Based on one of the Godfathers of modern yoga, BKS Iyengar, and his book entitled "Light on Yoga". Mr. Iyengar has had a significant impact upon the health and well-being of millions of people that practice yoga today. The piece depicts the strength, vitality and freedom as well as the sensuality and geometry of the human form.

This piece was inspired by the classic children's novel, The Secret Garden. The story's message is about healing, growth, and transformation. Using this theme, I created my own secret garden, shaping and transforming the actual pages from the story into three dimensional roses. I chose to create a neutral color palette so that Frances Hodgson Burnett's words be the only contrast in the piece, becoming part of the art itself. Paper on canvas.

Two happy children come from inside the story with red balloons in their hands ready to travel into a world of fantasy. Books offer this to everyone, regardless of age, gender or nationality. Reading is freedom!

Albert Lamorisse's beloved film "The Red Balloon" is a moving story about a boy and his best friend, a bright red balloon. This tribute to childhood continues to inspire readers of every generation. My artwork represents the power of reading books and the importance of Public libraries for all people in the community.

"Jane Eyre", which I read in my adolescence is a coming-of-age story dealing with stark, cold, lonely, and painful experiences. The protagonist grows through these experiences to reach her happiness and desired marriage. I chose to paint her her victory, her climactic wedding moment. I painted over the grim, black and white woodcut printed on the cover, depicting her tough voyage up to the wedding.

Using my preferred bright colors, it contrasts with the grim woodcut print under it.

I've chosen "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau. "What lies behind us and what lies ahead of us are tiny matters compared to what lies in us." This quote by Thoreau is repeated and embedded into the artwork.

My READ piece is an extension of my current large-scale Lenticular Process body of work. The multi-step process consists of creating a lenticular image from a series of images and placing it behind a lenticular lens.

Growing up in Philadelphia, I was inundated with Robert Indiana's original LOVE statue. It has been used in so many various forms that it just felt natural to repurpose it.

This book "Africa Adorned" has fueled my passion and influenced my work. Each tribe distinguishes themselves with painted body art and jewelry, as it depicts a narrative of their station in life.

Too Much Order is a fable about fear inhibiting one's actions. The characters are Mr.& Mrs. Scaredy-Pants who live in an enclosed, perfectly neat and ordered environment. Their world is flung apart when they venture outside. The pop-up engineering of the shard-like chaos outside is contrasted with the rectangular pop-up house. I experimented with paper engineering of the pop-up book and digital imaging. The original assemblage was derived from scrap monotypes. The figures, Mr. & Mrs. Scaredy-Pants, evolved from my work with Puritan imagery and childhood memories.

I have always loved Calvino's way of telling stories and his attraction to games and play. There is perhaps no book that expresses the ambiguity of 'wherever you go, there you are' more than his "Invisible Cities." A portrait of how one place can hold an infinite meaning, while at the same time, any or all places can resemble each other if you look at them in the right light. I have often used pages from this book in my artwork to suggest ideas from the text. This is the first time I have used my work to express the essence of the book from Calvino's perspective as a portrait of Venice.

My love of Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventure in Wonderland" began as a child and the story has impacted my lifelong work. In the sequel "Through the Looking-Glass", Alice enters a fantastical world through a mirror.

My current body of work uses the concept of reflection, allowing the observer to become a part of the piece. The play on blithe fairytale and sinister nightmare opens a balanced world of masculine and feminine storytelling. My piece demonstrates that balance of lightheartedness and darkness with the use of the glass cloche mirroring one's image and matte black ceramic representing an all-so-inviting start, but horrifying end to a mad tea party.

The Great Masters is a book I enjoy looking through over and over again. In this piece, I have highlighted pages with examples of some of the most incredible and awe-inspiring work created by Giotto, Botticelli, Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Titian. I am honoring these foundational masters of fine art and creators of the renaissance who still influence the art world today. Though it continues to shape me as an artist, I am happy to part with this treasured book in celebration of my favorite art show's 60th anniversary.

The book I chose is titled "The Bear Nobody Wanted" by Janet and Allan Ahlberg.

