Medium: A combination of watercolor, gouache, and acrylic
Description: "The Joy She Sees," is inspired by Lovie's mom when describing one of Lovie's most defining characteristics: the joyful way she sees the world. She shared the difference in typical "childhood joy" in comparison to the pure and very rare joy that Lovie experiences, and also gives to the world. The joy that Lovie sees in and gives to the world makes it a better place. This abstract landscape painting is inspired by Lovie's joy, with a realistic foreground that the viewer would experience behind her, contrasting with a bright and colorful landscape from Lovie's viewpoint. The view from Lovie's eyes is meant to convey the joy that Lovie sees in and brings to the world.

Description: After hearing Diane and Meg's story of their fostering experience, I was immediately aware of how much time they spend as a family. There are a handful of meaningful places for them including the beautiful Virginia mountains, so this painting is inspired by a photo they took on a hike at the iconic Humpback Rock. When I learned that the kids they foster love animals, I made it a point to "hide" a couple animals in the clouds. There is so much hope looking out into such an overwhelmingly beautiful landscape. Similarly, I see a bright future for this family as they begin to explore and learn what life together looks like.

Description: It was a joy to learn Anna and Lexi's fostering story. It is clear that they love to adventure together in the great Virginia outdoors, especially rivers, mountains and beaches. As they talked about how much Connor loves to dance, I was inspired by a photo they took of the Rivanna River. There is so much movement and "dancing" in water. A perfect representation of the journey they are taking together as a family through all the rapids, winding and calm spots that a river possesses. It is abundantly clear that joy is so present in the life of this family.

Medium: Acrylic on paper
Description: My small framed pieces are typically smaller compositional segments that I hone in on and cut from larger works on paper that have been painted and layered and worked on over time. I loved the balance and energy in this particular segment and the colors reminded me of Florida's sunny gulf coast...thus the name, "Sarasota".

Description: This piece is inspired by my annual trip to Ocean View Beach. During this time, I seek a physical connection to the earth which provides me a feeling of restoration in both body and spirit. The variety of teals and blues represent the sky and the mineral rich water of the ocean. The movement in the brushstrokes reminds me of the peaceful feeling I get from laying on the sand and listening to the gentle swoosh of waves along the shoreline.

Description: The ocean, like life, is unpredictable. Full of uncertainties and unknowns, intimidating and risky but at the same time deeply compelling and awe-inspiring. It gives us so much, but also takes away, and it can overwhelm us in its magnitude when we feel we've lost our bearings. This piece is a reminder of that, and of the fact that even when we feel a little lost at sea, we are not alone and there is beauty to be found.

Medium: Acrylic on panel
Description: Each morning on my daily walk, I encounter a hillside. It is alive with color and movement, wind tossed shapes of sunlight and shadow, the silent glide of hawks, the rustle of grasses, and the quiet knowing presence of animals and trees. Back in the studio, cycling through layers of observation, memory and invention, the process of painting is about touching this presence. When I paint I can forget my separateness, merging like the deer amidst the leaves.

Size: 30" x 40"
Description: Heather described a memorable day at pool. It was the first time they really felt like they could play with their son, Wilson. I wanted to capture the fun of his splashes and smiles. The family asked to incorporate purple into the painting, to represent her rare warrior's journey. Wilson's ripple is widespread, they are helping to make such a difference encouraging families all over the country to not feel alone in their own rare journey.

Description: Hallie described a day on their farm of feeling empowered while baling hay. I wanted to capture hay bales and the sweet property that their boys get to explore daily.
