About the Artist:
Robert Sherer is a multimedia artist whose work explores race, gender, sexuality and Southern identity. He is best known for his use of unconventional media and for four incidents of art censorship. His work is the subject of an art book titled "Blood Works: the Sanguineous Art of Robert Sherer" published by the KSU Press. He is currently represented by Kunstbehandlung Galerie, Munich, Germany; Sidetracks Gallery, New Hope, PA., and 378 Gallery, Atlanta, GA. Sherer is a Professor of Art within the School of Art + Design at Kennesaw State University.

These were the original questions behind SPOON's graphic experimentation that ultimately led to the development of her uniquely recognizable style.Removing content until the subject is unrecognizable, she slowly reintroduces data and color in search of the threshold where visual and mental perceptions are balanced.
What began as an idea she was testing for fun quickly turned into something distinctive that can now be seen at Fortune 500 Companies, sport stadiums, luxury hotels, museums and private residences around the world.
Every painting is composed and painted by hand, one dot at a time. In redacting a subject to the edge of recognition, she challenges viewers to recompose only the information that is absolutely necessary.
Distance, viewing angle, and even a camera lens changes the way SPOON's artwork resolves. As a result, everyone will experience it differently depending on their perspective, mentally and physically. This moving target of data assemblage constantly challenges her to rethink each painting in a new way.
Her background in Urban Design and study of Architecture + Engineering have undoubtedly shaped the way SPOON approached art and what led to her initial concept. She also maintains a sense of environmental and social responsibility. By using the techniques she learned as a LEED Green Professional (buying locally sourced, non-toxic materials) and donating a portion of the proceeds from every painting sale to charity, she tries to ensure that her success benefits the greater good.

Sarah Emerson is an artist based in Atlanta, Georgia. Her paintings and installations present viewers with highly stylized versions of nature that combine geometric patterns and mythic archetypes to examine contemporary landscape. Emerson graduated from the Atlanta College of Art in 1998 and she completed her Masters Degree at Goldsmiths College, London in 2000. She has exhibited her work in galleries throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, including White Columns, New York, Cosmic Gallery (Cargnel Bugada), Paris, the Musee de la Civilisation, Quebec, Canada, Mirus Gallery, San Francisco, Ca., the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville, Fl. and the High Museum in Atlanta, GA. Her work has been published in Noplaceness: Art in a Post Urban Landscape, Stickers Deluxe: From Punk Rock to Contemporary Art, and New American Paintings in 2012, 2007, and 2003. In 2014 she was awarded the 2015 MOCA GA Working Artist Project Grant selected by Siri Engberg, Senior Curator of Visual Arts at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis. Michael Scoggins was born in Washington D.C in 1973 and gained an MFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. He has attended various prestigious residencies including the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, the MacDowell Colony in New Hampshire, and Fountainhead in Miami. Michael has gained international recognition and gallery representation in Atlanta, Miami, New York, Detroit, San Francisco, Seoul, and Vienna. Purvis Young painted on scrap lumber and plywood that he scavenged from the streets and vacant lots of Overton, the historically black neighborhood where he lived in Miami, Florida, and whose long deterioration he witnessed. He sometimes depicted his surroundings literally or "inner eyes"?-?and transcends the misery that surrounds him.
Young pursued a keen interest in art by studying books in his local libraries. When he began painting, he was inspired by the popular mural movement of the 1960s. He hung his paintings of tenement life and animals on the exterior walls of abandoned buildings in his neighborhood.

Artist StatementI am a topophiliac. My affection for place and all things geographic is manifested through various sculpture series, public art installations, photography, and works on paper. The appeal is not the actual geographic information as much as what that information tells us about ourselves as individuals and as a culture. Through my art, I tend to focus on the fundamental qualities of mapping- the mysteriousness, inherent biases, cultural authoritativeness, and ability to simultaneously represent and distort reality.

