$225Joe Krutulis of Indiana (father of Jay Krutulis, owner and winemaker of Walla Walla's Prospice Wines) is a cancer survivor, army veteran, and mechanical engineer who took up art in his retirement. With his engineering background and his love for the natural beauty of the woods of southern Indiana, he has found particular joy in crafting kinetic (moving) sculpture like this mobile, especially made from scavenged native woods from his local forests. On daily walks, Joe can often be seen carrying home a fallen branch that caught his eye as having potential use in his various art projects.
Joe is an Indiana Artisan, meaning that his work has been recognized as among the finest artists and craftsmen in the state of Indiana, and his work has been displayed at the Indiana State Museum and other prominent locations throughout the state. He has produced custom and commissioned work worth worth many thousands of dollars, and constantly finds new and innovative ways to incorporate natural materials into his sculptures.
This piece, titled "Indiana Woods," is a spectacular grouping of five beautifully crafted, three-dimensional leaves of some of Indiana's most common deciduous tress -- Black walnut, sassafras, flowering dogwood, tulip poplar, and sugar maple. Each leaf is hand-carved from gathered, downed wood from the respective species of tree, and the elements are balanced perfectly to dance and float in the air currents in your room.
This one-of-a-kind art piece is something to be admired and treasured for many years to come, and Joe could not be happier to support the American Cancer Society with this contribution to tonight's event.
