"The most compelling gift of glass to the language of objects, I feel, is the voice that speaks of the outside and the inside at once, together." Mark Peiser

It is fitting that the work of art chosen for the Asheville Art Museum's Gala 2022 raffle is one by artist Mark Peiser. A founder of the studio glass movement in America and a longtime resident of Western North Carolina, his work in glass is unparalleled. The Asheville Art Museum was delighted to curate and present a stunning retrospective of Mark's work from 2003 to 2004. The Museum is committed to exploring Mark's work in-depth, and holds, due to many generous donors, an outstanding collection of his work from all of his series, 1965 to present.

Proceeds from this raffle will go to supporting Museum exhibitions and programs, such as internships and fellowships for students in high school through graduate school.

More about the artist:

"This artist is critical to the development of American studio glass and to the story of American art of the 20th and 21st centuries." Pamela Myers, Director, Asheville Art Museum, 2022

"In his years as a glass artist, Peiser, the master of lyricism in glass, has imbued his chosen art form with a degree of humanity, modesty, humor, and, above all, outstanding talent that has assured him a significant place among glass Olympians. His landscapes in glass whether literal, imagined, realistic, surreal, introspective or abstract are quite simply unmatched." Dan Klein 2003, London, England

"For myself and many other glass artists, Mark has always represented a sense of integrity about both the design of the piece and the material from which he makes it. He has integrated the process of creating the piece with the process of creating the means to do it, combining technical ingenuity with aesthetic innovation. He has always made artwork of quality and character. In doing so he has influenced several generations of glass artists." Rob Levin, glass artist, Burnsville, NC

"Mark Peiser, an internationally known glass artist and innovator, is recognized for his uniquely individualized approaches and accomplishments. His continual investigation of the expressive implications of glass properties and processes have led to highly collected distinctive bodies of work: Opaque Image Vessels, Paperweight Vases, Innerspace Series, Forms of Consciousness, Cold Stream Cast Vessels, Palomar, Passages and Etudes Tableau series. Peiser is a founder of the Glass Art Society, of which he is now an honorary member, and a leading presence in the Studio Glass Movement. He has exhibited worldwide and is in many public and private collections including the Asheville Art Museum." (Bender Gallery website)
