Swan and Vase by Lilywork ceramic, 19 x 22 inches, 2019. The story of Lilywork, created by Paul and Esther Halferty, begins at Moravian Pottery and TIle Work, a living history museum in Bucks County, PA. In the fall of 2005, Esther began an apprenticeship at TIle Works and came to learn traditional tile-making techniques and creating her own works inspired by her love of printmaking, architecture and patterns seen on her travels. Paul, was working at Tile Works as a mold-maker and ceramist. One year later they were married and Lilywork Artisan TIle was born. They now press and design every tile by hand and every piece they make is one of a kind.
Starstruck, 2022 by David D.J. Rau mixed-media assemblage on antique slate, 14 x 11 x 3 inches. This out-of-this world assemblage is built on an antique roofing tile (ca. 1795) from New Orleans. Originally mined in Pennsylvania, it traveled via raft on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. A starstruck family of ex-votos, or religious votive objects, is gathered under a full moon (a weathered ball found during one of the artists' long walks between Chester and Deep River). Decorative metallic coins, pins, and glass beads float in the spacey void. The "8" in the lower corner is a signifier of the maker who was born on 8/8. Artwork comes with a black metal stand for easy display.