My work often embraces topics of injustice, folks who are sometimes misunderstood, or a simple nod to the absurdity and grandness that everyday can bring. The title of this book alone immediately connected with me and inspired this piece.

This piece features three small books from a series of short stories by Marguerite Duras, my favorite French writer and poet. As she refers often to nature, I worked with old miniatures of botanicals, watercolored them and added goldleaf to celebrate the beauty of her writing.

"Papaver Orientale"

When I create, I draw inspiration from the urban environment as well as nature. I strive to use materials that would be condemned to the landfill and use stitching and sewing techniques to bring my art to life. I am an avid reader and love to listen to audiobooks and stitch. "The Poppy War" by R.F. Kuang is exciting to listen to and perhaps "Papaver Orientale" was indirectly inspired by it.

Materials are single-use plastic, stitched by hand and machine and stretched over a stretched canvas.

Written by my father Gregg Lorberbaum, "BECOMING Who You Want To Be" is an important book that has helped shape me as a person and my career as an artist. The book features life lessons, unique perspectives and thought-provoking approaches toward living a happy and successful "role-based lifestyle". As my original artwork is featured throughout the book, I myself am an example of someone who has benefited greatly from my father's teachings and outlook on life. We are all a work in progress... I am still becoming the artist and person that I want to be.

"The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein is one of the first books I remember reading as a child. I was struck by the emotion in this story about giving and taking, selflessness. and loneliness. As an adult, I can see a new message in the story: as you chase your dreams and desires through life, sometimes it's the simple pleasure of giving of one's self that brings the greatest contentment.

I created this piece through the eyes of the young boy in the story. It reflects his vision of the special and magical tree, a place of innocence and abundance he can revisit to find peace.

The Nerikomi technique I have used originated in Japan and involves coloring porcelain clay with ceramic stains, and then combining and stacking the different colored clays into long blocks or "canes". These blocks are then sliced into sections to reveal the cross section pattern, and hand built with these sections to create a form.

"Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" has been shared through five generations of my family. My grandmother read to me from the book she was given by her mother. My children giggled at bedtime as I read the very same book. This whimsical story of talking animals and nonsense leads to an appreciation of the absurd, a love for storytelling, and a passion for reading. My piece keeps these precious memories safe for the generations to come.

As a creator of wearable art, my work is inspired by the lifestyle of my culture and desire to share that culture with others. When creating my one-of-a-kind wearable pieces, I normally draw a sketch using colored pencils before starting. For this exhibition, I did a sketch and then utilized real silk and cotton hand-dyed yarn. The cotton is from my own garden, I grow and dye my own yarn. In this piece I wanted to show how my imagination works before creating the actual wearable piece.

With all due respect I chose to deconstruct and then reconstruct the 1973 book "Master Builders of the Animal World" by David Hancocks. As an abstract painter, my world consists of telling stories purely through the balance of visual elements. The stories are never crystal clear and are always open to interpretation. This wonderful little book provided me with a generous supply of material to ponder and reimagine within the structure of the original book. Select phrases and images were cut, rearranged and reconfigured throughout the pages. While the storyline may be a bit unclear, the mysterious elements of the animal world present anew.

Wherever I am, I love to surround myself with things I find inspiring. New places, new experiences, and new people energize and inform my creativity. The process of discovery, the excitement of the unexpected, the contrast of old vs. new all come together in this Andy Warhol book I created for the Art of Storytelling exhibit.

I was Inspired by Andy Warhol's famous Brillo boxes which were created to fulfill the idea that art should imitate life. I'd like to think if he were around today he'd use an Amazon box as his medium. It's a perfect connection to this theme as Amazon started out as a book company. Merging the branding of Amazon and Chanel - my art comes together with intention to give this piece textural meaning.

This piece was inspired by the memoire "The Hare with the Amber Eyes" by Edmund de Waal, who is also a potter. His thought-provoking book tells the story of his family's WWII experience. While most of their priceless artwork was confiscated by the Nazis, his family's Japanese sculpture collection was miraculously hidden and kept safe.

