by Andy Julo, As an artist, This cyanotype is known as a photogram as it is one of a kind. First introduced in 1842, the cyanotype process is among the earliest photographic techniques to be developed in the modern era. The cyanotype was used well into the 20th century within the fields of engineering and construction to reproduce architectural drawings more commonly referred to as blueprints. Created using a mixture of ammonium iron citrate and potassium ferricyanide, the cyanotypes’ image appears after the light sensitive paper (or other substrate) is exposed to ultraviolet light and developed in water. The image records a ribbon â€" a decorative embellishment I am positing as something queer. Ribbons â€~complete’ gifts. They’re intended to shine, honor, and celebrate; a material that begins as something unfinished but through trial and effort, symbolizes both success and surprise. So much of queer experience is bound up with the enterprise of coming together and coming apart., 33"x22"