His response to his surroundings, whether in his hometown, Atlanta, or while traveling, serves as a major impetus for much of what he creates. Projects include producing a significant body of artwork resulting from hiking and biking along the course of the 1,270 mile section of the 49th parallel that defines the U.S./Canadian border, photographing blank billboards along fictitious Interstate 50, and making thousands of rubbings from text and imagery from the ubiquitous historical plaques and markers found in American cities.
He has permanent public art installations in the International Concourse at the Atlanta Airport (gates E 33 - 36) and in the Jacksonville Airport. His work is included in the JPMorgan Chase Art Collection, High Museum of Art, MOCA - GA (Museum of Contemporary Art - Georgia), and numerous other public and private collections. He received his B.A. from Rhodes College and his M.F.A. from Boston University. Between degrees he served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Liberia, West Africa. His studio is located in Atlanta, Georgia.

Jeff Campana is a nationally exhibiting ceramic artist working primarily in functional pottery and sculptural vessel form. Prior to his appointment at Kennesaw State University in 2013, he was a long-term artist in resident and Windgate Fellow at the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Art in Helena, Montana. He has taught at the University of Louisville, Indiana University Southeast, and Bennington College in Vermont.
As an active exhibitor, Jeff Campana has had work in more than 100 exhibitions of national or regional scope and has been featured in numerous magazines and books on the topic of ceramic art. In the summer of 2016, He returned to Helena, Montana as a resident artist at Studio 740 where he completely reinvented his studio practice. The new work, a product of a deconstructed mold system, debuted in the Fall of 2017 in the international exhibition Breaking the Mold at Eutectic Gallery in Portland Oregon.
A master of wheel throwing and mold making, Jeff Campana's major research interests are now based in computer aided design and the transformation of digital file to ceramic production via a variety of additive and subtractive tools such as SLA 3D printing and CNC milling.

"Melanie Rolfes and Michael Zavison are a collaborative duo whose individual artistic trajectories intersected at the Atlanta Midtown Festival of the Arts in 2010. Describing an almost immediate creative connection, Melanie and Michael realized that not only did their artistic interests line up, but that the work they each did individually could be stronger when paired together.
Michael's immersive abstractions met Melanie's color-infused European sensibilities. While she creates as a way to channel and direct energies and thoughts-making works that are both focal points as well as imaginary passages, he uses industrial materials to create archival works that transform spaces. In many ways what they both do is take the fleeting moments of beauty created by time (like the patina on old plaster walls, or the accumulated rust of decades) make it stable, deliberate, and manageable?which is to say: theirs is a process of creation, not neglect or decay.
To achieve long-lasting works that look as if time and nature have been at work, theirs is a process of marrying new technology to older knowledge and endless, inventive experimentation. When talking about how a new piece comes to life, they're both quick to say that there is no set way, "one of us says: 'hey?I have an idea,'" and the two are off and running. Delegating responsibilities and communication is the key to pulling off deceptively complex compositions whose success depends as much on materials expertise and timing, as color and design theory. "?the work is complex, a lot of things come together in a very short time?when we put everything together, some of the chemical reactions we are working with require more than one set of hands. So one of us takes the lead and the other acts as support-it's like cooking."

Artist Statement I am self-taught and believe art should be alive and that each piece translates the beauty of movement, reflective light, transparencies and intense color. None of the pieces are sketched in advance. There is beauty in spontaneous inspiration which is why I choose to take this approach.
The materials used are museum-grade acrylics on custom built wood panels, utilizing a variety of brushes and palette knives in addition to other unconventional tools. My goal is to bring an uplifting, alive and, even sometimes, playful painting to the viewer in order to share my love of texture, movement and color.

My name is Michael Taylor and I'm a self taught abstract artist. My goal is to create expressive abstract art. My version of expressionism art has three components in capturing attention; color, motion and texture. I use metallic paint in all my paintings and the application of light will change the tone and color of the work. I build wood canvases because allows me to use various materials and manipulate my work in ways that cotton canvas will not allow. Rarely do I create a work that is static and there is always movement in the colors and materials.