I fired this piece in the Raku tradition, a 16th century Japanese pottery technique. The Netsuke (or the Hare) was from the Edo period, which is a little later than the origins of Raku.

In 2018, I began to have conversations about visual perception with Professor Ming Meng, a psychologist studying the science of visual perception. Over the years, our conversations began to focus on the matter of how we see color and we began to imagine a book project to formalize our ideas. In the Spring of 2022, we privately published a booklet: "The Energy Theory of Color".

These two panels present some of the actual color woodblock imagery we use in the booklet to illustrate our thinking. They include woodblock prints exploring the work of Josef Albers (Interaction of Color) as well as an exposition of a Matt Brown color woodblock print from an Energy Theory of Color point of view.

Dr Seuss's whimsical, entertaining, and insightful children's books have opened up a world of fancy and delight for me throughout my life. "Oh, The Places You'll Go" is an inspiring book, filled with hope and encouragement. I decided to use it as the framework for bringing together many characters from his other books to follow my yellow brick road.

An exploration of the physical presence of hardcover books and their function as building blocks or elements in creating a larger picture of life. "Rorschach's Reality", is a colorful arrangement of books that plays with our perceptions of space and reality. The more you look, the more you question what is. Constructed for the Armonk Outdoor Art Show's 60th anniversary, "Rorschach's Reality" is part of my newest body of work called "Whitewashed". In this series I first spray paint books white to subdue the title information, allowing the viewer a few moments to simply take in the textures and physicality of the old books, before identifying with any of their titles. The books become elements of something larger, recognizable entry points into the full field abstract picture plan.

Walt Whitman, Mark Twain and the History of New York. These titles feature prominently in this image that plays with the idea of the reveal of the magician. The moment when the sides of a box are dropped away to reveal objects that appear in the once empty space. Slight of hand coming to mind in the artists hand movement caught on film. Since childhood, books have always been magical in the the way they can transport you to a distant time and location.

This image is part of my "Off the Shelf" series that celebrates the lives of old books. Some have come from old library collections, some from basements of used bookstores, all have a story. Each image starts as a black and white negative capturing the worn book edges and patina of the old books that have been assembled and arranged in a meaningful way. I then make a black and white print in the traditional darkroom which I proceed to chemically alter with sepia toners, calligraphy pens, bleaches, and various homemade chemical concoctions. This work print is brought into the computer so a stable, archival print can be created. This print, made for the Armonk Outdoor Art Show's 60th anniversary, is my artist's proof.

My art depicts some of my favorites stories from Greek mythology.

In the first piece, "Neptune and Amphitrite", Neptune had fallen in love with Amphitrite but she fled from him and sought refuge with Atlas. We are looking into the mighty sea-god's shrine in which he appears to us with his spouse Amphitrite, goddess of the sea.

The second piece is "The Judgement of Paris", a contest between the three most beauitful goddesss of Olympos - Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena. The three goddesses appeared before the shepherd prince and offered him gifts for favor. He chose Aphrodite.

The story of this vessel is the story of the American manufacturing process. It is made of thousands of layers of automotive paint overspray accumulated over time on factory surfaces. In generic form, this industrial waste byproduct is called Fordite. The Fordite chunk used in this vessel was harvested in Detroit, Michigan from a Jeep manufacturer. The paint layers that you see exposed here reflect countless pages from this American manufacturing story. In keeping with a storytelling theme, we layered and encased pages from old car parts and sales catalogs.

I have enjoyed reading the author Thomas Mann since high school. When i couldn't sleep, his short story collection "Death in Venice" was something I could finish in a night. This piece featuring a view of Venice began as a study for a larger painting. Venice provides the perfect balance of orange-red hues with blue green relief. I am happy to report that my larger piece along this study have both earned award recognition.

Ethiopia, the oldest independent country in Africa, was on top of my travel list. "Ethiopia and the Origin of Civilization" by John G Jackson, is a short and inspiring book providing the history ignored by mainstream historians. i finally traveled there in 2017 and enjoyed capturing Ethiopian tribes and rock-cut churches at Lalibela.

