I've always been fascinated by the powerful and beautiful statue of David. I've spent time looking at Michelangelo's stunning marble work inside the Galleria dell'Accademia museum in Florence, and outside in the palazzo as well. This painting of the acclaimed sculpture helped me imagine Michelangelo's keen ability to portray strength of biblical David in the face of great adversity, bolstered with a humble sling and empowered by a greater source of strength.

30 x 30. Acrylic. Wildflower Dream was inspired by a dream of lying in the middle of a large field with a sea of wildflowers surrounding me. I could smell them and almost touch them, but when I reached out to pick one, they all scattered into space.
Oil and Cold Wax, 24 x 24. A Wing and a Prayer was created primarily with a palette knife because the blend of oil and cold wax creates a thick, fluffy and creamy medium to work with. Use of this medium often leads the artist on a journey of discovery and surprise. Such was the case with A Wing and a Prayer.

This is my original painting, "Shelton Johnson Calls". It is oil paint on a wood-cradled canvas. The artwork is 24 inches (width) x 18 inches (height). Shelton Johnson Calls Description: This piece focuses on where the intersection between race and class has informed my and many of our collective childhoods. I often think about how overlapping adversities of being black and from a lower class makes areas of "play" inaccessible as a child. One recurring point of inaccessibilty coming from these intersections is the inaccessibilty of greenspace due to the mandated infrastructures of poor black neighborhoods. I want to acknowledge the inaccessibility of some children to a truly fruitful childhood. In these childhoods we can't remain blissfully unware of the impact of our adversities. Some elements from my past childhood may seem collaged in with my reimagined space, such as in "Shelton Johnson Calls". In instances such as this I like to imagine that these dual worlds are in the beginning stages of aligning, this early phase in the process may lead the scene to be less cohesive and lead to things such as distortion of scale. In this piece Shelton Johnson calls the children from these government regulated neighborhoods back into the natural world. His life's mission is to encourage black people to reconnect with the natural world. People of disadvantaged groups need to be invited into the space of imagining what a just world is so we can begin to craft it.
This is my original painting, "Painting With Robert Duncanson ". It is oil paint on canvas paper. The artwork is 12 inches (width) x 8.5 inches (height). Painting With Robert Duncanson: My work focuses on where the intersection between race and class has informed my and many of our collective childhoods. As an African-American coming from a lower class, I'm specifically looking at the place where these intersections have led to deficits and examining how we have had to "make do" as children. This pieces focuses on the inaccessibility of imaginative play materials/ spaces due to fiscal deficits and the inaccessibility of the arts for these groups. I want to acknowledge the inaccessibility of some children to a truly fruitful childhood. In these childhoods we can't remain blissfully unware of the impact of our adversities. I overcome these deficits as I create a realm where I create a fantastical painting with one of the first black artists I was introduced to, Robert Duncanson. My paintings create this fantastical fruitfulness that gratifies my inner child but also often acknowledges the "making do" in the past and the unconventional charm these memories have. Although these adversities were present there is a nostalgic lens I look back on my childhood memories with that points towards resilience.

Hand printed and painted ink on cotton, cut and sewn together. (This lightweight textile art hangs from a wooden rod threaded through a sleeve sewn to the back. Screw eyes at each end of the dowel hang on small nails in the wall OR from filament threaded through the eyes.) Looking for points of connection in these vibrant fabrics reminds me of the need for humans to seek out the ideas and interests of others where they can find common ground and make a connection.
Hand printed and painted ink on cotton, cut and collaged together, machine embroidered and mounted in shadow box frame. With mat and frame, it is 17"x35"x2". This is part of a series of abstract representations of trees. All fabric starts out stark white, gaining color and texture from multiple layers of ink.

"Japanese Garden" is one of a series of acrylic paintings on watercolor paper. I was an interesting subject to paint as it contained an arched bridge and a waterfall which made it a real challenge. Thee are also people in the painting to make it more interesting.. The framed and matted size is 18" x 24".
"Sunny Sunflowers" is a watercolor painting that is framed and matted in a 24" x 18" frame. Sunflowers are such a beautiful subject to paint with their bright yellow petals and dark brown centers. This painting consists of 3 large flowers with a pale violet background
"Hidden in a Wreath" is a watercolor painting of a bird's nest that was found in my front door wreath. It was an interesting to subject to paint because of all the loose strands of dried grasses and straws that made up the nest. The flowered wreath surrounding the nest added color to what could have been a dull picture. The painting is framed in a gold 20" x 16" frame.
"Going Fishing?" is a 16" x 20" watercolor painting of a fishing boat anchored in the harbor. The setting of the water and background attracted my attention and provided a challenge in painting the reflection of the boat in the water. The picture if framed and matted in a 16" x 20" frame.
"Daisies and Seashells" is an acrlic painting on watercolor paper. It a still life that I set up outside on my picnic table. I love daisies and had just returned from the beach with my collection of seashells. The sun was bright one morning and I spread out my beach towel and placed the flowers on it. The arrangement seemed perfect so I took out my paints and brushes. The painting is framed and matted in a 24" x 18 frame.
16x 20 Watercolor of Pocahontas Lake in the fall. For me it is a peaceful place that captures the sparkling water on the lake and calms the mind.

9.5 x 11. Acrylic. I love to paint birds in unlikely places. I decided this little fellow belonged in a big hydrangea garden. If you listen closely, you can hear him sing.
6 x 12 Unframed Gallery Wrapped. Mixed Mediums. I am a voracious reader of fantasy, which seems to be a driving force in my art. This is just a little side piece of a glittering galaxy found only in my mind. If you look closely, to the left of center is a tiny woman - the goddess of all she surveys.
9 x 11 Mixed Mediums. I do not have an aquarium because our cats like to fish. So, I created a portable window to a reef that will go anywhere - and you don't have to change the water or feed the fish.

My love of all things colorful and circular shows up in this multi-layered oil painting which consists of two 18x18 cradled wood panels (2 inches deep). A joyful diptych ready for almost any room.
I often begin my abstract paintings with very random, unplanned, loose, bold marks using paints, crayons, pencils and charcoal. As I live with these marks, the painting begins to lead the way for me. Sometimes the initial marks are covered over, but in BirdCat, I immediately saw the bird and the cat, and proceeded from there. Another playful look at life! This acrylic is on a cradled wood panel and is 12 x 12 x 2 inches deep.

The circle represents cycles-rain and sun, birth and death, yin and yang. The palette is predominantly blues and aqua with a pop of hot pink.

There is an innocence and maturity in his eyes, and a look that was hard to forget. I still have that Palmetto rose in my studio in Ashland and often wonder where he is and what he's doing.

My abstract art leads me in many directions, as you can see in this 24 x 24 x 2.5 cradled wood panel. This one began with a flurry of colors and marks on the first layer. As it developed, I was able to find the energy I was looking for, using whites, grays and textures that evolved in the negative spaces. Titled "Staccato", but this might have another title that speaks to you. Oil and cold wax.