Atlanta native, Nathan Nardi always found himself drawn to creative expression through making. He discovered his passion for glassblowing in 2001 and realized that glass art was the discipline he wanted to specialize in. Throughout the years, he has trained under many different glass artists. His primary artistic expression is the abstraction of natural form which can be seen in all his work, whether sculptural, decorative, or functional. In 2011, Nate Nardi moved back to his hometown to pursue his dream of making unique hand-blown glass art. Nate and his wife own and operate Decatur Glassblowing on the East side of Atlanta together. At his shop, Nate creates glass objects, many of which are custom ordered, as well as offers glassblowing classes to the public.

Michael Banks was born in 1972 and was raised by his mother in a housing project in north Alabama. He graduated from high school and was a star athlete. As a child Michael loved to draw and paint and create from whatever materials he could find. His mother encouraged him and he continued to create until November 1992, when his mother died. In his grief, Michael's desire for making art left him. He fell into a great depression and stopped painting.
For five years Michael's life took many different turns during his struggle with depression and alcohol addiction. Finally, in 1997, he recalled the hope and encouragement that his mother had given him and he began to paint again. Since then he has experimented with various techniques combining both found objects, building materials as well as artists' materials. He developed a style using roofing tar as an undercoating on wood with artist's paint incising subtle nuances.
While painting Michael is totally absorbed in his work, reacting without deep thought or planning. Painting, for him, is almost an automatic process. When questioned about what he means by a certain part of a painting, he often responds, "It surprises me what I have painted when I have finished. I was just in my groove and this is what came out. Wow."
Michael has won many honors with his work which has been exhibited in New York, Denver, and Atlanta. The Hurn Museum in Savannah, Georgia presented a One-Man exhibition of his work in 2005 and has a number of his works in their permanent collection. Articles have appeared in Southern Living magazine (August 2006) and Better Homes and Gardens (August 2006) which featured him and his work. A review of his Hurn exhibition in the Savannah Morning News stated: "Ultimately, 'Michael Banks: Outsider Artist' offers Savannah's most rewarding and penetrating solo show in recent memory. As this unforgettable exhibit clearly indicates, Banks is one outsider artist who has certainly earned the right to be on the inside."

JC, born in Venezuela, where he was exposed to a unique blend of cultures, races and flavors of the Caribbean, under a powerful influence from his parents. His father, a top executive of the oil industry and a nature lover with a military orientation, gave him the best education. His mother, a lady dedicated to her family and a passionate interior designer, gave him the knowledge about history of arts and styles. Both of them, supported an extensive traveling and an admiration for nature, and most important inspired him to be unique, and strive for the best.
As a boy, he remembers being seated at his desk, drawing and painting trees and horses. He thought every other child was doing the same. Later public recognition appeared when he won some contests for children that he casually found himself involved with. He showed a natural skill in painting that everyone from his family took for granted. His father had him take endless private music & sport lessons a side from his catholic school work, where he found the passion for equestrian and later lessons in business including international affairs. A formal education in painting was never part of his life so far. He had to follow his father's steps into the corporate world.
JC has been inspired constantly by Monet, Klimt, Modigliania and Leonardo da Vinci, making a blend of his own style , he painted 190 canvases in the first year with a preference for peaceful views and close-ups of beautiful women with ethnic flavors and the light of goddesses . In just six months since his work became public he has started to receive great attention and very warm welcomes, even from his fellow artists. Now his work seems to influence everyone who comes in contact with it. His art is admired by many people who will sometimes wait for those special requests. A brush stroke is the start of everything and the feeling to be able to create beautiful things that didn't exist yesterday. He is now working on his own, trying not to be too academic, instead he is trying to be honest to himself. Learning from the master, but giving his personal approach to the description of light that they started 100 years ago.

