"The scientists on earth were concerned that the lunar samples we would be collecting on the Apollo missions could be tainted by our spacesuit gloves as we picked them up and stored them. They devised a small metal Environmental Sample Container (ESC) and asked us to put small rocks and dirt in it using only our shovel. This allowed us to insure we never contacted that sample with our gloves and that it remained stored in the lunar environment, in pristine condition, until we got home."

About Alan Bean
Twelve people have walked on the moon. Only one was an explorer artist, Alan Bean-Apollo XII astronaut, commander of Skylab II and artist. Born in 1932 in Wheeler, Texas and in 1950, Alan was selected for an NROTC scholarship at the University of Texas at Austin. Alan was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy in 1955. Holder of eleven world records in space and astronautics, Alan Bean has had a most distinguished peacetime career. When he wasn't flying, Bean always enjoyed painting as a hobby. Attending night classes at St. Mary's College in Maryland in 1962, Alan experimented with landscapes. During training and between missions as a test pilot and astronaut, he continued private art lessons. On space voyages, his artist's eye and talent enabled him to document impressions of the Moon and space to be preserved later on canvas.

His is a personal portfolio of the golden era of space exploration as viewed by the only artist who has BEEN there. His art reflects the attention to detail of the aeronautical engineer, the respect for the unknown of the astronaut and the unabashed appreciation of a skilled explorer artist. The space program has seen unprecedented achievements and Bean realized that most of those who participated actively in this adventure would be gone in forty years. He knew that if any credible artistic impressions were to remain for future generations, he must paint them now. "My decision to resign from NASA in 1981 was based on the fact that I am fortunate enough to have seen sights no other artist ever has," Bean said, "and I hope to communicate these experiences through art."

Early on a summer morning in 1944, ground crews prepare P-47 Thunderbolts of the 56th Fighter Group for their next mission. Based primarily at Halesworth and Boxted, England, the 56th FG was the only U.S. Fighter Group to fly the P-47 exclusively throughout the war. Known as "Zemke's Wolfpack", the 56th achieved great success against the Luftwaffe with their massive fighters, with some of the highest scoring U.S. aces coming from their ranks. Some of Germany's top fighter aces fell to the Wolfpack in the war.

This 1982 framed poster of artist William S. Phillips' painting "Two Down, One To Go" depicts Tuskegee Airman pilot Clarence D. "Lucky" Lester in his P-51 Mustang shooting down his second of three victories not only in a single day, but in less than five minutes (July, 1944).

The 332nd Fighter Group, better known as the Tuskegee Airmen, were the first Black military aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps. They flew more than 15,000 individual sorties in Europe and North Africa during World War II. Their impressive performance earned them more than 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, and helped encourage the eventual integration of the U.S. armed forces. As seen in the painting, they painted the tails of their P-51s red for identification purposes and were also known as the Red Tail Squadron.