To photograph wild horses is true a gift. When I am miles away in the high mountain desert all alone there is no loneliness as I am with wild horses and burros. What these amazing animals have given to me in life can only be repaid in advocacy. The unending passion, strength, and advocacy that is needed to fight a battle for their freedom and respect cannot be surrendered. With my photography, I tell their story. "A Bond for Life" tells the story of two wild mustangs that will share a special bond throughout their lives.

I chose to donate this vintage book purse because of the story's unanticipated climb to the Caldecott Medal in 1964. The book is one of very few picture books to make deliberate and beautiful use of the emotion of anger. "Where the Wild Things Are" has remained a beloved children's book for decades. Whenever I find this book at a library sale or flea market, it has usually been much loved by its owner.

By wearing this vintage book purse, you preserve a wonderful book. Large enough to hold most tablets, two interior pockets sized for IDs, and waterproofed to protect the book cover. Save a book, read your purse!

"Grass is Singing "

"Grass is Singing" is an oil-on-paper painting using thin glazes of oil color and a sgraffito technique scratching through the glaze to reveal color beneath. I've been using some grassy greens in my work recently, and when I started working on this book project I was reminded of a favorite author, Doris Lessing. Her novel "The Grass Is Singing" contrasts her characters' lives full of conflict with the beauty of the land in which they live.

Along the Way

It is often said that an artist's work is the culmination of life's experiences. Barging along the French canals and stopping along the way to visit the small towns on market days gave me the inspiration to create the colorful markets that soon became my signature art.

My hope is to pull the viewer into my experiences and share the events and places I have seen.

Since childhood, I've always wanted to create works of art that impart distinct sensations of dynamic movement to the viewers, and I believe I have achieved this sensation in each of my creations. Above all, I love seeing viewers smile when they connect with the vitality of my silk mosaic art. My silk mosaics are best known for their strong and unique use of color, as it has energized and intrigued me for as long as I can remember. Years of self-taught art and silk art experience has led me to a very saturated, bold, and recognizable silk mosaic art.

This piece was created specifically for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Armonk Outdoor Art Show.

Continuum of Spirit

As a butterfly emerges through metamorphosis, this unique ability to transform evokes an
uplifting sense of renewal. Thanks to the generous support of Northern Westchester Hospital a part of Northwell Health, I had the privilege of speaking with their expert Neurosurgeons about a recent patient experience and the honor of sharing their story through my art.

In Continuum of Spirit, the three-dimensional imagery of butterflies and music, reflect the harmony of talent and extraordinary skill that provided lifesaving care to this patient.
Observing a butterfly as it flies, one is struck by its delicate nature and darting movements that appear both frenetic and precise at the same time.

The story shared by neurosurgeons Dr.
David Gordon and Dr. Danilo Silva echoed this balance in the rapid yet seamless response of
each department and discipline that played a vital role in the success of their surgery.
When a patient arrived in critical condition, it took decisive intervention to determine the cause: a brain hemorrhage resulting from a complex vascular malformation that had burst. In the past, this patient would have required transfer to another medical center and would have been unlikely to survive that trip.
Today, the level of emergent care capabilities available at Northwell Health's Westchester
hospitals - Northern Westchester and Phelps - including advanced imaging and the ability to
perform complex, microscopic cerebrovascular surgery, mean that this patient is instead
walking, talking, and spending time with loved ones.
The musical notes visible throughout my piece are emblematic of the emergency room nurses and doctors, anesthesiologists, surgeons, operating room personnel, and physician assistants that acted with the necessary speed and expertise to save this patient's life. Just as individual music notes become more powerful as they are joined together in a song, I have positioned the
butterflies in a circular formation to represent the vast potential for restoration and renewal when the individual pieces of expertise and care join together, orchestrated flawlessly.
My choice to utilize medical textbooks about the human brain throughout the piece is an
expression of gratitude to Dr. Gordon who conveyed that it was his initial interest in the brain that was the springboard for his foray into medicine.
