In 2022, an estimated 15,590 new cancer cases will be diagnosed among children aged 0 to 14 in the United States. Childhood cancer incidence rates have slowly decreased by 0.6% per year since 1975. An estimated 1,780 cancer deaths will occur among children in 2022. Cancer is the second-leading cause of death among children. 1 in 285 children will be diagnosed with cancer before age 20.
Sept 10th will be the fifth year for the American Cancer Society Construction Vs Cancer "The Big Dig" event in Utah. "Big Dig Kits" for families who register will be available for pick-up or delivery by August 25th. Kits will include a build kit project, hard hat, and more! Families will then be encouraged to send in pictures of their progress and then ultimately the final product that they build for prizes at the end! The in-person event will start at 10 AM with the first hour for pediatric survivors and their families only. The event will open to the public at 11 AM and conclude at 2 PM.
Funds raised before and during the event will directly go to support pediatric cancer research. The American Cancer Society is currently funding over $800,000 in pediatric multiyear research grants at the University of Utah and Primary Children's Hospital and more than $37 million in grants across the United States. The 2021 Construction VS Cancer event raised over $77,000 for pediatric cancer research.
