows at Holy Name Cathedral. After viewing the windows at Holy Name and talking about composition, students in each homeroom began with a color hunt through a variety of magazines. This was followed by assembling different blocks of similar hues and arranging the various pieces into a pleasing composition. Each piece is mounted on cradled panel and sealed with gloss medium to protect against fading and give the ready-to-hang artwork a glassy look.

Dimensions for each piece are the same: 18H x 24W x 1.5D

Students began by segmenting their work surface into 16 small triangles using a straightedge. Then, they used tempera paint to create a pattern using their choice of four colors. Next, the triangles were cut out and individually arranged into a design agreed upon by the homeroom. The resulting pieces are as unique as each class, framed, and ready to hang.

In the United States, chrysanthemums symbolize friendship, happiness, and well-being. The students then used their cutting skills to create organic shapes, some of them enhanced by pencil markings. These shapes were then arranged onto hand dyed paper collages on canvas to portray a feeling of harmony and connection.

Students utilized the wet-on-wet technique to create an array of kaleidoscopic watercolor backgrounds that organically yet harmoniously merge into each other. They then used their vivid imaginations to add purposeful markings to the water colored creations. The finished material was meticulously cut into hexagonal shapes to add structure and collaged onto canvas, hence offering a beautiful contrast.
