Night Watch by Howard Russell Butler (1856-1934) oil on canvas, 29.5 x 24.25 inches, 36 x 30.75 inches framed. Howard Russell Butler was born in NYC and began to study art at the early age of fourteen in Yonkers, NY. In 1876, he graduated from Princeton University with a degree in Science and in 1881 with a law degree from Columbia University. In 1884, Butler decided to concentrate entirely on painting and studied with J. Carroll Beckwith and George de Forest Brush at the Art Students League in New York before traveling to Paris where he was a member of the artistic American colony. In 1889, he raised the capital to build the Fine Arts building at 215 West 57th Street in NYC which became the home of the Art Students League, the Society of American Artists, the Architectural League of New York, and the newly formed American Fine Arts Society which he led for seventeen years. Butler is known particularly for painting seascapes and solar eclipses. His works can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Art Museum, American Museum of Natural History and many other private and public collections throughout the United States and abroad.

Trish Karter began her art journey at Wheaton College at the age of 16 as a studio major but left studio to pursue academics and received a BA in Art History and Ancient Greek and later an MPPM from the Yale School of Management. At 30, she decided to return to drawing and studied for almost 10 years, on and off with Frank Mason of the Art Students League in New York and in 1992 was named a Copley artist.

The winning bidder will receive an on-site plein air commission of any location between Mystic and New Haven, CT. Trish will work with the winner to determine the specific location and find out why that place is special and what their hopes are about the piece. She will then capture that in an oil painting specific to the winning bidders desire. The final size will be dependent on the site but will be either 9 x 12, 12 x 18, or 12 x 24 inches. Travel and all materials are included. Does not include frame. Must be completed before December 15, 2022.

The winning bidder will receive a $2,000 gift card to the Sanderling Resort located in Duck, NC, where they can design and book their own personal getaway package for 2-4 people.

Once settled into the resort, the winners will be picked up from the resort and travel to the Martins' ocean front home along the beach by four wheel drive. Arriving at Blue Rhapsody they will enjoy a special lunch of Marie's famous crab cakes, followed by a personal tour along the ocean where you can look for colonial wild mustangs and visit the all natural False Cape State Park in Virginia (which borders North Carolina).