There is a conventional thought that the Pop Art movement existed from the mid 1950's until the late 1970's, but for Brennan, the movement never ended. The idea that the utilitarian objects surrounding us can be seen as beautiful art is what drives him. He sees potential in creating art by combining unrelated objects and uniting them with color and spatial harmony thereby bringing more meaning than simply the means of necessity and convenience.
Brennan's process begins with either stretched canvas or plywood panel which may support a collage of vintage literature and technical drawings building the background with color and geometric suggestion. Over that, images are built up with pencil, charcoal, ink, acrylic and oil. These are the images of objects that challenge the existing notions of the objects that attend our daily existence. Large scale works extend to seven feet by nine feet.
Brennan was awarded "Best in Show" at the Old Fourth Ward Arts Festival, in Atlanta in 2016, and at the Big Four Show, in Louisville in 2017. In 2018 he was the featured artist at the Fine Art for Ocala Festival.

Marc James Villanueva ("MJ") is a painter of contemporary mixed-media and representational abstract works on canvas and wood panel. His compositions are a fusion of color, texture and movement achieved through the application of oil/acrylic paints, crushed Pau'a seashell, recycled glass, marble dust, copper, paper and Lauhala, indigenous Hawaiian fiber.

Marc James Villanueva's work is characterized by the harnessing of images and shapes that emerge during the process of painting and by his attempt to transfer pure emotion directly onto the canvas. His work finds favor with many because of the range in styles and techniques he employs This variation is evident from his quiescent rectangles and simple reeds to his spirited sea jellies and multifaceted geodes.

What I doArtist Statement Morgan Boszilkov is a self-taught artist using clay, fabric, and paint to create two-dimensional and sculptural vibrant works of art. She has created an innovative form of fine art: ceramics sewn onto canvas.
Her work captures the beauty and richness of the natural world amidst our changing climate, reflecting her core values of conservation and sustainability. Her newest work of ceramics on canvas debuted in a nearly sold-out solo show at Gainey Hall in Serenbe.
Morgan sculpts clay into natural forms like flowers and leaves. She also makes ceramic "quilt" triangles, glazing each as if it were a miniature painting and integrates them into the sculptures. These triangles frame, flow through, emphasize, anchor and transition into the organic shapes. She then works intuitively to arrange, connect and harmonize the sculptural elements and textures with beading and embroidery on sustainable fabrics.
She experiments with the concept of wabi-sabi and beauty in imperfection, exploring various materials and always experimenting with new techniques. The process of art is an impatient meditation that brings her joy and fulfillment.

I am a visual artist specializing in single-line drawing and painting. My work celebrates the strength and resilience of the Black woman. My process is a mixture of technical and artistic practices. I never lift my hand as I draw and paint, so each piece is made with oneunbroken line. It is common to see a grandmother, a dear friend, or even experience a snippet of a historical moment in my work. The women that populate mywork, while subject to societal stigmas and projected views, portray confidence, strength, and resilience. One of my pieces in particular, "Fruits of My Labor", provides women of color a strong mirror reflection of their confidence, power and beauty. The woman in thispiece has full lips, a wide "negro" nose, and small, but bright piercing eyes. She is proud of her features, wearing her gele, and holds her head high as she goes about her day. The Black woman is no longer the most neglected person anymore. I provide opportunities for women of color to reflect on theirstrength and resilience and to be able to share their own stories and journeys. My work allows women of color to authentically be themselves and unapologetically love themselves and the challenges that they've been through.

Russ Colegrove is an award winning landscape photographer with a creative eye that leads to other areas of photography. This includes other parts of the natural world from animals to plants to sunlit clouds and abstracts of the earth from above. His Urbanscape work is not street photography but rather urban landscapes that lean into architectural photography. He describes it as images of "the places we live in and the things we have made." Russ uses a full range of photographic techniques to capture the light; combining film, digital, color, B&W, monochromatic with the goal "to present a moment as I saw it and felt it, to invoke for the viewer the same feelings I had from each instance and place."
His images are presented online but as a master printer the full beauty of his work is best seen in his limited edition prints. In the words of Ansel Adams "You don't take a photograph, you make it."

