With over 81,000 Hmong living in Minnesota and over two-thirds in the Seven County Metropolitan Area, the Hmong have made numerous contributions to the political, social, and cultural fabrics of Minnesota.

As home to more than 17 individual food stalls, over 20 farmers market vendors, along with 100 specialty merchandise shops, the shopping center is one of the largest Hmong markets in the country. Learn about the Hmong history and culture.

Walking Tour: Immigration and the (Re)Making of Saint Paul's East Side

Examine the role of immigration in the making and remaking of St. Paul's East Side over the last 150 years. Explore Swede Hollow and its role as the first site of settlement in the 1850s, Then onto Payne Avenue, a center of immigrant life from Swedish, Italian, and German immigrants of the 19th century, to the Hmong, Mexican, and Salvadoran immigrants of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

The tour lasts about two hours is limited to 25 people. Date to be mutually agreed upon by donor and winning bidder. It is suggested to schedule the tour during the April - October time frame.

Your Tour Guide, Peter Rachleff, taught American Labor, Immigration and African American History at Macalester College for over 30 years. He has retired from college instruction and is now leading the East Side Freedom Library, which is transforming the historic Carnegie library, formerly known as Arlington Hills Library, into a labor and immigration history center.