Impressionist painter based in Georgia.In India, I started out as a portrait and sculpture artist. In later years, the use of color abstraction to improve realism has become more central tomy style and themes.
On canvas, I mostly work with oils and acrylicsand application tools like palette knives. Insome of my paintings, I have explored thesgraffito and impasto techniques.Some of my accomplishments include enteringpainting competitions, participating in numerous juried art shows and in a national gallery, and creating illustrations for a magazine in India.
My training in art was with a well known portrait painter in India at Chitra mandir where I learnt portrait and landscape painting.
My painting style and concept:Simple shapes and color blocks that communicate with one another are what set my paintings apart from others. I try to engage the audience in passive communication. Simple seascapes and landscapes serve as the foundation for the composition of my works. Due tothe deep spectrum pigments and color integrity of acrylics, I favor them.
Our brains begin to form outlines on the colorpatches we observe as early as early infancy. When it comes to conserving optical resources, colors are seldom given much attention unless they aredistinctive.
Various retinal cells see color and brightness, and our brains process them using additive superposition logic to produce millions of different hues.

Kristina "Lizrd Sister" Walker is a mixed media artist whose emotional work depicts the human condition. Using nontraditional materials, she depicts everything from biting social commentary to fun(ky) abstractions . Her work emphasizes strong color, rhythm, and mark-making, often depicting the human figure. The belief that everyone should be able to see themselves represented in media is a core value that she incorporates both by explicitly depicting different types of underrepresented people and using more universal symbols to represent the feelings of many.
Kristina loves music, dance, and fashion almost as much as her two dogs: Bunny and Tuna.

Edisson Fernandez was born in Bogota, Colombia in 1974. His love for art began at a young age as he was introduced to drawing and freehand creativity by his mother and school nuns as a means to cope with juvenile asthma. As are many, Fernandez is no stranger to hard work and hardship. Following the death of his parents Fernandez found himself in a situation where he was required to grow up quickly - taking on a parental role for his younger siblings. Art was always a refuge - a means of escape into the realm of his dreams and fantasies.
Fernandez's work is deeply influenced by his love for city life - in particular that of Bogota and the surrounding areas of his beloved capital. Fernandez often finds himself torn between an inherent dichotomous nature - his love for the city and its inevitable chaos; and, an inexplicable pull and desire felt to experience and explore the wonders of the country in peaceful solitude.

Although acrylic on panel is a frequent choice, Kristin utilizes a myriad of media in attempt to connect with her audience. And connect she does, transmitting raw emotion through subject matter and technique. Her talent is the product of a personal artistic journey that began early in life.In 1999, Kristin accepted a grant from Georgia Perimeter College to study painting in Imatra, Finland. Guided by Russian and Finnish masters, she explored printmaking, painting, photography and independent studies. The experience has had a lasting effect. Heavily influenced by contemporary European artists, her work is imbued with both the spirit of her journey abroad and a connection with her Scandinavian heritage.
In 2002, she was accepted by the Atlanta College of Art and granted a portfolio scholarship. An original partner of the Woodruff Art Center, the school has been part of Atlanta's art community for almost a century. It was here that she expanded her understanding of color theory, art history, contemporary art practices and artistic discipline. Kristin made the most of this opportunity to hone her technical skills, receiving her BFA, magna cum laude, in 2004.
Kristin continues to build on her unique experiences and technical expertise, participating in numerous gallery shows and exhibits. She has participated in over 17 group shows and personally organized four solo exhibits and five group exhibits. Her work has appeared in galleries all over the Atlanta area, including a yearlong exhibit at the Chrysalis gallery. Her work can be found in private collections throughout the US; as well as in collections in Finland, Russia, Norway, Ireland and Vietnam.
